Over 150 guests joined us for the showcase of this academic talent at the inaugural Our House event held at the University’s Armacost Library in May 2013. A colorful and energetic gathering, this event featured vibrant presentations and works of art by Redlands faculty and staff, with authors signing copies of their books, and guests appreciatively sampling the variety of scholarly offerings. This year, we once again celebrate the University of Redlands’ impressive approach to scholarly and creative pursuits. We note that this year’s booklet highlights the growing body of sponsored research being conducted on the Redlands campus, with grants awarded in areas ranging from the humanities to the social sciences, natural sciences, and education. Equally notable are the substantial creative and artistic accomplishments of our faculty represented in this volume, including poetry, art, theatre, and music. The research and creative activities of faculty and staff infuse our teaching and curriculum and play an important role in our students’ lives both in the classroom and beyond. The opportunities created through scholar-student collaborations provide for a dynamic, interactive learning community that encourages the aspirations and achievements of our students, fostering in them confidence, service to others, a sense of their own potential, and for some, a particular path in life. It is an environment in which students learn from seasoned professionals—and learn with one another—to generate new knowledge and creative forms of expression. This compilation represents the discourse, disciplined inquiry, and creative activity of the academy of the past two years at the University of Redlands, featuring work from the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business, and School of Education, as well as our administrators and staff members. “Our House,” the theme for our volume and its accompanying celebratory event, is our way to pay homage to the sense of belonging we feel at this place and to the collective energy, wisdom, innovation, and creativity of the University of Redlands culture. I hope you enjoy reviewing the accomplishments and explorations depicted in these pages. Sincerely,

David Fite Interim Provost and Chief Academic Officer University of Redlands

John Stuart Mill: For Well-being of Mankind, the latest book by Professor of Philosophy Xinyan Jiang, was written in Chinese and may be the most systematic and comprehensive study of Mill published in China up to now. The book is aimed at not only contributing to scholarship on the English philosopher and political economist, but also promoting and understanding of those universal values that have great significance for the Chinese people’s current struggle for a better China. Jiang, a former faculty member in Peking University’s Department of Philosophy, has actively engaged in East-West philosophical dialogue for decades, and has been published in both Chinese and Western philosophy and given guest lectures in mainland China, Taiwan, and Singapore.

Law, honor and citizenship

in maritime America

Matthew Raffety’s “The Republic Afloat,” published in 2013 by the University of Chicago Press, shines a light on the brutal and insular culture of the sea in the pre-Civil War period between 1789 and 1861. The historian of the early American republic reveals in his book the ways that merchant seamen sought to articulate the ideals of freedom and citizenship before the courts of the land—and how they helped to shape the laws of the young republic. By examining how and why merchant seamen and their officers came into contact with the law, Raffety exposes the complex relationship between brutal crimes committed at sea and the development of a legal consciousness both within the judiciary and among seafarers in this period. “The Republic Afloat” is of particular interest to historians of labor, law, maritime culture and national identity in the early republic.

School of Business Professor James B. Pick teamed up with Redlands MBA alumnus Tetsushi Nishida of Japan and Professor Xi Zhang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Tianjin University to explore the determinants of information technology (IT) throughout China. In “Determinants of China’s Technology Utilization and Availability 2006-2009: A Spatial Analysis,” the trio mapped how people used mobile phones, the internet, broadband, and fixed phones, which revealed highest use in the megacities of Beijing and Shanghai, high-moderate use in the east and southeast, and very low use in the far west and north. Using spatial analysis, the group proposed regional IT development policies that are specific to geographic regions of China.

The University of Redlands Language and Literacy Lab (URL3) is a collaborative effort between Assistant Professor Susan Porter, chair of the Education Specialist program in the School of Education, and faculty members in the Truesdail Center for Communicative Disorders. During this summer program launched in 2013, graduate students from both programs worked with at-risk children from the Redlands area to help them build their reading and language skills. Many of the children who attended the weekly clinic sessions were English language learners and from high poverty backgrounds. The practicum gave invaluable cross-disciplinary experience to the graduate students in delivering effective integrated services to K-12 students while providing personalized instruction and support for the families.

Migration in Mexico

studied through biodiversity lens

Dan Klooster, Professor, Environmental Studies

12 Our House 2014 | Redlands.edu/OurHouse

Dan Klooster’s research examines sustainable community development strategies in Latin America, especially community forestry and forest certification. Most recently he has applied his unique lens of research on Mexico, a mega-biodiverse country, a center of agricultural domestication, and a country where indigenous communities control more than 10% of the national land area. Klooster’s research examines the changing migration strategies of indigenous Mexicans, and the environmental implications of migration in their home communities. He holds a National Science Foundation grant to pursue this research, which has also supported student research and subsidized student participation on travel courses to Oaxaca. Klooster has been awarded a Fulbright grant that will allow him to return to Mexico in 2015 for interviews with members of forest-owning communities where migration is common.

Study traces development of

post-Cold War political party in Germany

In addition to his role as Associate Professor and Chair of Government, Dr. Steve Wuhs serves as Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung, hosted by Technische Universität-Dresden, Germany. In his position as visiting researcher there, he examines the influences that historical pathways and spatial dynamics have on the organization of political parties. His work grapples specifically with territorial differences in how parties organize in newly democratized spaces, focusing in particular on state and local variation in the development of the Christian Democratic Union (Germany’s governing party) in post-socialist East Germany.

Our

House 2014

Dr. Art Svenson, David Boies Professor of Government, delivers his “Our House” speech at the Inauguration ceremony of Ralph W. Kuncl in February 2013.

Dr. Art Svenson, beloved professor of three decades at the University of Redlands, has in the past coined the phrase “professors’ paradise” to describe how he feels about spending his days with students “who are as interested in what I do as I am.” An inspired advocate of the University and the community he champions, our David Boies Professor of Government created a “forever moment” in February 2013 with his impassioned rendition of a speech he themed “Our House”—the very, very, very fine kind*—as the featured faculty speaker at the inauguration ceremony of the University’s new president, Ralph W. Kuncl. Using a beat-poet spoken-word style, and bedecked in a silk sapphire-blue jacket from China, Dr. Svenson captured the essence of Our House in his spirited performance that epitomizes the collective joy, wisdom, innovation, and charm of the University of Redlands culture at its heart. Through the pages of this booklet, we welcome you to Our House, the second edition of an annual celebration of the scholarly and creative accomplishments of our faculty and staff that sets the stage for volumes and stories to come. *Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, 1970
