A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE

UK LAW:

Located on UK’s main campus in Lexington, UK Law is large enough for a diverse curriculum, yet small enough to foster relationships and community. Founded in 1908, UK Law has been approved by the American Bar Association (ABA) since 1925 and was elected to the Order of the Coif, the most prestigious national legal honorary society, in 1931.

Second-Year (2L) and Third-Year (3L) Curriculum As a 2L and 3L the only required curriculum is Professional Responsibility, a professional skills course, and a seminar with a substantial writing requirement. UK Law’s faculty encourages students in their second and third year to not only take courses in the area they expect to practice, but also to gain basic legal literacy and an understanding of the depth and complexity of the law as a whole. For course descriptions, please visit www.law.uky.edu/admissions/coursecatalog. 11

or better. The program is designed to be completed in six successive semesters of academic residence or, under an accelerated program, in five semesters and two eight-week summer sessions, allowing graduation in December of the third year. Full-time is no less than 10 hours, but students normally enroll in 14-16 credit hours per semester.

ADVICE FROM CURRENT STUDENTS “Take time for yourself.” “Start outlining early!” “Be sure to ask questions during class.” “Start on assignments early, as soon as you get them when the information is still fresh.” “Work together with your classmates. You will get things done faster and more accurately.”

Two of UK Law’s major strengths are the outstanding quality of the faculty and their dedication to excellent teaching. UK Law has strong traditions of open doors, faculty-student interaction, and faculty concern about students’ progress and success. The faculty teaching first-year courses are particularly interested in meeting with students outside of class to help them make a successful transition to law school. UK’s teaching faculty represents a variety of educational backgrounds. Their combined experience includes many years of work in major law firms, public interest programs, and clerking for state and federal judges before selecting teaching careers.
