BE UNEXPECTED POSTGRADUATE OPEN DAY WED 28 NOV 2018

VICE-CHANCELLOR’S WELCOME TO YOUR POSTGRADUATE OPEN DAY Your Open Day is designed to provide you with all the information you need to make an informed choice about the many taught and research opportunities available to you at the University of Salford. In a fiercely competitive job market, a postgraduate qualification from Salford will give you the edge over rival job applicants. Our courses are designed to equip you for the challenges of the working world. They can open doors to rewarding and challenging careers in health, science, engineering, the arts, the built environment, media, music, law and business. As a postgraduate student at Salford you’ll experience cutting-edge academic facilities, close proximity to central Manchester and over 2,400 affordable student rooms within walking distance of our main campus.

Thousands of postgraduate students from the University have gone onto career success. Previous students are now working at leading organisations across the world including Apple, Saatchi & Saatchi, Kellogg’s, the NHS, GlaxoSmithKline and the Financial Times, to name just a few. We also continue to boast exceptional links with organisations across both the public and private sector, both here in the UK and overseas. Salford is a research-driven university, using innovation and creativity to find solutions to ‘real-world’ problems. Our multi-disciplinary research environment is recognised nationally and around the world. Our research is organised through four strategic interdisciplinary themes; Built Environment; Energy; Health and Wellbeing; Media, Digital Technology and the Creative Economy. Academic staff and students will be available throughout the event to answer any questions you might have. I hope you enjoy your visit to the University of Salford. rofessor Helen Marshall P Vice-Chancellor

MEDIACITYUK CAMPUS MediaCityUK has become a genuine, creative community, where collaborative relationships can grow and flourish. It’s a concept reflecting the way the media industry is moving, as the boundaries between ‘new’ and ‘old’ media become increasingly blurred. This is a brave new world which will require talented people from different disciplines to work together MediaCityUK is a place where this can happen. We are currently the only University to have a presence at MediaCityUK, with a space designed to encourage creativity, innovation and collaboration between academics, students, professionals and industry. Our MediaCityUK campus is located at the heart of six national BBC departments and a mass of independent specialist creative, digital and media organisations. The location, stateof-the-art facilities and our focus on industrial partnerships give our 1,500 MediaCityUK students exceptional opportunities, placing them in prime position for digital and media careers. / Our production suites, studios and digital infrastructure have been informed and specified by industry and future proofed for emerging creative technologies. / Our close partnerships with major businesses such as BT and Adobe will inform the development of our courses and research projects – keeping our focus constantly up to date with the real world. / Our aim is to have our students working on live briefs (assigned by our business partners) on all MediaCityUK courses. These will be used as a key aspect of our teaching and preparing our students to be professional.

OUT AND ABOUT –

IN THE CITY

We’re Salford and proud, but there’s no denying that our next door neighbour is one of the most exciting cities in the world. Here are our top five reasons to love Manchester.

1. FOOD Manchester is one of the best places in the country for dining out. There’s food from almost every country in the world, from fine dining to street food. Spinningfields is a great place to have a glass of wine while doing some celeb spotting. You’ll find burgers galore in the Northern Quarter along with a huge selection of craft ales to wash them down. The Grade II listed Corn Exchange houses 13 restaurants under one roof. Meanwhile, The Printworks has everything you need for a great night out, including restaurants, bars and clubs.

2. MUSIC AND NIGHTLIFE Manchester is famous for its music scene and the lively, energetic buzz shows no sign of abating. The Warehouse Project attracts clubbers from all over the world, and Manchester’s popular festival Parklife (from the people behind the Warehouse Project), is held each summer in Manchester’s Heaton Park. Every May, Salford’s Sounds from the Other City festival is held in locations just a short walk away from our main campus.

3. SHOPPING Food or fashion, bargain or designer, organic or value: it’s all here. Hop on the 100 bus from outside the University and it will take you straight to the Trafford Centre, the second largest shopping mall in the UK with a cinema, bowling and restaurants all open until late. Student favourite Afflecks has dozens of independent shops and stalls selling original, vintage and handmade goods. Manchester’s Arndale is just two kilometres away from campus, and has hundreds of international brands, plus lots of student focused events and discounts, all under one roof.

4. SPORT Not only is Manchester home to one of the most famous football teams in the world, Manchester United, and its rival, Manchester City, it hosts international cricket matches at Lancashire County Cricket Club, world cycling competitions at the Manchester Velodrome, and international swimming events at the Aquatics Centre. And if playing sport is your thing, you’ve got plenty to choose from, including the Power League which has 14 all-weather pitches. You can ski all year round at Chill Factore, or you can even take part in open water swim sessions in the Manchester Ship Canal from April to September. And we’ve got our very own sports centre right here on campus, complete with a gym, swimming pool, sauna, climbing wall, courts and pitches.

5. CULTURE Manchester’s reputation for producing world-famous musicians places it centre stage in the world of culture. But it’s not all about Oasis and The Smiths; from the diversity of Manchester International Festival (MIF) to live music venues such as The Bridgewater Hall and The Deaf Institute, there really is something for everyone. Need a break from the noise and excitement? There are many excellent art galleries, museums, theatres and libraries. Visit contemporary and classic exhibitions at Salford Museum and Art Gallery, or take in a film or theatre experience at the multi-artform centre, HOME. With its rich literary legacy, Manchester is home to some of the best libraries including Manchester Central Library and Chetham’s, the oldest public library in the English-speaking world.
