UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY

College of Law Right now, you are joining thousands of law school-bound students across the world who are contemplating the next chapter of their lives. A legal education opens up many paths, including opportunities beyond the traditional practice of law. For this reason, I believe there is no better time to attend law school. But what makes this place – the University of Kentucky College of Law – different? A student-centered institution with world-class, accessible faculty and a location in the heart of the Bluegrass, UK Law is a very special place.

It’s all here, and it’s waiting for you.

MARY J. DAVIS Interim Dean and Ashland-Spears Distinguished Research Professor of Law

The College of Law, founded in 1908 from a law program initiated at Transylvania University in 1799, was one of the nation’s first state law schools. In 1913, the college established the nation’s first law school trial practice program, and its Kentucky Law Journal is the tenth-oldest student-run law review in the nation. UK Law has been approved by the American Bar Association since 1925 and was elected to Order of the Coif, the most prestigious national legal honorary society, in 1931. Proudly celebrating more than 100 years of service, UK Law is honored to have provided legal education to many of the nation’s outstanding lawyers, judges, political leaders and businesspeople.

Academic Enhancement PROGRAM

UK Law’s Academic Enhancement Program is built to ensure that you have tools for success every step of the way. All students are introduced to legal reasoning/research as part of orientation and attend workshops throughout the fall semester on topics such as time management, reading and briefing cases, outlining, and exam prep. Secondyear and third-year law students must complete a professional responsibility course, a professional skills course, and a seminar with a writing requirement. There are also opportunities for skills assessment tests, bar preparation options, and individual coaching. From individual and group support to expert advice and helpful study resources – at UK Law, you are never alone in your academic journey.

Clinical and Externship OPPORTUNITIES

UK Law’s Legal Clinic, directed by Professor and former Kentucky Public Advocate Allison Connelly (UK Law ’83), opened across the street from the college in 1997. Under the Kentucky Supreme Court’s limited practice rule, and with the supervision of Professor Connelly, third-year law students represent clients before state agencies and in state court proceedings. Students also interview clients, draft legal documents, file pleadings, and conduct discovery. The Clinic offers an exceptional introduction to the realities of legal practice and client representation, whether choosing to pursue a career in public interest law or private practice. The Clinic is three hours of graded credit. Beyond the Clinic, UK Law offers 15 externship opportunities that allow students to work under the guidance of practicing attorneys for academic credit. Each externship requires 100 hours of work during the semester for two pass/fail credits. No student may receive both pay and academic credit for the same work. However, if a student works more than 100 hours in an externship, in some cases they may be paid for the amount of work over 100 hours. Most of these externships are offered every semester including the summer session, if the externship supervisor is available and there is sufficient enrollment.

Take advantage of helpful services such as one-onone career counseling, seminars, workshops, career speakers, on-campus interviews, job postings and assistance with navigating online resources. Other graduates typically enter careers in public interest, business, government, academia, or decide to pursue further education. Many UK Law graduates begin practice in Kentucky, however others opt to pursue careers out-of-state. The Office of Career Development, in partnership with the UK Law Alumni Association, helps connect students wishing to practice elsewhere with practicing alumni.
