WHERE CURIOSITY NEVER RETIRES

HISTORY AND GOVERNMENT

Great Decisions

Instructor: Ted Oldham Dates and Time: Thursdays, March 7 – April 25, 10 a.m. – noon Location: Lexington Theological Seminary – Third Floor Maximum Enrollment: 20 | Course Fee: $25

The Bill of Rights as Interpreted by Our Supreme Court

Instructor: Dave Emerson Dates and Time: Thursdays, February 7 – March 21, 1 – 3 p.m. Location: Hunter Presbyterian Church – Fellowship Hall Maximum Enrollment: 30 | Course Fee: $25

The Foreign Policy Association’s Great Decisions grassroots initiative began in 1954 and has grown to tens of thousands participating each year. The program provides information and a format for groups to discuss the “most critical global issues facing America today.” Members learn together as they exercise critical thinking skills and share their personal understandings of issues that are sometimes complex and controversial. Typical class format includes a short video followed by class discussion. Topics for the spring include: Refugees and Global Migration; The Middle East: Regional Disorder; Nuclear Negotiations: Back to the Future; The Rise of Populism in Europe; Decoding U.S.-China Trade; Cyber Conflicts and Geopolitics; The United States and Mexico: Partnership Tested; and State of the State Department and Diplomacy.

During this course, we will discuss the development of the law surrounding the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution. As the Kentucky Constitution has a number of parallel provisions, we will compare and contrast these with the federal provisions. While most of these amendments raise significant “political issues,” the presentations will be about how the courts have dealt with issues. We will discuss the competing views, with each student being free to share their thoughts, but the sessions will not become a debate or attempt to persuade.

Early America and the Coming of the Europeans

Instructor: Susan Bottom Dates and Time: Wednesdays, February 6 – March 27, 10 a.m. – noon Location: McConnell Springs Park Maximum Enrollment: 62 | Course Fee: $25

Key Concepts in Modern Politics

Instructor: Jeff Freyman Dates and Time: Mondays, February 4 – March 11, 2 – 4 p.m. Location: Lexington Theological Seminary – Third Floor Maximum Enrollment: 20 | Course Fee: $25

Colonial America began as widely separate settlements of European immigrants. The newcomers brought dreams of land, riches and religious and political freedom – for themselves not everybody. The early settlements were diverse in their ethnicity, their goals and their government. Those early years feature amazing events and people: the country’s first gold rush, Indian Wars, religious upheavals, witch trials and a growing slave population. Some immigrants failed and fled back to Europe. Others stayed to create the original Thirteen Colonies.

Liberty, Democracy, Rights, Equality, Community. Everyone talks about these concepts, but what do they really mean? Using The Great Courses series of videos titled “The Modern Political Tradition: Hobbes to Habermas”, we will discuss the key ideas of modern political thinkers such as Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau and Montesquieu who gave birth to American democracy.

The Mexican-American War

The First Americans: From Ice Age Nomads to Empire Builders

Instructor: Phil Maxson Dates and Time: Mondays, March 4 – April 1, 2 – 3:30 p.m. Location: Crestwood Christian Church – Mission Center 4 Maximum Enrollment: 30 | Course Fee: $25

Instructor: Penny Lamb Dates and Time: Thursdays, March 14 – May 2, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. Location: Lexington Theological Seminary – Third Floor Maximum Enrollment: 28 | Course Fee: $25

In this course, students will learn about the Mexican-American War that was so important to our country at the time and still affects us to this day. The war brought vast territories to the United States and acted as a precursor to the Civil War. During the course, we will pay particular attention to Kentuckians who were involved in the war as soldiers and/or politicians.

In this course, we will explore the various theories of the first humans in the Americas including when and how they got here and where they came from. We will trace those earliest inhabitants as they populated the continent and developed sophisticated societies and cultures. We will examine some of the groups, such as the mound builders of the Mississippian Culture, the Ancient Pueblo Peoples of the Southwest and the Adena and Hopewell people, who flourished long before the arrival of the first Europeans.

There are many misconceptions about what a forensic scientist actually does, due in large part to television shows, which often portray crime scene, police and forensic science investigations as nearly the same thing. This class will begin with an overview of the various areas of a forensic lab and some of the main issues and challenges facing forensic labs now. Students will then discuss the work done in the four areas of the lab where the great majority of activity is: DNA, toxicology, controlled substances and pattern evidence (such as fingerprints). Participants will examine sample results from each of these four areas and make their own conclusions. No lab work will be performed. No science background needed.
