From The Dean The research level of our faculty combined with excellent teaching and service components have insured our maintenance of accreditation by AACSB International, NASPAA, ATMAE and ASBDC. Our UND brand is solid and getting even stronger. One of the more important developments during my tenure has been the focus on faculty and the development of multiple endowed chairs, professorships and fellowships. The accomplishments would not have been achieved without the tremendous support of alumni, friends, organizations and partners. The college Advisory Council in particular has provided not only for the students of today but also for students of the future. I will miss the daily action however, I hope to maintain the friendships and affiliations as the college moves forward under new leadership.
Seventeen years ago I began a remarkable journey as the Dean of the University of North Dakota’s College of Business and Public Administration. My original intent was to serve for five years and then return to the faculty. While the timeline of service was much longer than anticipated, now is a good time for a change for me and for the college. As announced in April of 2013 this is my last year as Dean. The Beginning In 1996, I had just retired from the US Army Reserve. My thought at the time was “Great, now I can be a better dad and husband, ride my motorcycle more and enjoy life a little differently.” Then the flood of 1997 hit and shortly after I was appointed as the 5th CoBPA Dean and the treadmill began. What a tremendous treadmill it has been! New Initiatives While it is hard to select any one specific initiative, I am particularly proud of our partnership with the University of Shanghai Science and Technology, the four alumni focused programs Olafson, Mellem, Hultberg and Morrison symposium series, reorganizing the advisory council, the Business and Government Symposium, the Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF), the Dakota Venture Group (DVG), our BPAC Student Council, the Sport Business minor, MS in Applied Economics, the Center of Innovation affiliation and the Entrepreneurship department just to name a few.

The Future During my next year of reassignment with Entrepreneurship, I will be doing fundraising and program development as the Dahl Endowed Chair in Leadership and Innovation. My plan is to retool and determine whether or not I want to return to the classroom and to my primary love – teaching. I look forward to spending more time with my children and grandchildren and maybe finally get to ride that motorcycle more often. My wife Dora Lea and my family has sacrificed much over these past 17 years in order to provide me the support, encouragement and time needed to fulfill the obligations of dean and to them I owe a debt of thanks I will never be able to repay. The CoBPA has a very bright future. Many exciting changes are in the works. My thanks are inadequate to express the gratitude I feel for the great alumni, staff, faculty and friends that have supported me. Thank you for the opportunity to serve.

Dean Dennis J. Elbert
LEADERSHIP(1997 - 2014)
Dean Dennis J. Elbert has provided a legacy of leadership while serving for 17 years as the Dean of the UND College of Business and Public Administration. “It will be my privilege to have served UND, as CoBPA Dean for 17 years at the conclusion of the 2013-2014 academic year,” Elbert said. “After that, I look forward to serving as the Eugene Dahl Endowed Chair of Innovation and Leadership to further build the entrepreneurship program, assist with continued development and work with faculty, staff and students to enhance the reputation of the department.” When speaking of Dean Elbert’s leadership Dr. Bob Boyd, Vice President Emeritus for Student and Outreach Services shared, “Denny served his students, college, UND, alumni, and his country with distinction and with little regard for himself – a true characteristic of a leader.”

LEADERSHIP LESSONS
Elbert’s leadership skills began long before his arrival at the University of North Dakota Campus. At UND Elbert pursued an undergraduate degree in business administration and was enrolled in the UND Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program. Elbert always knew he wanted to serve in the military and had a goal of becoming a commissioned officer. His role model growing up was his Dad, Norvin who was a WWII veteran.
MILITARY INFLUENCE
Elbert’s ROTC and business education connected on active duty when he became a training officer at Ft. Knox. While at Knox he received orders for Vietnam, shipping out in August 1969. While in Vietnam, Elbert was thinking about what his next steps would be after military service.
“I tell students I went to Vietnam at the age of 22 and came back a year later age 47, that is how Vietnam matured me,” said Elbert. With 34 men reporting to him, and in command of nine armor vehicles, Elbert found himself with more responsibility for people’s lives than he has ever had in his educational career. From Vietnam, Elbert wrote to former UND President, Thomas Clifford requesting acceptance to pursue a Master’s Degree in Marketing. While in Cambodia Elbert received a letter from Clifford indicating that he had been accepted as a special student. He credits Clifford with “saving my life in many ways” and refers to what he calls the Clifford Cambodian Chance as a great way to “pass it forward.” During his service as the 5th CoBPA Dean, Elbert has tried to follow that same leadership and “pass it forward” approach, helping students especially during challenging times.
EDUCATIONAL LEADERS
Elbert recalled that when pursuing his undergraduate degree he had a final semester course with Dr. Earl Alberts in Consumer Behavior and it was like a light went off, “I thought this makes sense to me,” says Elbert. As he pursued his masters degree, Elbert decided he really wanted to try teaching. His mentor Dr. Donald G. Anderson, chair of the marketing department at that time, assisted Elbert in contacting UND Alumnus John Erickson at Central Missouri State. Elbert worked at CMSU for two years before deciding to pursue his Ph.D. at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

One day in the Spring of 1980, the phone rang and to Elbert’s surprise it was Don Anderson, his former UND MS Advisor. Anderson wanted Elbert to consider coming back to UND to teach for the Marketing Department. About the same time, Elbert and his wife Dora had decided they wanted to return to North Dakota to raise their family. After interviewing with CoBPA Dean, Clair Rowe and Anderson, Elbert received a verbal offer. Based on a handshake, the Elbert’s sold their house in Sioux City Iowa and moved back to Grand Forks.

While teaching in the Marketing Department, Elbert was engaged with the Small Business Institute (SBI) , a consulting course program supported by the Small Business Association. Elbert coordinated teams of college students on consulting projects, matching students with small business start-up companies. Elbert served as the college’s Associate Dean and MBA Director from 1989 - 1992. In 1997 he was appointed Dean.“My plan was to serve as dean for five years,” says Elbert. Elbert indicated the average dean serves a term of 3.75 years. When asked what inspired him to assume this role for 17 years, Elbert stated, “There were always goals to achieve and I felt I could be a good contributor, role model and leader for the college.” And that Elbert most definitely achieved.

Through his leadership, Elbert was able to assist in countless new initiatives. A few notable initiatives include: Center for Innovation expansion, the China Program, enhanced fundraising efforts, establishment of the Masters of Science in Applied Economics, development of four signature college symposiums, reorganization and establishment of an AACSB style college advisory council, launch of the Pancratz Career Development Center, and new programs to include Entrepreneurship, the Sport Business minor and Human Resource and Supply Chain Management majors. Elbert notes, “It has not all been perfect,” but says “not everything always works out but the experience allows for you to learn from your mistakes and create a better future.”
COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP
Elbert’s leadership throughout the community and nation are reflected by his commitment to a number of external boards to include: Gate City Bank, Noridian Healthcare Solutions, YMCA Foundation Trustee, Northern Lights Boy Scouts of America Executive Council, Edgewood REIT and ROTARY. He also serves on the Board of Governor’s for Beta Gamma Sigma, the international business education honorary group affiliated with AACSB International. Past board memberships and affiliations include Noridian Mutual Insurance Company, Altru Health System, United Health Resources, Simmons Advertising, YMCA Board of Grand Forks, Newman Parish Council, Grand Forks Chamber of Commerce, U.S. Bank Advisory Board and Cirrus Industries.

NEXT STEPS
As Elbert assumes his new role, he has numerous goals to enhance leadership programming across campus. Elbert plans to get re-engage with consulting work and work on a number of projects. Dennis and his wife, Dora,‘71 have three grown children, Jason Law ‘03 (wife emilee Law ‘03), Christina‘03 (husband Jon ‘03) and Danielle,‘05,‘06 (husband Matt), who are all graduates of UND. They are also the proud grandparents of four grandchildren, Addison, Mason, Benjamin, and Lucas with whom he looks forward to spending much more time. Dean Elbert will impact the college and the university in his new role as he continues to provide his leadership on campus!

Young Alumni Highlights Eleven Hockey: Passion for the Game Jay Fischer is a 2008 graduate of the University of North Dakota with degrees in Math, Physics, and Economics. While a student at UND, Jay served as Student Body President for the 2007-08 school year and became involved in the Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) as a way to gain experience in the analysis of different industries. Following his graduation in 2008, Jay was offered a position as an investment analyst at Wells Capital Management. Currently living in Warroad, MN, Jay is like many of the residents in the upper Midwest, he has a great passion for the sport of hockey. Throughout his education, Jay always knew that he wanted to start his own business. After working with Wells Capital Management, Jay decided it was time to pursue a venture on his own. Consequently, Eleven Hockey was founded in 2010. Jay took the passion he had for hockey and the potential he found in this new strong, light material and has found success in manufacturing customized hockey sticks. After one day of having the sticks for sale online, Eleven Hockey had already made a sale. At this stage, the company didn’t really have any inventory, but their first sale told them that people were interested in this type of product and with the help of friends and family the company grew into a reality. Eleven Hockey serves a very diverse group of consumers with its wood and composite customized hockey sticks. Eleven Hockey is able to produce wooden hockey sticks because it currently utilizes the former manufacturing location of the Christian Brothers Hockey Company. Many of the customers of company are former professional hockey players buying large amounts of hockey sticks for the purpose of autographing. The typical customer of Eleven is seeking a custom, private label hockey stick manufactured specifically for them. The company also produces custom goalie sticks and customized “BOA” brand hockey sticks for youth (high-school level and below) players. The BOA brand offers services for customized team sticks for high-school and other youth league teams. Although the company is fairly new, it has products in approximately 30 stores in the U.S.A. While at UND, Jay remembers his experience with SMIF helping to guide him in the development of his business. “Steve Dennis, Advisor of SMIF, had a great influence on me as a student and a business person.”, says Jay. Additionally, Jay relays credit to Dr. David Flynn; Chair of the Economics Department, Jordan Schuetzle, J.D.; associate professor in Entrepreneurship and practicing attorney at law, and the Small Business Development Center located within the Center for Innovation at UND for their guidance during his education and the formulation of his company.

Tanner Pruess: Artist, Educator, Entrepreneur Pruess is a 2013 graduate from the College of Business and Public Administration with a Master’s of Business Administration degree. While attending UND, he not only studied business, but evolved his interest in art.
Pruess has also started a web design and marketing business named ‘One Guy Marketing’. This business focuses on web design and marketing needs for small businesses.
“My fiancé encouraged me to do some creating of my own,” Pruess said. “She’s also an artist, and she definitely inspired me to start creating my own work.”
His newest venture includes a project called “the Launch Life” which will involve a book that tells several stories of young entrepreneurs’ successes and failures.
Pruess began building a unique style that combines “structured” and “chaotic” elements. He created his first painting in the fall of 2011. Pruess’ artwork was featured during 2013 UND Spirit Week in The Hugo’s Spirit Art Showcase & Silent Auction. His abstract painting, “Discover the Spirit,” was a piece that combined school colors in a way that reveals the innovative, creative, entrepreneurial and spirited legacy of the UND alumni, students, faculty, and staff. Following graduation, Pruess traveled to Shanghai, China, to teach E-Commerce at the University of Shanghai Science & Technology. “ I was able to gain valuable teaching experience at the university level, but also become immersed in the unique Shanghai culture,” said Pruess. Currently, Pruess lives in Rapid City, SD, and is working in human resources for MG Oil. His entrepreneurial spirit continues as he also owns and operates two businesses. Pruess continues to sell original and abstract paintings online and is looking to expand into licensing deals with universities to include their school colors and logos in original paintings.

From the Rink to the Stage Tate Maris, a native of Denver, CO, and graduate of UND with a degree in accountancy (‘12), is a man of many talents. Not only was he a member of the UND men’s hockey team for the past four years but he also has balanced a career as a musician since high school.

Initially Tate’s attention was drawn to UND because of his math high school teacher who was an alumnus of UND. In addition, Tate’s mother worked at Denver University and when the schools would compete against each other in men’s hockey, Tate found himself cheering for UND. He was immediately drawn to the University of North Dakota after witnessing the passion and atmosphere that the UND fans brought to the games. After finishing high school Tate decided to continue his education as a student at UND. Tate had always loved to watch and play hockey growing up so he felt right at home in Grand Forks, ND. Prior to his sophomore year at UND, Tate repeatedly petitioned with the coaches of the hockey team for an opportunity to try out. He was granted a try out for the hockey team and was offered a position as a goaltender. Tate always had a passion for music. Growing up, his parents would always have music playing in their home and he developed a love for music over time. He started playing guitar at the beginning of high school and eventually taught himself to sing as well. As an “acoustic alternative” musician, Tate would play shows in the off season and in his free time between hockey games at local venues. Tate has released two albums, “Like Giants” and “Burn the Ships”, and is currently working on his third. Tate has written all of his own songs and has both of his current albums along with a couple of singles available on iTunes. As a student, Tate enjoyed his experiences as part of the men’s hockey team and also in the organization Toastmasters International, of which UND has a chapter. He was also appreciative of the support and realistic teaching style of his accounting professors, Tom Clement and & Harold Wide to which he credits the reason he decided to pursue a degree in accountancy. Tate received a great deal of support from his coaches on the hockey team, especially goaltender coach and former player, Karl Goehring. 10 | Business & Public Administration
While a student athlete at UND, Tate also participated in the production of “Brad Miller Time” and “Through These Doors”, both of which capture two very different aspects of the men’s hockey team. He has been commended by head coach Dave Hakstol for his positive attitude and growth as a player during his time with the hockey team. When asked to provide a word of advice to potential future students of UND, Tate said,
“I am proud to say that I went to UND. It’s a place where, if you want to have fun you can have fun. The experience itself is what you make it. I’d have to say that whatever you decide to follow, love what you do.”

Unique Partnership with Public Health The Master of Public Administration (MPA) program has entered into a unique collaboration with the Master of Public Health program (MPH) in a move that will allow both programs to grow and diversify their course offerings, students, and faculty. Together, the departments have hired two new faculty members to serve the programs jointly. “This partnership is a great development for our students and faculty, as we are able to expand our course offerings and mentorship opportunities,” said Paul Sum, professor and chair of Political Science and Public Administration. MPA is the graduate program of the department. The MPH is housed in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Students in both the MPA and MPH program will take required cross-disciplined coursework and electives. The new faculty members will teach graduate courses exclusively, along with mentoring graduate students and conducting research in the areas of health and policy. “This collaboration fits very well with the MPA program’s mission, which includes a commitment to instill public service values,” said Dana Harsell, associate professor and MPA director. “Health care is one of the core public service areas in our country today.”

The MPA degree is available as a traditional on-campus program or online program. Students from all over the United States and internationally use up-to-date technology to have a classroom experience concurrent with their on-campus peers. The MPA degree is accredited by NASPAA, the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration.

& Exceptional Alumni As a double major in entrepreneurship and marketing with a minor in sport business, Landon Bahl is just one example of the many passionate students at the UND College of Business and Public Administration. While at UND Landon takes advantage of numerous leadership opportunities around him serving as a student ambassador, public relations officer for Delta Tau Delta fraternity, member of the Sport Business Student Association, marketing intern with UND Athletics, president of NoDAK Nation (student booster group), as well as a member of the Dakota Venture Group, which has allowed him the opportunity to hold a seat on the Edgewood REIT board of directors. Through the partnership with the B. John Barry Challenge Grant, UND alumnae Dottie Dekko established the Dorothie Alm Dekko Endowment aimed to provide scholarships to students interested in the area of entrepreneurship. This scholarship was awarded to Landon for the 20132014 academic year.
In the spring of 2013, Landon and Dottie had the opportunity to meet and share stories while Dottie was on campus for the 2013 Morrison Leadership Summit. Dottie has a wealth of knowledge as she has held a variety of positions to include: school teacher, home economist for Northern States Power, author of three books, co-founder of the first professional soccer team in Minnesota, and opened a chain of clothing stores in the Twin Cities area. Dottie and her daughters Lezlie and Danna, bought the license rights for Chico’s in Minnesota, opening stores throughout the metro area to include stores in St. Cloud, Duluth, and Rochester. Dottie has since sold their territorial license rights for all of the stores and she is currently retired in Naples, FL.

Program Highlights JD/MBA: The Competitive Advantage Tom Kading Ambitious, entrepreneurial, and educated are just three of the many words that can be used to describe 2013 JD/MBA graduate Tom Kading.
working professionals and part-time students, whereas the JD classes were during the day and were typically full-time students.
Kading always knew he wanted to go into business, but thought he would diversify his background by starting with a degree in civil engineering and a minor in business. Kading remembers when touring UND as a high school student he thought he would want to come to UND for Law School. When deciding to start the JD/MBA program Kading felt that the law degree would fit very well with the MBA program.
Kading was grateful to be awarded the Fredrickson & Byron Law and Business Scholarship that is awarded to a JD/MBA student. “When you are a JD/MBA student you have an extra course load and may not have the opportunity to work as much, as you are taxed with classes,” says Kading.
“With a JD/MBA it sets you apart and you save money by doing the combined program” says Kading. Kading completed the JD/MBA in three years which resulted in taking approximately18 credits a semester. He indicated that the programs worked nicely together in that the MBA classes were primarily in the evening and involved more
Kading was not only working with a heavy class load, but launching a successful real estate company on the side. When Kading arrived at UND he began with an internship at the Center for Innovation, working on an entrepreneurial tech job with the chemical engineering department. He became connected with the center and later began renting virtual office space for his latest entrepreneurial venture by starting a real estate enterprise – Precision Property Management & Precision Real Estate and Capital. “I always knew I wanted to do something entrepreneurial and I saw opportunities with property investments,” said Kading. Precision Property, was founded with the intent to become a world-class service in the property management business. Kading is the president of the business and has expanded his service areas to include: Grand Forks and Fargo, ND. Precision Real Estate and Capital manages investment projects in Bismarck, ND; Moorhead, MN; East Grand Forks, MN; Pinal County, AZ; and Polk County, FL. He currently manages approximately 100 homes and works closely with investors. Kading is passionate about continuing to grow his career in the areas of real estate development and investments. While attending UND Kading was part of the Dakota Venture Group (DVG), which is a student run venture capital investment fund. Students complete all due diligence, make the final investment decisions, and negotiate the deal’s term structure. “Being involved in DVG helped open my eyes and understand the in’s and out’s with private investment,” says Kading.

DVG has a unique opportunity in that it holds a student seat on the Edgewood REIT Board of Directors. Kading applied for the position and was selected for this role, providing him with the insights in developing his own board of directors and has provided great connections with business professionals. Kading relocated to Fargo, ND where a new office location was constructed for Precision Real Estate and Capital. He has recently completed and passed the bar. In the future he can see himself using his law and business degrees in packaging business deals and partnership agreements. Kading hopes to work on compressing everything he has learned in his MBA into a business plan for his companies.
Kristen Heck Originally from Bloomington, MN, Heck had a legacy at UND with both of her parents being UND Law School alumni. Heck completed her undergraduate degree in Business management/human resources at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, MN. When deciding to pursue the combined JD/MBA, Heck said, “Great combination and more people should be doing it.” Heck also indicated that choosing UND for her graduate work financially made sense. While attending UND, Heck found a unique opportunity to get involved with the Dakota Venture Group (DVG). Heck indicated that she “stumbled upon it” when researching the MBA but waited until her second year to apply to be part of the organization. Heck started as the marketing director and by spring 2012 became the President of DVG.

When speaking of her experience in the JD/ MBA program she indicated this skill set was something she could take to a variety of places. “It’s a valuable combination of real life skills, theoretical processes and thinking,” said Heck. As Heck neared graduation she started to explore prospects in Washington D.C. This idea stemmed Kristen Heck from her experience in the Economics 509 course, which focuses on business and government and includes a trip over spring break to Washington, DC where students get to interact with legislators, corporations, and alumni in the DC area. Currently Heck is employed at DMI, a consulting and IT solutions firm headquartered out of Bethesda, MD. She works as an analyst in a new division helping with mobile security solutions. “ My role is the perfect combination of my two degrees in that I will work on some intellectual property issues as well as working with final pricing and financial analyst.”
“It’s a valuable combination of real life skills and theoretical processes and thinking,” said Heck.
Heck indicated she was able to learn significant leadership skills as she had never run a meeting before. She also had the opportunity to learn about private equity and angel investing. “Students are motivated beyond class, it takes a lot of time,” says Heck.
Heck said she has a new pride for North Dakota seeing how many people do great things. She appreciated the smaller campus at UND and felt that the campus was engaging and Spring 2014 business.UND.edu | 15

Donna Altepeter named the 2014 Beta Gamma Sigma Outstanding Chapter Advisor! Beta Gamma Sigma is an international honor society that recognizes business excellence. Donna is an instructor in accounting and has served for over fifteen years as the UND Chapter Advisor. She was nominated by the UND CoBPA and selected for the award by the BGS Collegiate Chapter Operations Task Force. Donna will receive a plaque, cash stipend and all expenses paid to a Collegiate Officer Training Seminar during 2014-15. The award will be officially announced at the BGS luncheon held in Singapore on April 7th.

Paul Sum
Professor of Political Science and Public Administration, and Department Chair Paul Sum is the recipient of the UND Foundation/B.C. Gamble Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching, Research or Creative Activity, and Service. Paul has chaired the Political Science & Public Administration Department since July 2012, excels as a teacher as well as in research and service. Because of his excellence in all three areas, he has been named the Outstanding Faculty Scholar. “His record of achievement and his reputation speak for themselves,” said Professor Mark Jendrysik. “He is an asset to his department, to the University, and to the state and citizens of North Dakota. He is a serious scholar with an international reputation and one of the finest people I have had the honor to work with in my academic career.”

CoBPA Appoints O’Neill & Jensen Associate Deans of Administration & Academics The College of Business and Public Administration is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Patrick O’Neill, as the Associate Dean of Administration and Dr. Jason Jensen, as the Associate Dean of Academics. They joined Dean Dennis Elbert on the administrative leadership team for the College of Business and Public Administration (CoBPA) in the fall of 2013.
O’Neill O’Neill is serving as the Associate Dean of Administration and is charged with providing oversight of the CoBPA financials, and the administrative accreditation process for AACSB International, ATMAE and NASPAA accrediting agencies. He works with departments on the recruiting process, monitors policies and functions regarding merit review and promotion and tenure, coordinates reporting for all fellowships, professorships,endowed chairs, and directors, among other leadership duties in the college. O’Neill received his Ph.D. from Boston College. His area of expertise is microeconomics. He has taught a variety of courses at the University of North Dakota, Boston College, and Newbury Junior College. O’Neill joined the faculty at UND in 1987. He served as the chair of the department of economics at the University of North Dakota from 2001 – 2011.
Jensen Jensen serves as the Associate Dean of Academics and is charged with supervising the Office of Academic Advisement and the Pancratz Career Development Center. He oversees student-related activities; curriculum and program development, and online education. He also coordinates the academic accreditation process. Jensen received his Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky. His areas of expertise include public management and budgeting, health administration, social entrepreneurship and nonprofits. He has taught across a wide area in public administration as well as methodology. Jensen joined the faculty at UND in 1999 to teach public administration and health administration courses. His research has appeared in such outlets as Public Administration Review, the Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory and Policy Studies Journal. Jensen served as MPA Director for six years, where he directed the program through reaccreditation. Jensen also serves as the MBA Director.
His research has appeared in such outlets as American Journal of Business Education, the Journal of College Teaching & Learning, Faith and Economics, The Journal of Financial Education, American Journal of Economics and Sociology, Applied Economics, and Southern Economic Journal, among others.

Faculty Highlights Executive-in-Residence UND Alumnus, Marv Morrison
The Department of Marketing was pleased to host UND alumnus, Marv Morrison for a two week executive-in-residence program during the 2013-14 academic year. “Mr. Morrison’s wealth of professional experience provided a great experiential learning opportunity for our students. The dedicated time Mr. Morrison was able to spend with students in and out of the classroom enhanced the relevancy of what they were learning and how they could better prepare themselves for their careers. “Students get excited when they get to connect to the ‘real world,’’ says Dr. Mary Askim-Lovseth, professor and chair of marketing department. Morrison graduated in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science in business administration with an emphasis on management. Prior to retiring in February 2012, Morrison worked as the Vice President of Sales for Alcon Labs in Ft. Worth, Texas. He also held a variety of sales positions as a regional sales director for Dow Chemical, and a variety of sales management positions with Gillette. While on campus, Morrison shared his experiences with students in relationship marketing classes and venture initiation classes. He had the opportunity to spend time with the Dakota Venture Group, and took part in a luncheon with a small group of students. Morrison indicated he had been discussing the idea of coming back to campus with CoBPA Senior Development Director, Kim Woods for over 18 months. “Once you have come to end of your career one important thing is service,” says Morrison.

Student Highlights Edson and Margaret Larson Foundation provides $10,000 Student Scholarships!
UND College of Business students and College of Engineering and Mines students were the grateful recipients of the new Edson and Margaret Larson student scholarships. Edson Larson was an alumnus of UND. He graduated in 1951 with a BS in Commerce and continued on to be a successful farmer and business man. During WWII he was a member of the Army Air Corporation. Edson and Margaret married and made their home in Mayville, ND. This new scholarship is the largest student scholarship to be awarded at the College of Business and Public Administration. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.25 or higher, have spent a minimum of two years at UND, be a resident of North Dakota and have intent to pursue graduate studies at a North Dakota institution and work in the state following graduation.
For the inaugural year of this scholarship the following students were awarded this scholarship:

Impact Highlights • In the 2012/2013 academic year, the Pancratz Career Development Center (PCDC) experienced a 178.67% increase in student contacts over 2011/2012. The PCDC offers programming in professional development, mentoring program, interviewstream software, employer relations, assistance with internships and co-op experiences. “The center is the bridge to connect me to the real world. I can say with certainty, my future looks a lot brighter because of the Pancratz Career Center and its staff. It is a very efficient and effective resource that adds tremendously to my experience here at UND.” - James Lyght, Senior Majoring in Banking and Financial Economics, hometown island of Grenada. • UND Alumnus, Terry Severson recently established the Harold L. and Io A. Business of Energy Endowment. Funds will support faculty in establishing a new energy curriculum initiative in this evolving academic area. • Additionally, a new endowment to support Executive Scholars was established to encourage and provide support for students to have the opportunity to get involved on boards and learn first hand leadership in board governance.
• In Fall 2013, Dr. Chi Ming Tan joined the faculty at the CoBPA as the Page Endowed Chair of Economics, established by UND Alumni Greg and Cindy Page. Dr. Tan will teach for the Masters in Science in Applied Economics and advanced undergraduate courses. • A. Kirk & Janet Lanterman established the Lanterman Educational Leadership Dean’s Endowment providing the Dean with the discretion to utilize funds toward faculty research, recruitment, retention, and conferences.
