JOE ETZEL FIELD:

PILOTS BASEBA LL STA DI UM FUN DR A I S I N G P R OJEC T

Our vision for Joe Etzel Field is to create a space for players, coaches and spectators that provides the resources and accommodations critical for the long-term success of Pilot baseball. These renovations of Joe Etzel Field, combined with the amenities of the University’s Chiles Center, the Clive Charles Soccer Complex, and a future Recreation and Wellness Center, will create a vibrant center for not only the campus but also the larger Portland community.

A LETTER FROM OUR COACH CHRIS SPERRY

DEAR PORTLAND PILOTS FAMILY, As we look to the future of Pilots baseball, we do so with great enthusiasm and excitement. For many, the most exciting endeavor in our midst is the planned upgrade of Joe Etzel Field, an exciting project that will help set the tone for baseball on The Bluff for the foreseeable future. In collaboration with 360 Architecture we have created a vision for a new baseball field that keeps the facility at the current site of Joe Etzel Field, where campus life is teeming and abundant. The anticipated completion of the Recreation and Wellness Center across the street will demand that a new thoroughfare bordering the ballpark be designed, and the park itself will serve as a point of connection between the east and west sides of campus. Foot traffic will be increased and the renovated ballpark will reach out to students, faculty and staff like never before. The planned renovation for Joe Etzel Field will be phased, beginning with the installation of a synthetic playing surface, lights, and new fences that will alter the park dimensions in subtle but exciting ways. Berm seating is planned beyond the field of play, between first base and right field, and future phases are being developed to include new coaches offices, a locker room, press box, relocated scoreboard, and covered seating.

As you study the renderings in this brochure, I think you will agree that there is an exciting vision for the future home of Pilots baseball: a home that will allow us to recruit, train, and play in ways we never have before. We anticipate the finished cost of the Phase I to be around $1.6 - $2.1 million with the remaining two phases estimated at approximately $4-$5 million. This is a critical time in the history of the program. With the leadership of athletics director Scott Leykam, project fundraising co-chairs Joe Etzel and Larree Renda, and Colin McGinty from the University Development Office, our shared dream for a new ballpark is real and significant. As we share the vision with you and other people of influence in the coming weeks and months, I ask that you allow us to converse with you about making a contribution that will help us realize our goal. Completion of the first phase, as well as the number and completion date of subsequent phases, depends on the commitment and generosity of the University of Portland baseball community.

GO PILOTS! SINCERELY,

COACH SPERRY

The proposed renovation of Joe Etzel field will create a vibrant athletic/ recreation complex on campus along with the Chiles Center, the Clive Charles Soccer Complex and the new student Recreation and Wellness Center. The addition of field lighting will allow for evening programming on campus, which would be open to the entire student body.
