SUSTAINABILITY AT SALFORD Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing society. As one of the largest organisations in Greater Manchester, with over 20,000 students and 2,500 staff across 27 buildings and around 70 hectares, we are aware of our impact on local, national and international environments. In the 2021 REF results, 78% of research at Salford was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. With research into Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences regarded as 100% outstanding or having very considerable impact. Our vision is that by embedding sustainability in all aspects of university life, we will enable our University community to have a great place to study, live, work and relax, all whilst ensuring we are managing our social and environmental impact.

We’re a silver accredited hedgehog friendly campus. We work hard to ensure our campuses are places where hedgehogs can safely live and thrive!

Our living lab, located on our Peel Park campus, is home to the living green wall. Consisting of four different planted sections that include biodiversity, seasonal, pollinator, edible – this mass of plant life and soil helps utilise excess rainwater from across the University and attract more biodiversity to the campus.

ENERGY HOUSE LABS Salford’s Energy House is a unique research and testing laboratory which comprises an early 20th century two-bedroom terrace house within an environmental chamber. Over the last ten years, research here has led to important changes in the way that UK housing becomes more energy efficient. In February 2022, we opened Energy House 2.0. This unique facility with two environmental chambers, each able to accommodate two detached houses under controlled conditions, will play a key role in accelerating the progress towards low carbon and net zero housing design.

PEEL PARK Situated right on our doorstep sits the green haven of Peel Park, which is a perfect escape from city life. Bringing tranquility to our campus, Peel Park is perfect for a summer picnic, early morning jog or leisurely stroll to clear your head in between lectures.

SUPPORT FOR CARERS One in ten of us has caring responsibilities, so if you’re caring for someone whilst studying, we recognise that juggling all of this can be very difficult. ACCESS TO CAMPUS, CURRICULUM, TEACHING We embrace diversity through our Inclusive and Accessible Teaching and Learning Framework, which reflects our commitment to ensuring our teaching and assessments meet the needs of all of our students. If you experience a disability, medical condition, or specific learning difficulty (for example dyslexia), we strongly recommend that you contact us as soon as you have confirmation that you’ll be joining us. This way, you can start off your time here well prepared, by ensuring that we are aware of your support requirements.

MONEY There’s lots of support available to help you with your studies including university support schemes, bursaries, and additional government financial support. See page 49 for more information.

SALFORD STUDENTS' UNION

Salford is a tolerant, diverse community where students of all faiths, religions, beliefs - and none - are welcomed. We are proud of our dedicated Faith Centre on Peel Park campus which offers chaplaincy services, a Chapel, Muslim Prayer Hall, and Kosher kitchen as well as spaces for reflection, discussion, learning, socialising, and celebration. As well as our Faith Centre, we also have other facilities across campus which meet the faith requirements of our University community. These are open between 08:30-21:30, Monday to Friday and exclusively for student and staff use. At Salford, we believe in providing a supportive environment in which all students and staff of any belief system or religious, philosophical, and cultural background can explore new ideas and experiences. We also play host to regular events and activities for both faith and non-faith groups.

We can advise on visa issues, working whilst in the UK, help with English and more. Scan to learn what life is like in Salford and Manchester as an international student.

CARE EXPERIENCE AND ESTRANGED STUDENTS We know that many of our students do not have the support of their families at university and that this can create barriers to success. We have some of the very best and awardwinning support in place for both care leavers and care experienced students (for example, if you have been in foster care or a residential unit) and for estranged students (students who have little, no, or a negative relationship with both parents).

We work nationally with organisations such as the National Network for the Education of Care Leavers and Stand Alone to support students, whether that be financial help and applying for student loans, accommodation and homelessness, emotional support or working with your local authority or support worker to ensure your success at university.

Azeem Amir, has been blind since birth; he has no sight in his right eye but light perception in his left, and he admits his opportunities were limited growing up. That hasn’t stopped him though, with Azeem following his passions to play football from a grassroots level to becoming a member of the England squad, all in just a few years. While studying on his degree BSc Business Management with Sport at Salford, he took part in the Launch programme with his business Learn with ESS. Learn with ESS is an initiative that uses education, sport and speaking (ESS) based activities to provide a unique and interactive team building experience whilst addressing stigmatised issues surrounding disability. Learn with ESS aims to change and reshape perceptions within society towards a more unified and inclusive future for all. Azeem represented the University of Salford in 2020 at Santander’s first ever Santander Emerging Entrepreneurs event, competing with 82 other startups for grant funding on their Santander Universities business programme. ADVICE AND WELLBEING

We ensure that your voice is heard at the University and beyond, all the way from Salford to a national level. When we say we are run by students for students, we mean it. TRANSFORMING PRODUCTS AND IMPROVING PRACTICE IN HUMAN MOVEMENT AND REHABILITATION

59

Salford’s Human Movement and Rehabilitation team works with industry across the globe to improve the lives of people with mobility problems. This ranges from people who have difficulty walking and rely on gait analysis to inform diagnosis and treatment, to the millions of workers who stand for long periods at work and suffer musculoskeletal pain and to the survivors of stroke, for whom regaining limb movement is key to their daily activities. In addressing these issues, Salford’s research led to the first major update to clinical gait analysis methods in 40 years. Impacting the work of 1,000 clinical laboratories worldwide, some 80% of the global sector; our research challenged the occupational footwear sector’s focus on accident prevention, redirecting it toward footwear to protect musculoskeletal health. This resulted in a new company, strategy and products (>60,000 sold) and the production of a patented rehabilitation technology that provides high quality, physical therapy without the need for highly skilled staff; resulting in a spin-out company in China, investment of £2,000,000 and 1,350 patients benefiting in its first 18 months.

MAINSTREAMING URBAN AGRICULTURE: BRINGING THE BENEFITS OF FOOD GROWING TO CITIES

Choose from a traditional PhD, a professional doctorate, PhD by published works, MPhil or MRes. You can study full-time, part-time, online or splitsite (studying at the University and in another country). You may also have the opportunity to spend part of your research time studying abroad. If you would like to speak to an academic about a project or to learn more visit salford.ac.uk/postgraduate-research

Our research has also highlighted the value of the concept in decision-making processes and supported policy change to enable wider-scale application of the practice. In doing so, we have directly enabled £2,500,000 in funding for the practice so far and secured government commitment for a further £8,000,000 to mainstream the concept in the UK. Salford’s research has been instrumental in creating jobs, shaping environments, influencing policy and effecting behaviour change, which has enabled the Urban Agriculture concept to flourish at scale.

RESEARCH

POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH QUALIFICATIONS

Urban Agriculture, the practice of cultivating and producing food in cities, is growing in importance in terms of sustainability. The practice offers substantial social, economic and environmental benefits for communities, such as job creation, improving mental health and greening neighbourhoods. However, there is a knowledge gap regarding sustainable models, models for upscaling and best practices to implement Urban Agriculture. Researchers at Salford have pioneered the implementation of upscaled Urban Agriculture, leading to creation of the largest urban farm in the UK and a wide range of other assets.

MEET AMBER Meet Amber Haque, an MA Journalism graduate and lead journalist on BBC docuseries, Hometown.

She has recently been working on the second series of BBC Hometown, a programme that follows journalists exploring tragic events from their hometowns. Throughout the series, Amber investigates knife crime around Manchester, and explores allegations of bias and injustice in Manchester’s deprived neighbourhoods. “It’s been a very interesting, personal, emotional journey taking me back to a lot of places where I have grown up.” “I think the opportunity to have done things like Quays News for example, and make packages gave me the opportunity to make mistakes and just get out there.” Quays News is one of the University's broadcasting channels, that allows students to put together their own news programmes while on the course.

“I tried everything when I was on Quays News, I filmed, edited, reported, found stories and it just set me up well on how to story tell.” It was not only the opportunities available on the course but the lecturers and tutors that helped Amber toward her career: “All of them created an environment where we worked as a team and helped each other and it was just an ideas place, which I think has never left me. “I definitely learnt and got the first start from Salford, one hundred percent.” To find out more about the School of Arts, Media and Creative Technology, visit salford.ac.uk/salford-school-of-arts-mediaand-creative-technology Or to take a look at our courses please visit salford.ac.uk/courses

MEET ANNA Meet Anna Ilieva, an MSc Digital Marketing student at Salford Business School.

One of the great things about Salford Business School is the many established relationships with industry and students have the opportunity to get involved in job schemes, work placements and gain hands-on experience. But the best bit has the friends I have made. I was wondering who I might meet on the course, but I was lucky enough to become friends with a few amazing people and great professionals. Many of the people on my course are professionals who have worked for a few years in the marketing industry. This is very beneficial for me because they've been able to share their experiences. I would advise anyone who is considering studying this course to stop hesitating and apply. It's a great asset to your professional career and will teach you the foundations, plus fundamental knowledge, about various subjects. You will also get the chance to become a part of a great community. Large enough to matter, but small enough to care. MEET MOHANNED Mohanned Huffi studied MSc Performance Analysis in Sports and credits the course as helping him secure his career in semi-professional football.

When I was evaluating where I would be studying, the course at the University of Salford stood out. The staff are highly experienced industry professionals and wellrespected for their scientific contributions to sport. The access to sports science labs and instruments was the biggest highlight for me as this is otherwise not accessible except in sports organisations. The 24-hour library with a wide range of industry-specific books and learning materials is also great for students. The campus is lively and there are many societies that are super active in organising interesting events and student activities. On the course there was a very good mix of theoretical discussions, practical use of analysis, sports science equipment and seminars from industry professionals as guest speakers. As part of the course, you undertake a placement and mine was the role of an analyst at a professional football club. The lecturers on the course are well-connected to sports

organisations and offered to help with securing placements, and although this was not an official offering from the University, it made me feel like they were really invested in my development. To secure a professional full-time position within football as a Coach, the course gave me tangible and practical tools to help me in my field. A major part of coaching is the evaluation of performance and along with the sport science module, the course prepared me well for the professional requirements and practices as an athlete developer. For anyone thinking of studying this course at Salford, I would say go for it! The staff are excellent, the labs replicate those used in professional settings and the campus is beautiful. MEET EMMA I am a 34 year old mature, deaf and disabled student. I was always told that I would never amount to anything when I was at school due to being deaf but I never let this stop me from achieving my goals. I am passionate about inclusivity and every single student feeling like they belong regardless of their background, race or disability. I have always been a huge fan of Sir David Attenborough right from a young age and as I got older I started to realise more about the environment and the climate change crisis and I really wanted to learn about what I could do to help. This led me to look into geography degrees. I really enjoyed my undergraduate degree and I learnt so much, this then led me to want to study more and in a more focused area so I decided to study my Masters in Sustainability. The course has really shaped my understanding of the real challenges we are facing in terms of climate change and has heightened my passion even more for sustainability and the future. The course has also given me opportunities to work on real life projects such as beekeeping programmes and flood defences. I have worked with the Environment Agency, RHS Bridgewater, Northern Roots and many more.

During my time at Salford I have been heavily involved in the Students Union. Over the last 4 years of university I have been a Course Representative, a School Representative, a Student Trustee and was also elected as the Voluntary Disability Officer from 2022-2023. These roles have given me extensive insight into the student life and what the students of Salford want to see change. I won School Representative of the Year 2 years running and an award for going above and beyond in 2022. I have also just recently won the Best Liberation Campaigner award too. These awards and achievements just show that no matter what your background or disability that anything is possible. The support I have received during my time at Salford has been truly outstanding. Salford is the first place I have ever felt like I belong, and I truly feel a part of something special.
