STUDENT PROFILES

I came to Notre Dame for several reasons. First, because it allows students to tailor their courses and discover what they really like. Second, because it has an unparalleled school spirit that makes for an amazing undergraduate experience.

BERNARDO ELIZONDO MONTERREY, MEXICO CLASS OF 2018 FINANCE AND STATISTICS

I have had the opportunity to get involved in plenty of extracurricular activities, from intramural sports to business clubs. I have done all my internships in Mexico. During the summer after my first year I worked in consulting in Monterrey, and the other two summers I worked in venture capital in Mexico City.

STUDENT PROFILES

One of the things that I found most attractive about Notre Dame was its rural setting; having lived in a large city my entire life, I was excited about spending four years at a college town. Additionally, it is one of the few universities that combines religion, academics, and a strong school spirit.

CASANDRA ESTEVE MEXICO CITY, MEXICO CLASS OF 2018 SOCIOLOGY STUDIO ART MINOR

Since my first year, I have participated in Mustard, the creative writing club on campus, where I had attended meetings and shared my work with other students. I am also a part of the Snite Museum Gallery Teaching Program, where I have taught classes about art history and interpretation and given tours of Notre Dame’s art museum. I have also enjoyed attending the wide variety of classes that RecSports offers in the afternoons. I found my internship at the American Benevolent Society in Mexico particularly interesting. During this internship, I helped undocumented children gain lawful status as both Mexican and American citizens. This was a really rewarding experience, as I got to learn about immigration issues in these two countries and make a difference in young kids’ lives.

STUDENT PROFILES

After deciding to major in a very technical field, I was looking for a school that would provide me with a strong numerical background, but would also emphasize the importance of approaching education through an all-encompassing liberal arts structure. Notre Dame’s holistic academic outlook and requirements fit my ideal undergraduate academic experience perfectly.

ARTURO PRÉSTAMO MONTERREY, MEXICO CLASS OF 2019 MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

My extracurricular experiences at Notre Dame have been a defining feature of my education. From developing a coding workshop for non-proficient programmers and working as a student fundraiser at the Development Center, to collaborating in projects alongside toptier financial services and management consulting firms through the Student International Business Council (SIBC), participating in extracurriculars has made this an extraordinary learning experience for me. My favorite experience at Notre Dame thus far has been managing a student government campaign for the presidential and vicepresidential candidates this semester. I enjoyed learning about the community at the University, what people like and dislike, and what can be done to make Notre Dame a better place. In the end, this was a very fulfilling experience that made me realize just how valuable this University and its students, faculty, and staff really are.

I chose Notre Dame because of its combination of rigorous academics and community-based social life. I knew that the community at Notre Dame would encourage disciplined studying and professional development and simultaneously offer many opportunities for fun and a warm community feel.

MARA INÉS ARANGUREN GUADALAJARA, MEXICO CLASS OF 2018 COMPUTER ENGINEERING

During my first two years at Notre Dame, I was part of the Human Development Conference logistics committee. I also conducted research with faculty at the Kellogg Institute. Furthermore, I have participated in the basketball, volleyball, and boxing recreational teams on campus. Lastly, I have been very involved in Notre Dame Students Empowering Through Engineering Development (NDSEED), a club that aims to help rural communities by building bridges across flooding rivers. As part of NDSEED, I traveled with 11 other students to build a bridge in Nicaragua last summer. I was involved in the project from start to finish, participating in research, planning, fundraising, and the actual building of the bridge. This was an extremely enriching experience, as it allowed me to identify new passions and contribute to a project that actually helped an underserved community.

STUDENT PROFILES

I chose Notre Dame for two reasons: first, because its liberal arts curriculum and wide array of extracurricular opportunities would allow me to explore many different fields and subjects; second, because it has an extremely positive atmosphere where people go out of their way to help others out.

MARÍA VILLALTA MEXICO CITY, MEXICO CLASS OF 2017 MARKETING MAJOR

Extracurricular activities have been an essential part of my experience at Notre Dame. I currently work as an assistant for Student Programs at the Kellogg Institute for International Studies, am the co-head of logistics for the Human Development Conference, and do research with the International Scholars Program. I am also a member of the Student International Business Council and the Jubilee Initiative for Financial Inclusion, and I was part of the Sophomore Class Council last year. I really enjoyed my internship at Beachwaver Co., the hairstyling company that was the 2015 and 2016 Hair Sponsor for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. My duties involved doing marketing research on the hairstyling industry in countries where Beachwaver Co. wanted to expand. I did a vast amount of research on the Mexican and Australian markets and created a pitch presentation that was showcased to one of the company’s most important clients.

STUDENT PROFILES

I chose Notre Dame primarily because of its undergraduate focus. Unlike many other top-tier schools, Notre Dame dedicates most of its resources to undergraduate teaching and provides students with an unmatched academic experience.

ROBERTO ELOSĂšA MONTERREY, MEXICO CLASS OF 2019 FINANCE AND STATISTICS

At Notre Dame, I have been very involved in the HesburghYusko Scholars Program. As part of this program, I got to travel to Oregon and Chiapas last year to perform community service. Furthermore, I am currently an intern at the International Admissions office, where I have helped organize events for international admits and contributed to the University’s efforts to increase the diversity of its student body. One of my favorite experiences was traveling to Chicago to present a research project to Bain & Company, a leading management consulting firm. This project allowed me to explore my career options, develop my leadership skills, and meet successful Notre Dame alumni who shared their experiences with us.

STUDENT PROFILES

I chose Notre Dame because it has a truly unique sense of community. I had heard about the Notre Dame family before, and I had the opportunity to experience it first-hand during the Hesburgh International Scholar Experience. Notre Dame offers a very complete undergraduate experience, offering programs and activities related to service, religion, and academics.

VERÓNICA MÁRQUEZ MEXICO CITY, MEXICO CLASS OF 2019 CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

Last semester, I went to Clemson University to represent Banco de Alimentos Panamá at a startup competition. I have had the opportunity to participate in many clubs and activities during my first two years at Notre Dame. I am the director of outreach at the Association for Latino Professionals, and I have participated at the McCloskey Business Plan Competition and done community service abroad with the KidsAlive International Organization. So far, my favorite experience has been my internship in Sao Paulo. This internship was eye-opening; it allowed me to learn about the Brazilian startup ecosystem as I developed a plan to help businesses transition to e-commerce. It also allowed me to get immersed in the Brazilian culture, learn Portuguese, and visit some of the country’s impressive attractions.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Between graduating from Notre Dame and starting grad school, I worked in San Francisco for a tech company called Wizeline. Because I’d taken advantage of the fact that at Notre Dame, electrical engineering students can take computer science classes as electives (and vice versa), I was competent enough in programming to take on a “hybrid” role, in which I worked as a bridge between our technical and non-technical staff. I worked directly with engineers and was very involved on the technical side of things, but at the same time interacted with customers on a regular basis. This experience gave me a unique chance to see not only how software products are made, but also how they are sold.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AND INTERNSHIPS

FAVORITE THING ABOUT NOTRE DAME

Notre Dame is very special in that Domers absolutely love Notre Dame. Alumni are very keen on helping students get the wings that they will need to fly in the real world, which is most apparent in alumni networking and recruiting. In one of my engineering classes, for example, successful alumni came to campus to discuss how they built their tech businesses and to give us career advice.

HOW NOTRE DAME CHANGED ME

I was very fortunate to have had professors who had a lot of faith in me. This was without a doubt the most valuable part of my Notre Dame experience; it gave me the confidence that I needed to do well at Notre Dame and to succeed at Wizeline and in graduate school.

I participated in Bengal Bouts (boxing) and in club soccer. I was also involved in research projects, which were important learning experiences for me. I worked as a data scientist intern at Ooyala one summer, which was an excellent opportunity to apply what I had learned at Notre Dame and to complement it with hands-on experience using real-world technologies.

FINANCE AND PSYCHOLOGY STUDIO ART MINOR

WORK EXPERIENCE

I currently work as an Associate Consultant for Bain & Company in their Chicago office. In my role, I work with clients in a variety of industries to help them solve their most pressing business concerns. On the extracurricular side, I work with Bain’s Notre Dame recruiting team and serve on the volunteering committee for Rowe Elementary School, a charter school in Chicago.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AND INTERNSHIPS

During my time at Notre Dame, I was involved in entrepreneurial initiatives including Mendoza’s McCloskey Business Plan competition and the University Innovation Fellows program. I also served on the board of the Student International Business Council and worked as the Business Manager for the University’s student newspaper, The Observer. During my summers, I interned at different consulting firms including Auric Consulting, Deloitte Consulting, and Bain & Company. My extracurriculars and internships helped me develop an interest in consulting and, more broadly, a passion for solving problems.

FAVORITE THING ABOUT NOTRE DAME

Although there are many things that make Notre Dame special, my favorite thing about Notre Dame is the community–the students, faculty, and alumni. As an undergraduate, I was able to meet students and interact with professors in a variety of settings–from activities with my residence hall and casual coffee chat conversations to interdisciplinary courses and lecture seminar series. As an alumna, I continue to be amazed by the Notre Dame network and the countless networking and learning opportunities it provides.

HOW NOTRE DAME CHANGED ME

Notre Dame instilled in me a curiosity to keep learning beyond the classroom, and to use my education to tackle societal issues in an effort to help the communities around me.

FINANCE ECONOMICS

WORK EXPERIENCE

After graduating from Notre Dame I went to work for Goldman Sachs in London, where I advised banks and helped them recover from the European financial crisis. Subsequently, I moved back to Mexico to work for IGNIA, a venture capital firm, where I invest in startups that advance social inclusion in Mexico. In August I will be heading to Boston to get my MBA at Harvard Business School.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AND INTERNSHIPS

Notre Dame’s breathtaking array of extracurriculars allowed me to learn about finance outside the classroom in a realworld context. I participated in the Wall Street Club, the Student International Business Council, and the Notre Dame Investment Office. These activities opened a variety of internship opportunities, ultimately leading me to work for Goldman Sachs in New York over my summer breaks.

FAVORITE THING ABOUT NOTRE DAME

The Notre Dame experience does not end at graduation. The ties that I formed with and through the Notre Dame community follow me everywhere I go, providing me with a strong support network and sense of belonging.

HOW NOTRE DAME CHANGED ME

Attending Notre Dame was a transformational experience that developed my own perspectives of the world around me, leading to a stronger sense of identity and purpose in my academic, professional and personal endeavors.

I am in charge of developing new business in oil and gas processing and looking for growth opportunities through acquisitions in the chemical industry. I will be starting my MBA in the evenings at Rice University in August.

FAVORITE THING ABOUT NOTRE DAME

Notre Dame has a very healthy atmosphere. The alumni network is impressive and has global outreach. This network begins in the classroom where you are expected to collaborate and know you can depend on your classmates.
