→ Do you have a unique vision for your college education and believe in collaborative learning? At Johnston, you have the freedom to create your own individual academic path within an intentional, consensus-based community.
An EDUCATION LIKE NO OTHER. As a student in Johnston, you shape your own education by crafting your unique emphasis—Johnston’s version of a major. Up to 200 talented and passionate students make up the Johnston Center, each with their own education goals and connection to community. Through Johnston, you can pursue traditional classes as well as seminars that connect multiple disciplines. Here in this vibrant community, you debate and challenge ideas with faculty and peers. When classes end, Johnston students and professors can be found discussing current events, listening to live music, or reading favorite quotes on the Bekins porch. Once a week, the community gathers to exchange dialogue and make decisions through a consensus model.

Johnston students call two residence halls home— Bekins and Holt Hall Inside you will find a coffeehouse, meditation room, computer center, classrooms, art studio, music room, and faculty offices.

WELCOME WHAT’S POSSIBLE. In Johnston, you work alongside dedicated faculty to craft your own course of study. Instead of grades, you’ll create course contracts that highlight your aims for each class and then receive written evaluations that will help you understand how you have achieved your goals for the course. You’ll have a deeper understanding of your chosen emphasis, and an even better understanding of yourself.

AFTER JOHNSTON, GRADUATES HAVE GONE ON TO... Work in community advocacy and social justice with nonprofit organizations, such as the Peace Corps, Teach for America, and the Northwest Youth Corps
Pursue careers in industry and government as urban planners, art therapists, communicators, or environmental lawyers
