The fraternity and sorority community affords members the opportunity to become involved both on and off campus through philanthropy, academics and leadership development – all while building intentional relationships. Regardless of the distance between your home and Lexington, your chosen organization will become your home away from home, just as your newfound brothers or sisters will become like family to you. Fraternity men and sorority women have been part of a long-standing tradition at the University of Kentucky since the first fraternity was established in 1893. FRATERNITY AND SORORITY LIFE UK Fraternity and Sorority Life includes professional fraternity and sorority advisors dedicated to working with fraternal organizations and providing support to those interested in joining. Fraternity and Sorority Life is a part of the Dean of Students Office and works collaboratively with other units in the Office for Student Success to create a positive social culture that supports and promotes academic success and wellbeing for all members of the fraternity and sorority life community. Each member of the staff supports the governing councils and chapters in all areas of fraternity and sorority operations. Those include membership education, leadership, community service, university involvement, finance, recruitment, scholarship, personal growth and accountability. The team works collaboratively with council officers, chapter officers and members, as well as chapter advisors, alumni corporations and inter/ national organization volunteers and staff. FSL FEE Many of the resources provided to individual members of the fraternity and sorority community are made possible through the FSL Fee. This fee is assessed similarly to other student fees, such as lab fees, through the student’s online tuition bill each semester. The FSL Fee, which shows up as “Greek Fee,” is first assessed the semester in which a student joins and continues each semester of their membership. The FSL Fee assessed to individual members of the Panhellenic Council and Interfraternity Council is $65, and the FSL Fee assessed to individual members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council and United Greek Council is $30. 5

MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS SCHOLARSHIP
UK’s fraternity and sorority community takes immense pride in their scholastic achievement. Both the new member and the undergraduate FSL grade point averages regularly exceed the undergraduate average at UK. The Fall 2021 all-FSL undergraduate semester GPA was 3.24 compared to the undergraduate all-university semester GPA of 3.06. The difference was even greater for new members who achieved a GPA of 3.208 compared to the all-first year-student average of 3.100. Chapters place great emphasis on encouraging, developing and maintaining academic progress. All groups have minimum standards for membership that serve to encourage and hold members accountable for academic success. Councils and chapters provide tutors, study programs and other incentives to promote academic excellence. Additionally, time management skills of fraternity and sorority members improve as they work to achieve their academic goals, while also meeting chapter involvement expectations.
LEADERSHIP
Membership in a fraternity or sorority offers you opportunities to develop your leadership potential, both within the chapters and on campus. From day one, members can enhance their leadership skills through involvement with committees, event planning and personal and professional development programs. Chapters take great pride in serving in leadership positions in a variety of campus groups, including the Student Government Association, NAACP, DanceBlue, Club Sports, Student Wellness Ambassadors, K Crew, College Mentors for Kids, the Underground Perspective, Student Activities Board, Residence Life Association, Latino Student Union and many others.
While many chapters focus on national philanthropies, all support local agencies, as well. Each of the councils promotes collective service and philanthropy among its member chapters. For example, the Panhellenic Council is raising money to help Circle of Sisterhood build a school, while the United Greek Council hosts a day of service each year. There is no denying that service is a foundational component of the fraternity and sorority experience.
SOCIAL
UK’s fraternity and sorority community provides a diverse selection of social opportunities for members, varying from brotherhood and sisterhood events to social functions between organizations. Friendship is a core value of fraternities and sororities, and groups work to provide events and activities that promote relationships within the chapter and in the entire fraternity and sorority community. Fraternity and sorority members are proud members of the Big Blue Nation and fill the stands to cheer on the Cats. Chapter members actively participate and serve on planning committees for student-life events like Labor Stay, Crunch Brunch and campus-sponsored concerts. These social opportunities help members form bonds and develop relationships that last far beyond their collegiate years.
SERVICE
The University of Kentucky was founded on the principle of service, and chapters support a strong tradition of service to our campus, the local and global community. Each year, members donate thousands of dollars and, more importantly, thousands of volunteer hours to various charities. 7
REQUIREMENTS These are general requirements. Chapterspecific requirements are listed in council publications.
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS Individuals interested in participating in recruitment or intake must be full-time undergraduate students at the University of Kentucky. Each chapter requires a minimum grade point average for joining. The Interfraternity Council is the only council with a minimum academic requirement for participation in recruitment.
FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS
Joining a fraternity or sorority carries a financial commitment. This financial commitment covers the cost of participation in chapter activities, dues and fees to the inter/national organization and housing costs for groups with chapter facilities. The amount varies by chapter, and each organization will have different options for payment, including payment plans. New members can expect to pay more for the first semester of membership because

of national initiation fees and other one-time costs. All members of the FSL community are assessed the FSL Fee each semester, which is $65 for IFC and Panhellenic members and $30 for NPHC and UGC members.
SERVICE REQUIREMENTS
Being a member of a fraternity or sorority involves giving back to the local community as well as to each chapter’s national philanthropy. Every chapter has its own service requirements for individual members that may range from completing individual service hours to attending chapter philanthropic events. Participating in these service events provides members with opportunities to get involved in the community and learn the importance of giving back to others.
HOUSING REQUIREMENT
There are currently 27 Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council chapters that have chapter facilities. Living in a fraternity or sorority house is a great transition from living in a
residence hall because it has many of the same benefits, plus the opportunity to live with fraternity brothers or sorority sisters. Chapter house living usually includes sharing a room with at least one chapter member and having meals served Monday through Friday. Residents also have the convenience of living in the hub of many chapter activities. If a chapter has housing, members are likely to be required to live in the house for at least two semesters. Most fraternity or sorority housing corporations operate much like a landlord and must have all available spots occupied with a signed contract—and possibly a deposit. Most chapters have a house director who lives in an apartment within the house to provide security, as well as supervision of meal plans, maintenance and housekeeping. All chapter housing is different, so this is a great topic to discuss with each organization.
POLICIES HAZING STATEMENT
Fraternities and sororities were founded by students who came together to create a bond and support each other academically. Their goals were intellectual, social and moral growth. Fraternities and sororities at the University of Kentucky expect their members to strive for academic achievement, demonstrate responsible citizenship, show concern for the rights and needs of others and provide leadership by promoting respect for others. As such, hazing in any form will not be tolerated. All secondyear members are required to participate in hazing prevention education and new members are provided with information during FSL 101 in the semester they join.
The University of Kentucky defines hazing as any action or situation created by a member of the university community against another member of the university community for the purpose of affiliation with a group or organization that: (a) is negligent or reckless in nature; (b) is humiliating or endangers an individual; or (c) unreasonably interferes with scholastic or employment activities. If you feel you are being hazed or know of a hazing incident, report it immediately online at go.uky.edu/ReportHazingUK or call the Hazing Hotline at 859-257-8573.
ALCOHOL STATEMENT
The University of Kentucky fraternity and sorority community opposes the misuse of alcohol and maintains that all chapters, all individual members and all guests must abide by state, local and university laws and regulations. Guidelines for social events involving alcohol are established by the University of Kentucky and prohibit students from possessing alcoholic beverages in the houses and on chapter premises. All chapters work to educate and foster a better understanding of social responsibility and alcohol education for their members.

The United Greek Council at the University of Kentucky is the governing council for special-interest and culturally based fraternities and sororities and is the fastest growing council at the University of Kentucky. The focus of UGC is to support a diverse community by creating a culture of respect, inclusivity and empowerment for its organizations.

HOW TO JOIN Fraternities and sororities within the United Greek Council individually coordinate their recruitment and intake opportunities by chapter. To provide a centralized location to learn about each organization within UGC, the council hosts its annual Uni-Tie Dye event during K Week. Traditionally, Beta Upsilon Chi - Brothers Under Christ Fraternity, Kappa Beta Gamma Sorority and Sigma Phi Lambda Christian Sorority host week-long recruitment periods each semester, including different events that allow potential new members to meet and get to know the active members of the group. Delta Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc., Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc., and Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc., conduct membership intake at various times of the year, based upon the needs of the chapter. Another way to join the UGC community is by starting an interest group! An interest group is a group of people who come together to create a new fraternity or sorority experience that is not already being offered at the University of Kentucky. While all interest groups within UGC will eventually affiliate with a national special-interest or culturally-based fraternity or sorority founded on one specific interest or culture, all our UGC chapters celebrate a diverse membership! NATIONAL PAN-HELLENIC COUNCIL “The purpose of the National Pan-Hellenic Council is to initiate, discuss, coordinate, oversee and maintain programs and activities of mutual interest.”
The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is the coordinating body of the historically Black fraternities and sororities at the University of Kentucky. NPHC organizations were established during a time when African Americans were denied the rights of equal opportunity in society, including at colleges and universities. Today, these organizations continue to embrace the ideals of unity, achievement and service to the community. The chapters strive to empower their members and the larger community socially, economically and politically through education and positive, intentional relationships. The opportunity to experience such a genuinely rich tradition and history, while adopting an excellent legacy, makes NPHC organizations a great fit for prospective members. We have had chartered chapters of all nine NPHC organizations and currently have seven active chapters.
HOW TO JOIN NPHC organizations take new members into their organizations through a process called membership intake. This process is organized by each chapter individually and includes selection of candidates, education about the organization and initiation and full membership. Some will host membership intake every semester, while others take new members every year or every two years. Chapters work with their inter/national organizations to schedule membership intake when it best suits their membership needs. Students interested in joining any of the NPHC organizations are required to attend NPHC 101, an educational program organized by the council each semester to provide interested students with more information about each chapter, as well as membership intake and expectations. @uk_nphc 14

The Interfraternity Council is the governing body for a substantial portion of the men’s fraternities at the University of Kentucky. IFC works with member chapters to coordinate programs and activities that benefit the members, as well as advocates for the needs of fraternities at the University of Kentucky. Joining an IFC organization is a terrific way to get involved on campus and continue pursuing high academic performance and service to the community.
HOW TO JOIN Students interested in joining an IFC fraternity must be a full-time enrolled student at the University of Kentucky, as well as meet the academic requirement of either a 2.7 high school GPA (on a 4.0 unweighted scale) for new students, or a 2.5 college GPA for returning and transfer students. IFC primary recruitment kicks off with the annual Main Lawn Mingle event at K Week. From there, students will attend an information session called IFC 101 about all participating chapters, as well as open and invite-only chapter hosted events. Signing Day is the last day of primary recruitment and is when new members are officially invited to join. The Panhellenic Council is the governing body for the 14 National Panhellenic Conference sororities and one associate member sorority at the University of Kentucky. Panhellenic’s main goals are to create community-wide standards and relationships through leadership opportunities, educational and social programming, as well as oversee fall primary recruitment. Panhellenic events include a Women’s Leadership Conference, wellness programming and Month of the Scholar. As the largest women’s organization and the second largest student organization, Panhellenic makes a significant impact on UK’s campus with its support for philanthropy, scholarship, leadership and sisterhood.

HOW TO JOIN Panhellenic hosts primary recruitment in the fall semester. This is the best opportunity to join because interested women will visit each of the 14 chapters during recruitment. Phi Sigma Rho is an associate member and does not participate in primary recruitment.
PRIMARY RECRUITMENT
The University of Kentucky uses a fully structured recruitment process to build relationships between chapter members and potential new members. Women participating in primary recruitment will have the opportunity to meet all the chapters and learn about different components of membership through each round of the process. Primary recruitment is a valuesbased, mutually selective process designed to allow both chapters and potential new members to make choices about their best fit based on shared values. Women interested in participating in primary recruitment should register at www.uksorority.com between Sunday, May 1, and Wednesday, August 24.
RECRUITMENT DATES
Primary recruitment in 2022 will be hosted the first two weekends of the academic year. A mandatory orientation session for women participating will be held during the first week of classes, depending upon their recruitment group. Open House Rounds will be held Saturday, August 27, and Sunday, August 28. The following weekend will include Philanthropy Round on Friday, September 2, and Saturday, September 3; Sisterhood Round on Sunday, September 4; and Preference Round on Monday, September 5. Bid Day will be held on the evening of Tuesday, September 6.
REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Primary recruitment participants must be full-time enrolled undergraduate UK students for the Fall 2022 semester. Register for primary recruitment online at www.uksorority.com and click the “Recruitment” tab. The registration fee for primary recruitment is $150.
CONTINUOUS OPEN BIDDING
Continuous Open Bidding (COB) begins after the conclusion of primary recruitment and continues throughout the academic year. COB is recommended for anyone who chooses not to participate in primary recruitment or does not match with a chapter at the end of the process. Participating sororities will contact women directly to invite them to attend their membership activities or will post information about their COB events on their chapter and Panhellenic’s social media. Keep in mind, women will not hear from all Panhellenic sororities, because some chapters will not have available spaces after primary recruitment.

FREQUENTLY USED TERMS ADVISOR: An alumnus member who serves as a resource for the active chapter and liaison between the alumni and collegians. ALUMNI: Members of a fraternity who have graduated. (Singular is alumnus.) ALUMNAE: Members of a sorority who have graduated. (Singular is alumna.) BADGE: Also known as a pin, it is an item of jewelry given to members upon initiation. BID: An official invitation to join a Panhellenic or IFC organization given to potential new members. BID DAY: The last day of IFC and Panhellenic recruitment where potential new members receive formal invitations to join a fraternity or sorority. CALL: A yell used most commonly by NPHC and culturally-based chapters. Used to identify and greet brothers and sisters. Non-members are not permitted to use the call. CHAPTER: A branch of a national sorority or fraternity established at a campus. Each will have its own name, usually designated by Greek letters. CHARTERING: When an establishing chapter receives official recognition from its national office to have a chapter at a campus. COLLEGIAN/COLLEGIATE: An initiated member of a fraternity or sorority currently in college. Formerly known as active. CULTURALLY BASED: Fraternities and sororities that include the celebration or appreciation of a particular culture. Examples include African American and Latino organizations. ESTABLISHING CHAPTER: A new organization that is awaiting official recognition from its national office to have a chapter at a campus.

EXPANSION/EXTENSION: The process used by inter/national organizations to establish a new chapter of their organization at a university. IFC: The Interfraternity Council is the governing body for some of the men’s fraternities at UK. INITIATE: A person who has recently learned the ritual of a fraternity or sorority and is a full member. INITIATION: A ceremony where a new member becomes a full member of the organization. Initiation ceremonies are private and different for all organizations. INTAKE: Term for the process by which NPHC and other culturally-based organizations select candidates to become new members. LEGACY: The grandchild, son, daughter, brother or sister of an initiated or alumnus/alumna member. Some organizations also include nieces, nephews or stepchildren as legacies. LINE: New member class of an NPHC or culturally-based organization. NEOPHYTE: New member of an NPHC or culturally-based organization. Also called a neo. NEW MEMBER: Term for a person who recently accepted a bid or invitation to membership. Some organizations refer to new members as associate members or neophytes. NEW MEMBER CLASS: A group of new members who join at the same time. Also referred to as a pledge class or line. NEW MEMBER PRESENTATION: Presentation show for new members of NPHC or culturally-based organizations. Also called a probate. NIC: The North American Interfraternity Conference is the
national governing body of the majority of men’s fraternities. UK’s IFC is affiliated with the NIC. NPC: The National Panhellenic Conference is the organization that governs 26 national women’s sororities. UK’s Panhellenic Council is affiliated with the NPC. NPHC: The National Pan-Hellenic Council, the coordinating body of the nine historically African American fraternities and sororities, also known as the Divine Nine. UK’s NPHC is affiliated with the NPHC headquarters. ORDER OF OMEGA: An honor society for fraternity and sorority members who demonstrate outstanding leadership and academic achievement. PANHELLENIC COUNCIL: The governing body for the 14 NPC sororities and one associate member organization at UK. PHILANTHROPY: Service project or charity undertaken by chapters or councils on a campus, community or national level. PNM: A Potential New Member is a student interested in joining an organization. Also called an aspirant by some groups. RECRUITMENT: The process where sororities and fraternities get new members. Potential new members can interact with all participating organizations and learn more about fraternity/sorority life. SPECIAL-INTEREST: Fraternities and sororities that focus on a specific common area of interest such as culture, faith or academic major. UGC: The United Greek Council is the governing body for the culturally-based and special-interest fraternities and sororities at UK.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Will joining a fraternity or sorority have a negative effect on my grades?
It’s more likely that membership in a fraternity or sorority will help improve your grades. The Fall 2021 undergraduate all-FSL semester GPA was 3.24 compared to the allUniversity semester GPA of 3.06. Why the difference? When students join a fraternity/sorority they become part of a larger group of students who have already made it through their first year at UK. Not only does this group understand what a first-year student is facing, but it can also provide guidance and support during the transition to the University of Kentucky by organizing study groups and connecting students with campus resources. Ultimately, succeeding in the classroom is the student’s individual responsibility. With the broad range of resources available within the fraternity and sorority community, students are more likely to achieve their full academic potential.
Is hazing a traditional practice in fraternities and sororities?
The University of Kentucky has a clear policy that hazing is prohibited on campus. This is not limited to fraternities and sororities but for any student, faculty, staff or visitor. Chapter members are educated on the dangers of such practices on an ongoing basis by both the University and the national/ international organization. Hazing, or any activity that subjects members to harassment, ridicule, intimidation, physical exhaustion or mental distress, is entirely contrary to the purposes of the fraternity and sorority community and the University of Kentucky and is not tolerated. Additionally, hazing has been renounced by all inter/ national organizations and their governing bodies. If anyone ever thinks that they are being asked to participate in inappropriate activities, whether in a fraternity or sorority or any other student organization, the student should contact the Office of Student Conduct immediately.
Are fraternities/sororities primarily social in nature, like in the movies?
That depends on your definition of “social.” The various activities of today’s fraternities and sororities include educational programs, community service events, intramural sports, alumni events, Parents’ Days, Homecoming, formals and date parties. While all these events are “social” in some ways, there are additional benefits to participation. All fraternity and sorority chapter houses are alcohol-free facilities with exceptions only for registered alumni events. Additionally, all chapters are required to follow and stay up to date on all University guidelines related to COVID-19 safety. Fraternity and Sorority Life is committed to working with the University to encourage all students to protect, respect and do their part.
Do I have to identify as a student of color to join a culturally based fraternity or sorority?
No. Chapters within the National Pan-Hellenic Council, as well as the culturally-based organizations in the United Greek Council, are open to students of all ethnic, racial and cultural backgrounds. These organizations were founded by students who identify with a particular cultural background for the purpose of providing students of color with an opportunity to find support systems and encouragement in higher education. Membership in these organizations is now open to students of any background, but the groups still include an inter/national focus on initiatives that benefit their cultural background.
How much time is required to be a member?
Participating in any worthwhile activity always requires a time investment. The old saying “you get out of it what you’re willing to put into it” could not be truer. Most of the fraternity men and sorority women are successfully balancing academics, a part-time job and a social life alongside chapter membership. While there are mandatory commitments that are set well in advance (weekly meetings, community service projects, new member education), a student can be as involved as they choose to be. Time requirements vary from group to group depending upon how ambitious a chapter’s programming calendar might be. The students who are most active and involved are usually the ones most satisfied with their decision to join a fraternity or sorority.
Which chapter is the best one?
All fraternities and sororities share the values of scholarship, leadership, service and brotherhood/sisterhood. The University of Kentucky fraternity and sorority community is very strong, and all of the chapters fulfill their duties to achieve excellence in these areas. Each chapter has its own identity, and students will know which chapter is the best fit for them in both values and personality.
What role do families play in the fraternity and sorority community?
Families play a key role in the fraternity and sorority community by being supportive and engaged in their student’s experience. No matter if they were never in a fraternity or sorority or still volunteer regularly with their organization, there are ways for family members to be involved and helpful. The Fraternity and Sorority Life Office encourages families to keep an open mind and encourage their students to do the same, as the membership experience is different for every member. Chapters frequently have events for families, regularly distribute newsletters and some even have parent and family clubs designed to support the chapter. If family members ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Fraternity and Sorority Life Office. 35
