CLINICAL SERVICES & OUTREACH The department provides inpatient and procedural services at Albert B. Chandler Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital, Lexington Surgery Center, Markey Cancer Center, and the Gill Heart and Vascular Institute. We have more than a dozen ambulatory clinics, located across UK HealthCare’s Kentucky Clinic, Good Samaritan Professional Arts Center building, and Turfland locations. Additionally, our Bluegrass Care Clinic, associated with the division of infectious diseases, recently relocated to the Beaumont area of the Lexington community. In fiscal year 2020, the department had 13,184 discharges, performed 26,561 procedures, and completed 144,895 outpatient visits. Our care team also completed more than 46,000 telehealth visits in the months of March 2020 through March 2021, largely due to COVID-19. Nearly every division within the department undertakes local and regional outreach efforts to provide the highest quality of care to our patients in their own communities. Notably, our divisions of hematology and blood and marrow transplant and medical oncology provide key services as a part of UK HealthCare’s Markey Cancer Center Affiliate Network, which includes 20 network hospitals and locations across the state of Kentucky. Additionally, our division of cardiovascular medicine leads the Gill Heart and Vascular Institute Affiliate Network, which includes 17 outreach clinics and affiliate partners across the Commonwealth. Overall, across the entire department, we have more than 50 active outreach clinics as a part of our ongoing clinical activities across the Commonwealth.

UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY COLLEGE OF MEDICINE Founded in 1960, the College of Medicine, produces highly qualified, caring physicians and biomedical scientists to serve the people of Kentucky and the nation. In 2020, the college tallied 639 medical students across all campuses, along with 875 residents and fellows, and 390 graduate and postdoctoral students. It is one of six health-related colleges at the University – Dentistry, Health Sciences, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Public Health – and encompasses a combined 25 basic science and clinical departments with more than 1,200 faculty members. In the past two years, the college has expanded its educational and research efforts, adding two new regional campuses in Bowling Green and Northern Kentucky with educational opportunities that complement those offered at the main campus in Lexington. The college also has a site in Morehead, a component of its effort to address the Commonwealth’s physician shortage by offering third- and fourth-year medical students a curriculum that emphasizes rural medicine. 8
The College of Medicine prides itself on its heavy research focus. In fiscal year 2020, the college’s research funding totaled more than $200 million, with its National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding doubling since fiscal year 2017. This has allowed, and will continue to allow, UK researchers to dedicate more time and resources to alleviate the health issues Kentuckians face. In addition to excellent education, high-quality clinical care, and groundbreaking research, one of the crucial focuses in the UK College of Medicine’s strategic plan is to foster an environment that maintains inclusive excellence through recruitment, hiring, retention, and promotion of diverse faculty, staff, and learners. Under the leadership of our associate dean for diversity and inclusion, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion has laid the foundation for a more encompassing and welcoming environment.
