The global use of geographic information systems (GIS) and location analytics is expected to double by 2023, becoming a $10 billion industry (BusinessWire.com). A key driver in this growth is the use of location intelligence by the private sector. With 80 percent of business data containing geographic information, location analytics delivers insights into markets, customers, services, logistics, supply chains, and asset and risk management.
The initiative is advancing a wide array of projects at the intersection of GIS and business. These include:
A U N I Q U E PA RTNERSHIP The Spatial Business Initiative is a unique alliance between the University of Redlands School of Business and Esri, the global leader in mapping software, that aims to maximize the understanding and effectiveness of GIS in business through education, publishing, research, and consulting.

ADVANCED LOCATION ANALY TICS CURRICULUM with a concentration in location analytics. Building on a long history of having a GIS emphasis in the on-ground MBA program, the University of Redlands offers a one-of-akind online MBA with a concentration in location analytics. Graduates will be prepared to use the power of location intelligence to solve complex business problems, improve strategic decision making, and garner deep locational insight to optimize the organizational value chain.

in location analytics. A certificate program in location analytics will launch at the University of Redlands starting in January 2019. The program, which consists of a series of four classes, will be offered online as well as on the Redlands campus

PUBLICATIONS business book. The book, Spatial Business: Competing and Leading with Location Intelligence, will be published by Esri Press in June 2019. Aimed at professional and business school audiences, the book will explore the nature and advantages of using location analytics in business, moving from an overview of the field to specific case studies.

case studies. A series of stand-alone multimedia case studies elucidating how spatial business can be used in marketing, sales, service, logistics, supply chain, and customer retention is being developed to supplement business school curricula.

survey. The industry-wide 2018 GIS and Location Intelligence Use in Business Survey reveals how businesses use location analytics, including documents, strategies, costs, benefits, risks, challenges, and trends.
ADVISORY SUPPORT FOR BUSINESSES Business Academy. This immersive and accelerated three-day event addresses the need for training that blends business knowledge with location analytics. It is offered several times a year and is hosted hosted on both the University of Redlands and Esri campuses in Redlands, California.

training. The Spatial Business Initiative sponsors executive retreats and workshops for leaders at Esri and other parts of the private sector.

The initiative contributes to the work of the Esri Business Advisory Council and acts in other advisory capacities.

DED I C ATED LE A DERSH IP Thomas Horan, Senecal Endowed Dean at the University of Redlands School of Business and a member of Esri’s Business Advisory Council, works with Professors James Pick and Avijit Sarkar to direct the initiative through the University of Redlands Center for Spatial Business. A steering committee is comprised of members of both the University of Redlands and Esri communities.
R EDL A N DS: A LE A DER IN SPATIA L ED U C ATI O N The University of Redlands is a leader in spatial education through both its School of Business and College of Arts and Sciences: n The
School of Business is preeminent in the field, with indepth history and expertise in GIS for business. In addition to offering an MBA with a concentration in location analytics, it is the only business school that requires a location analytics course for undergraduates and hosts two GIS for business research enterprises: the Center for Spatial Business and Institute for Spatial Economic Analysis (ISEA).
n The
College of Arts and Sciences offers master’s degrees in GIS, as well as an undergraduate minor in spatial studies.
n The
University of Redlands also hosts the Center for Spatial Studies, which helps integrate spatial thinking and technologies into liberal arts instruction, research, and service throughout the University.
