UND CoBPA PANCRATZ NEWSLETTER SPRING 2019

GREET I N G S F R O M T H E

PANCRATZ CAREER DEVELOPMENT CENTER This has been an exciting year for us in the Pancratz Center. We celebrated a year of outstanding student successes, a few examples of which you’ll see on the Student Features page. CoBPA students continue to amaze us every semester with their dedication to achieving their professional goals! The Pancratz Professional Closet officially opened this fall. Alumni and friends of the CoBPA generously donated professional items for students attending career fairs, interviews, and networking events. There’s something special about the closet, as most students who visited found an item or two that worked well for their needs. We are continuing to grow our inventory as the fall semester approaches so students can be ready for the fantastic opportunities that the semester will hold. We made big changes to our Pancratz Mentor Program by implementing a cohort style model for the 2018-2019 academic year. This allowed us to streamline the program and have each mentor/mentee relationship begin in the fall. We ended the year with our first annual program event where mentors, mentees, administrators, and faculty attended to celebrate their successes and network with other students and professionals. This was a fantastic way to highlight each relationship, and we plan to continue this event each spring. Employers, we’re happy to help throughout the summer if you have positions you’d like to promote or internships you’d like to create. We’re always excited to connect great employers to CoBPA students, so we can work with you to find ways to build a campus presence such as helping plan an event, hosting meetings with students in the Pancratz Center, connecting with faculty, and more. Students, there are many events such as career fairs and networking opportunities, early in the fall semester, so we want you to be prepared! We’re available for appointments during the summer in person, on the phone, or virtually. Let us know how we can help. Thank you for your support of what we do in the Pancratz Center. We are honored to be part of your experience with UND and the College of Business and Public Administration. -Kathy and Kathleen

PROFESSIONAL CLOSET After the launch of the professional closet this fall, word has been spreading among the students about the incredible brands and range of items available to them at no cost! Each student is allowed to select and keep two items per semester, and most students who have visited the closet have had great success in finding what they need. Currently we are looking to expand our men’s selection of suits and pants and our selection of blazers and suits for women. If you have gently used or new professional items that you’d like to donate, please contact us at und.pancratzcenter@und.edu. Thank you to everyone who has already donated! Your generosity is making a difference for CoBPA students.

87% of students who visited the closet found an item that suited their needs!

MENTOR PROGRAM

This was an incredible year for the Pancratz Mentor Program. Our mentees represented many of the majors within the College of Business and Public Administration, and mentors were located in Grand Forks, Fargo, Minneapolis, North Carolina, and Washington, D.C. Technology helped bridge the distance between out-of-state matches, and all of the matches were able to build authentic and meaningful connections. We made significant changes to the program with our new cohort model. Through our updated application process, we selected 11 students as mentees, and the program began for all of the mentor/mentee matches in August. We held a kickoff event for the mentees which included information about how to introduce themselves to their mentors and gave an overview of how to create SMART goals. Another new component was an introduction to CliftonStrengths. We provided access codes for the mentees to complete CliftonStrengths, and we met one-on-one to talk about how to understand and build their strengths as well as appreciate the strengths of others. The end-of-the-year celebration was an exciting addition to the program, with many of the matches in attendance. We heard from each of the mentees about the impact having a mentor made in his or her life. Mentor Kevin Newberger from Microsoft traveled to the event from North Carolina, and he delivered inspirational remarks to the group about the importance of taking risks as a student and as a professional. Accounting student and mentee Allison Mulroy spoke about the many ways her mentor helped her gain what she described as “invaluable, unique experience and insight into the world of public accounting. We are incredibly grateful to our exceptional group of mentors! Their willingness to devote time out of their busy schedules to help students is outstanding. The guidance the mentors provided will have lasting impacts on the lives of their mentees. Thank you to the mentors, mentees, and supporters of the program. We are looking forward to another year of mentoring success!

“I honestly cannot speak enough as to how instrumental the Pancratz Center has been to my overall professional development throughout my journey here at UND! From resume reviews, to an interview streaming service, to their very own professional closet, the Pancratz Center is truly a one-stop shop for any CoBPA student to help stand out professionally and ultimately land the job of their dreams. Watching myself grow professionally over the years has been such a gratifying experience, and it just would not have been possible without all the amazing support and guidance I have received from the Pancratz Center!

HUNTER SCZEPANSKI ALISON HAAG

Masters of Applied Economics, Data Analytics Intern at Border States Electric

Marketing Senior, Carrier Sales Intern at C.H. Robinson “Use the resources that UND has available like the Pancratz Center. You have unlimited access to people that are willing to go above and beyond to help you, all you need to do is go in and ask for help. I think a lot of people are intimidated to ask for help, but I know I wouldn’t be where I am today without the help from the people in the Pancratz Center, my mentors, professors, and my parents.”

“I would tell students to reach out to the Pancratz Center as early as possible, so they can start applying for internships early on while having a tailored resume available. I would also tell students to not get discouraged when getting rejected by certain companies, because if it is meant to be, it will happen!”

SARAH FRALEY Marketing Senior, National Account Manager at Coyote Logistics

“I have gained so much insight from visiting the Pancratz Center. They gave me the tools and resources throughout my college career to help me reach my educational and career goals. Everyone at the Pancratz Center has been amazing.”

KALEB DSCHAAK Marketing and Political Science Senior, University Information Technology Intern

“The Pancratz really helps me plan for the future. Often times I can get overwhelmed by the vast amount of options outside of the college. Luckily, I’m able to sit down with someone at the Pancratz Center who can help me with any professional questions I may have. Being able to confidently apply for opportunities gives me the support I need to be successful!”

DEAN REMARKS Joining the UND College of Business & Public Administration this past fall as Dean has been an incredible journey. When visiting campus during my interviews and then upon my arrival on campus, I quickly realized what a treasure we had within the college with the Pancratz Career Development Center. Kathy Lund our Center Director and Kathleen Kittridge our Career Coach have established outstanding programming, mentoring opportunities, and career resources to prepare our students to be leaders in their industries. This is what truly sets our students apart and assists them in not only launching into their careers, but engaging in opportunities to build an impressive resume to be competitive in the workforce. We greatly appreciate all of the engagement that our alumni and friends provide our students through mentoring relationships, networking opportunities, internships, and recruitment of our students. The pride of our UND Alumni, the excellence in our faculty, and the determination of our students continues to impress me and excite me. I look forward to

EMPLOYER

HIGHLIGHT Allison Bauman, Global Sourcing Analyst from 3M, visited the Pancratz Center in the fall of 2018 to recruit for an open internship. Alli graduated in May 2018 with a major in Operations and Supply Chain Management, and she knew she wanted to bring 3M to campus to recruit business students. The fact that it happened within a few months of graduation illustrates the drive and passion Alli has for helping CoBPA students. We are incredibly grateful for her dedication!

HANDSHAKE Handshake is a recruiting platform for students and employers. Employers can post internships, part-time and full-time job opportunities for UND students, and students can build an online profile and apply for those positions. In addition to being an excellent job and internship search tool, Handshake is also used to report all internships taken for credit. The Pancratz Center communicates with students, faculty internship coordinators, and on-the-job supervisors to coordinate the necessary steps. Log in and create an account at und.joinhandshake.com to check out a variety of job and internship opportunities! In addition to Handshake, there are many other ways we can help connect employers with CoBPA students. Contact us to build a partnership!
