Here’s what you’ll be learning in your first year (but just so you know, module content may change from time to time to keep what you’re learning fresh and up to date). / CRITICAL AND TEXTUAL STUDIES Examines key texts and critical approaches central to live performance and media disciplines from the perspective of particular analytical approaches, e.g. semiotics, ideological approaches and structuralism.
/ PRODUCTION SKILLS The module combines both technical and creative aspects of media production as you develop a broad awareness of the range of skills required for video production, including camera, lighting, editing and sound – imperative to contemporary theatre technology.
/ INTRODUCTION TO LIGHTING, SOUND AND DIGITAL PERFORMANCE In this module, you will learn to the broad technical skills required to design and operate digital lighting and sound systems for theatre.
/ INTRODUCTION TO DESIGN You will learn the concepts behind design for theatre, via lectures, practical tutorials and workshops. Scripts will be studied from the perspective of technical and spatial design.
/ STAGECRAFT This module is to introduce core concepts behind rear of house management and operation. Seminars will explore the structure and institutions of the UK theatre industry and the creative processes involved in producing and mounting a theatrical performance. Workshops will inform and develop practical skills of basic stage management and construction skills for rehearsal and performance.
/ PERFORMANCE IN CONTEXT Provides the historical framework to examine the development of performance from the late 19th century onward.

/ JOIN A COMMUNITY As well as Technical Theatre, we offer courses in Theatre and Performance Practice, Comedy Writing and Performance, and Media and Performance. That means you’ll have opportunities to collaborate on projects with more than 400 students with a range of skills, as well as those working on Art and Design subjects too.
/ INDUSTRY-STANDARD FACILITIES This course is based in our £55 million New Adelphi building. It houses a 350-seat theatre with industry-standard lighting and staging equipment, and you’ll also have access to the software and systems you’ll use when you enter the world of work.
/ UNRIVALLED OPPORTUNITIES When you’ve graduated, you’ll be well placed to secure a job in the theatre/live events industries for in different aspects of lighting, sound and digital operations. Junior camera, sound recording, and editing roles (in media organisations) would also be within your scope, as we also teach media production skills on this course. You’ll also learn a range of transferable skills applicable to other industries, such as advertising, public relations, digital media, marketing, education, and the entertainment industry.
