AIA HENRY ADAMS MEDALISTS For more than a century, the AIA has provided a medal of excellence to the top graduating students in National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) or Canadian Architectural Certification Board ( CACB) accredited degrees, Bachelor of Architecture, Master of Architecture, or Doctor or Architecture. The award is named in honor of Henry Adams (1838-1918), a historian, author, and scholar who donated his book, Mont-Saint-Michel and Chartres, and eventually the royalties from his book, to the AIA. In 2018, a new medal and process was announced that aligns with the original 1914 resolution that established this award. Formerly called “The School Medal,” the AIA Henry Adams Medal and Certificate program began in 1914, and was awarded for “general excellence in architecture throughout the fouryear course to graduating students of architecture schools recognized by the Institute.” The graduate was later presented with a copy of Mont St. Michel and Chartres, written by Henry Adams. The copyright of this book was later bequeathed to the Institute by the author. The Henry Adams Fund was established in 1921 with royalties from the book sales. The fund was used to award a copy of the book “to draftsmen who cannot afford to buy it.” The School Medal and Henry Adams book awards evolved into the Henry Adams Medal and Certificate Program.

It is awarded on the basis of topic relevance and potential significance, quality of research and analysis, design execution, documentation and presentation. The award is given in honor of Victor J Papanek, who was the J.L. Constant Professor of Architecture and Design at The University of Kansas from 1981 to 1998. Papanek was a designer, educator, author and philosopher ahead of his time. He advocated for the socially and ecologically responsible design of products, tools, and community infrastructures. He was untiring and eloquent in urging for design approaches that would be sensitive to social and ecological considerations. He wrote that “In an age of mass production when everything must be planned and designed, design has become the most powerful tool with which (humans) shape their tools and environments (and, by extension, society and themselves). This demands high social and moral responsibility from the designer”. Papanek’s seminal book, “Design for the Real World: Human Ecology and Social Change” remains as relevant and influential today as ever.
