My name is Kaya, a second-year student studying BSc (Hons) Nutrition and Exercise as Medicine. A typical week includes studying a number of different modules, some of which are theory and some practical and they have a range of different assessment methods including essays, stimulated interviews, phase tests and practical assessments.

MEET KAYA

MONDAY

10AM: BEHAVIOUR CHANGE TECHNIQUES

Throughout the semester we have discussed 93 different behaviour change techniques and different behaviour models as part of the Healthy Behaviour and Promoting Change module. We have learnt to use different techniques when working with people with different goals, personal situations and health conditions. Recently, we had a graduate of the programme come in and deliver some content aligned with a psychology-based questionnaire she devised during her postgraduate study to assess mental health.

TUESDAY

9AM: APPLIED NUTRITION AND DIETARY ANALYSIS

During this module, we have been asked to record a three-day food diary and use a piece of software called Nutritics to analyse and identify where any improvements can be made and to highlight any deficiencies that we may have.

One lesson that particularly interested me was about Glycaemic index and Glycaemic load. This involved three students volunteering to each have a different drink and have their blood glucose monitored, using a finger prick test, throughout the lesson. We then analysed the findings afterwards.

1PM: WORKPLACE AND CORPORATE HEALTH AND WELLBEING

On a Tuesday afternoon, I attend sessions on promoting health and wellbeing interventions within the workplace, and particularly those that have low levels of activity. By the end of the semester, I will have researched what interventions have been used within literature to make the workplace a healthier environment. I have investigated the activity levels of administration staff at the University and made recommendations on how they could increase these levels throughout the day.

WEDNESDAY

INDEPENDENT STUDY

Wednesday is one of my days off from university. I utilise my time well by working on my essays week by week. I also use this time to complete any reading and to run over any lesson content that I may have found difficult from the past week.

THURSDAY

10AM: ADVANCED EXERCISE PRESCRIPTION

In the first year, we took a module called Fundamental Exercise Prescription, where we gained our Level 2 Gym Instructing qualification. This year we're building on this and we are working towards achieving our Level 2 Personal Training qualification.

In the morning we have a lecture to advance our knowledge surrounding training techniques. These training techniques can be used on anybody from recreational users to elite athletes. In the afternoon, we have a practical session which is either in the exercise lab or in the sports hall. This has allowed me to apply my knowledge in a practical setting and we are taught to relay highly scientific information to the layperson. One of the students from my class volunteered to perform a VO2 max test, which is a gold standard test to assess cardiovascular fitness. We later analysed his results against nominal data and assessed how much his heart rate and breathing rate increased throughout the test.

FRIDAY

REVISION

Friday is another day free of lectures. On Friday, I either work my part-time job as a care support worker or use this time to progress my assignments and revise the content in preparation for any exams or quizzes that my lecturers have set for us.

In my final year, I will be using one of the lecture-free days to undertake a nine month placement in an area of my choice and I am really looking forward to that.

The facilities we have access to are brilliant and allow us to create highly accurate models down to the smallest of details.

SUSTAINABILITY AT SALFORD

Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing society. As one of the largest organisations in Greater Manchester, with over 20,000 students and 2,500 staff across 27 buildings and around 70 hectares, we are aware of our impact on local, national and international environments.

In the 2021 REF results, 78% of research at Salford was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. With research into Earth Systems and Environmental Sciences regarded as 100% outstanding or having very considerable impact.

Our vision is that by embedding sustainability in all aspects of university life, we will enable our University community to have a great place to study, live, work and relax, all whilst ensuring we are managing our social and environmental impact.

We’re a silver accredited hedgehog friendly campus. We work hard to ensure our campuses are places where hedgehogs can safely live and thrive!

IGNITION GREEN WALL

Our living lab, located on our Peel Park campus, is home to the living green wall. Consisting of four different planted sections that include biodiversity, seasonal, pollinator, edible – this mass of plant life and soil helps utilise excess rainwater from across the University and attract more biodiversity to the campus.

ENERGY HOUSE LABS

Salford’s Energy House is a unique research and testing laboratory which comprises an early 20th century two-bedroom terrace house within an environmental chamber. Over the last ten years, research here has led to important changes in the way that UK housing becomes more energy efficient.

In February 2022, we opened Energy House 2.0. This unique facility with two environmental chambers, each able to accommodate two detached houses under controlled conditions, will play a key role in accelerating the progress towards low carbon and net zero housing design.

In 2022, the University ranked 9th out of 153 UK institutions and received a First-Class award in the People and Planet’s University League. Salford was named as one of the UK’s most sustainable universities based on criteria including energy sources and waste to sustainable food and education for sustainable development.

GREEN FLAG AWARD WINNERS 2022

For the fourth year running, Salford received the prestigious Green Flag award, with our campus having been recognised and rewarded for being a well-managed outdoor green space.

Our aim is to have a green and welcoming campus which supports students in their journey at university.

COMMUNITY GROWING SPACE

With our local community and students’ wellbeing in mind, we recently launched a Community Growing Space on campus. Located behind Clifford Whitworth Library, and with beautiful views of Peel Park, in this new space you’ll find planters filled with herbs and flowers, resting spots for meditation and outdoor meetings, a birdhouse and bird feeding station.

OUR PARTNERSHIPS

We have unique partnerships with Sale Sharks Rugby Union Club and Salford Red Devils Rugby League clubs, with their staff studying MSc and PhD courses in our School of Health and Society and the Salford Business School. A key benefit of these partnerships is the opportunity for our students to undertake professional placements in these high performance organisations.

We play a key part in pre and post season testing and management of the players alongside their medical and scientific staff, using our advanced research and testing facilities.

39

My name is Alia, a third year BSc (Hons) Human Biology and Infectious Diseases student and President of the Biomed Society.

I originally wanted to go into a career in dental hygiene and therapy, but when I had a look at the course specification at another university, I didn’t really feel that it was me and declined the offer. I ended up applying for this course through Clearing. The lecturer I spoke to on the phone was so enthusiastic about the course and the title really called out to me. Now I’m here studying Human Biology and Infectious Diseases.

MEET ALIA

MONDAY

10AM:

GETTING TO UNI

I’m from Bolton, so I commute to university by local bus and train. It takes between 30 minutes and an hour, depending on what time my lectures are.

11AM: LECTURE

I usually have one lecture a week, where I’m in a bigger lecture hall with my coursemates. The rest of my week is split between tutorials, lab work and independent study time.

Learn more about biomedical and chemical sciences at explore.salford.ac.uk

TUESDAY

10AM: LABS

As I’m in my final year, I book my own time in the labs to work on my final year project, which is focused on the effects of chemotherapy on lung cells. I'm generally in there a few times a week for around two or three hours, but it really varies depending on the practical.

Doing summer placements in research labs between my second and third year has really helped me in the lab now, because I’m very aware of what I need to do for my own project.

2PM:

STUDY ON CAMPUS

I like to stay on campus to look over my lecture notes or reply to my Biomed Society emails. I’m absolutely obsessed with the new SEE (School of Science, Engineering and Environment) building, so you’ll either find me there, or in the library.

WEDNESDAY

11AM: TUTORIAL

I have a tutorial in a small group every Wednesday. In first and second year it was more about discussing the things we’ve been learning in class, general life skills and employability. But in our third year, we usually give updates on our final year projects.

This week we’re swapping introductions and giving each other some feedback and advice on what we could do better. This where our peer support really comes in and we help each other out.

2PM:

CAREERS TALK

There are several career groups, which are linked to the Biomed Society. I’m part of the Research Career Working group, as I think that’s the area I’d like to go into when I graduate. With the help of our lecturers, we organise talks and sessions helping students to work on their CVs, interview techniques and all kinds of things. This week we’re having a talk on the importance of patient care for lab scientists.

THURSDAY

11AM:

COFFEE

I’m catching up with a coursemate over a cup of coffee, as we’re in different tutorial groups now. I usually go to either the café inside Salford Museum, Subway inside the Maxwell Building if I'm hungry or Costa if I just want to grab a hot drink.

5PM:

WORK

I work as a teacher at my local mosque from 5-7pm, five days a week, which I balance with my uni work. I think it’s helped me in terms of communication skills, and I’ve really enjoyed it as a way of taking downtime from university life. I like being able to be a role model for the younger girls and talk to them about their aspirations or even just daily life.

EVENING DOWNTIME

I'm a bit of a K-drama addict, so I like to watch an episode to really wind down at the end of the day.

FRIDAY

6PM:

BOWLING SOCIAL

We organise lots of social events for the Biomed Society. Around 20 of us are going bowling this week at the Printworks in Manchester. We also have a regular book club and we’re hoping to organise a trip to London to the theatre, an escape room event, and a board games night.

Your university days can be the most exciting time of your life, but they can also be challenging.

Whatever your personal circumstances, we want to make your Salford experience a positive one. Our friendly and experienced support teams are here to provide practical advice and emotional support throughout your time at university.

We run a number of different events throughout the course of the academic year that are aimed specifically at encouraging students to engage with the many support services.

51 STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES

ANY QUESTIONS, JUST ASK

University can be a big place, which is why our dedicated, specialist support service, askUS is on hand to offer support and guidance on all things outside of your studies. Whether it’s face to face, over email, by phone or through live chat, they can help with a wide range of issues to help make sure you’re having the best university experience as possible.

Wellbeing, learning, finance - whatever’s on your mind, just askUS!

Find out more about all our support services at salford.ac.uk/student-support-services

DISABILITY INCLUSION SERVICE

Our Disability Inclusion Advisers are here to help support you with any barriers you face when accessing the campus, its facilities, your accommodation, or studies. This includes exam arrangements, emergency evacuation plans and field trip support. We assist students with specific learning difficulties, long-term medical conditions, mental health difficulties, physical or sensory impairments, mobility difficulties or temporary injuries.

COUNSELLING, WELLBEING AND MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT

If you don’t feel comfortable talking about a problem or worry with friends, family or your tutor, it can sometimes be easier to speak to someone you don’t know. Our Wellbeing Advisers provide a confidential, non-judgmental space where you feel listened to. They will help explore solutions for any emotional problems you may be experiencing.

If a student needs to speak to the Disability team, I'm the first point of contact. If they need to speak to care leavers or estrangement, it will all come through the askUS advisers first.

We also offer a counselling service that provides talking therapy and can help you on your personal journey to understanding your issues.

SANCTUARY SEEKERS

As an Article 26 University we believe access to higher education should be based on ability alone. Asylum seekers and students with limited leave to remain cannot access student finance, so we offer a limited number of Article 26 scholarships for these students each year. Additionally, we offer specialist advice and guidance to both sanctuary seekers and refugees who are thinking of how they can access university or choose Salford to study.

ACCESS TO CAMPUS, CURRICULUM, TEACHING

I've always had a passion, all my working life, around equality and inclusion, so seeing that happen at a place like a university is fantastic.

SUPPORT FOR CARERS

One in ten of us has caring responsibilities, so if you’re caring for someone whilst studying, we recognise that juggling all of this can be very difficult. Our student advisers and a student care coordinator can meet with you and write a support plan to help you with your time at university. We are currently one of only two universities that offer this to student carers.

We can also put you in touch with local and national organisations that provide practical and emotional support.

We embrace diversity through our Inclusive and Accessible Teaching and Learning Framework, which reflects our commitment to ensuring our teaching and assessments meet the needs of all of our students. If you experience a disability, medical condition, or specific learning difficulty (for example dyslexia), we strongly recommend that you contact us as soon as you have confirmation that you’ll be joining us. This way, you can start off your time here well prepared, by ensuring that we are aware of your support requirements.

MONEY

Living independently and having to budget for the first time can be a real learning curve, but there are steps you can take to make sure you manage your money to make it go further. There’s lots of help available to help you with your studies including University support schemes, bursaries, and additional government financial support. See page 70 for more information.

SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS WITH CHILDREN

Starting a degree whilst looking after young children can be challenging, but there is a wealth of services available to you at Salford to allow you to achieve your learning goals. Busy Bees nursery, located on our Frederick Road campus, is open 8.00am – 6.00pm every weekday, offering places for babies and children aged three months to five years old (the nursery is independent from the University, places must be pre-booked and are subject to availability). Help with childcare costs is available to students. Visit gov.uk/childcare-grant for details and to check your eligibility.

We also have support for pregnant students and those juggling family and student life.

ARMED FORCES

We understand that Veterans, or students whose parent(s), carer(s), or partner are current or former UK Armed Forces personnel may find there are unique circumstances to consider when thinking about studying at a university. That’s why we offer extra support and have a dedicated Armed Forces Lead who can help you on your journey to further study at the University of Salford.

LGBTQIA+

Manchester is one of the best queer cities in the UK and at Salford it’s on your doorstep. The Salford Trans Forum is a group that meets regularly to provide students with opportunities to continue to make Salford trans and non-binary friendly. We are also a Stonewall Diversity Champion and are working towards being one of the first trans and non-binary friendly universities in the UK. We have staff who can help support your transition at university if you need it.

You will have opportunities to be involved in events like Manchester and Salford Pride and Trans Days of Visibility and Remembrance. Salford is a great place to be out and proud!

For more information about our range of support services, visit salford.ac.uk/ student-support-services

If you want more in depth knowledge about how to annotate, or create bibliographies - we have an academic support team. They’ll go through bibliographies, referencing, how to use library search and teach you how to write essays.

LIBRARY SUPPORT

We know that university can be a big step on from school or college, and sometimes it may feel like you should know straight away how to use journals and reference your assignments. We’re here to help new students with researching, referencing, and reading lists. We also run Wordscope and Mathscope programmes, to help you overcome any common writing or mathematical problems, as well as IT skills and resource workshops.

FAITH

Salford is a tolerant, diverse community where students of all faiths, religions, beliefs - and none - are welcomed. We are proud of our dedicated Faith Centre on Peel Park campus which offers chaplaincy services, a Chapel, Muslim Prayer Hall, and Kosher kitchen as well as spaces for reflection, discussion, learning, socialising, and celebration.

As well as our Faith Centre, we also have other facilities across campus which meet the faith requirements of our University community. These are open between 08:30-21:30, Monday to Friday and exclusively for student and staff use.

At Salford, we believe in providing a supportive environment in which all students and staff of any belief system or religious, philosophical, and cultural background can explore new ideas and experiences. We also play host to regular events and activities for both faith and non-faith groups.

CARE EXPERIENCE AND ESTRANGED STUDENTS

We know that many of our students do not have the support of their families at university and that this can create barriers to success. We have some of the very best and awardwinning support in place for both care leavers and care experienced students (for example, if you have been in foster care or a residential unit) and for estranged students (students who have little, no, or a negative relationship with both parents).

STUDENT PROGRESSION ADMINISTRATORS

Each of the four academic schools at Salford have a dedicated support team of Student Progression Administrations (SPAs), who can help with anything, and everything related to your studies. SPAs can also help with exam results, reviewing your year-on-year progression, advice and guidance on academic regulations and any personal mitigating circumstances you may experience.

SALFORD STUDENTS' UNION

Throughout your time at Salford, we're here to offer impartial and non-judgemental advice and help when you need it. From housing to health and wellbeing, mental health to academic appeals, the SU advice centre can help you seek support with a number of issues. See page 67 for more information.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

The University of Salford is a truly global institution, with over 3,000 international students from over 85 countries, creating a vibrant and multi-cultural atmosphere on campus.

We have a range of support services available to you as an international student, to help you settle in and make the most of your time at Salford. We can advise on visa issues, working whilst in the UK, help with English and more.

INDUSTRY IS AT THE HEART OF EVERYTHING WE DO

We partner with businesses and organisations from all sectors, working hand-in-hand to develop courses that are up-to-date and relevant to today’s challenges.

Our academic staff are professionals in their fields, with many actively engaging with industry to continuously update their knowledge and inform their teaching. From internships to employment opportunities, guest speakers to practical, hands-on workshops and lectures; we provide our students with the skills necessary to succeed both academically and in working life beyond graduation.

My job is to work very closely with our academic staff to help build employability and career support into the curriculum. So that as students are going through their courses, they're also learning about how the skills and knowledge they're building, is going to help them take their next steps after university.

A degree from the University of Salford is more than just a certificate – we’ll help you graduate with confidence, ready to step into your chosen career.

I worked as an intern within the in-house legal team at Viacom Media Networks, a multinational TV and media company. My day to day duties included drafting a wide range of consumer products contracts as well as dealing with counterfeit and trademark-related issues.

I could not have asked for a better placement experience, it truly allowed me to grow as a person and I saw a huge increase in my confidence. Working in a legal team for such a large company was incredibly fast-paced which meant I had to pick things up quickly and be very organised. These are all skills that I carried forward into my final year and I saw such an improvement in my grades.

57 CAREERS AND EMPLOYABILITY

WORK EXPERIENCE

We use our partnerships and staff networks to create opportunities for you to gain real, hands-on experience that will help you to develop the professional and personal skills that employers value.

The majority of our courses offer work placements. Many courses also offer a year in industry, giving you the chance to work full-time for an employer. You’ll be paid for your work and you won’t have to pay any tuition fees for the year.

WE’RE WITH YOU ALL THE WAY

You can access our professional, on-campus and online employability services even after you graduate.

We can help you to create the perfect job applications, LinkedIn pages, as well as offering personalised career advice and helping you with your employability skills. Find out more at salford.ac.uk/employability-skills

We also have online resources to help with your CVs and Interview techniques through ‘Careerset’ and ‘Shortlist Me’. Visit salford.ac.uk/careers to find out more.

I wanted to gain more experience and expand on what I’ve learnt during my studies to ensure that once I finish my degree, I'll be as prepared as possible to join the financial and accounting sector. I went ahead and applied, got an interview and thankfully impressed them enough to land the role! I felt ready for this placement as the University prepared me well. What we had learnt in lectures and seminars gave me a base knowledge, which I managed to expand upon during my placement.

On a day-to-day basis, I deal a lot with the NHS PE weekly files. The NHS PE is a standalone organisation that provides medical and agency staff. They send me an invoice relating to shifts worked and I sort out the cost centres, all of the data and formulas. I then send them out to the individual care organisations and then a journal to get it onto the ledger.

I love it. I enjoy the responsibility, there are deadlines weekly that I need to keep to, and I feel like I'm learning a lot.

The placement has definitely improved my soft skills such as communication and teamwork. We have meetings every morning where we communicate what we're doing and what we're up to. When there's a problem, we figure out what's wrong by working together and problem-solving. These are essential skills needed in the workplace.

Working for the NHS honestly feels more rewarding than it would any other company, just because I know I'm working for a company that saves lives. I can't think of any other company, especially in this country, that does the same thing. I know I'm not helping directly in the hospitals doing the job I do, but I know I help indirectly and that makes me feel like I've done something meaningful.

It’s been rewarding, challenging, but most importantly, really enjoyable.

In terms of support from the University, my supervisor has honestly been phenomenal. If I ever have a question, all I have to do is email him and he replies quickly.

I can't stress enough how much I'd recommend taking a placement to students. You need to go into it with the right attitude and really wanting it, but if you go in with those two things, you’ll get a lot out of it. You learn skills that you didn't know you needed to learn. You get a real grasp of the working world that you're eventually going to go into and it also gets you into a successful work habit. So yes, I'd recommend a placement 100%!

INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGES FOR STUDIES

We have partners all over the world including many in Europe and also in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, South Korea, and the USA. These are incredible opportunities to visit some fantastic places, while taking advantage of the great facilities our partner institutions offer and developing your longer-term career prospects and an understanding of how the world works.

Options depend on your course. Each subject has a dedicated Exchange Coordinator who can help you with your options. Study exchanges can be for one trimester or a full academic year and usually take place in your second year. The International Opportunities team is also here to help with any queries you have about your time overseas and, where possible, will also support you explore any funding opportunities.

WORK PLACEMENTS

If your course has a work placement included, we can discuss your options with you as these can often be completed overseas. Options depend on your course and funding, where applicable, can be provided through the Turing Scheme. Work placements are an ideal way to develop yourself personally and professionally and you get to see your subject from another perspective.

/ Toronto, Canada

More students than ever understand the importance of international experience and employers are increasingly interested in students who have global awareness.
/ Jordan, Hong Kong

INTERNATIONALISATION AT HOME

Some students, for various reasons, may not be able to take part in overseas study or work placements. The International Opportunities Team runs campus events throughout the year to help students understand the importance of a global understanding. You may also have students from other countries on your course, have an international angle in your studies or be able to take part in field trips. At Salford, we encourage you to think about internationalising your course so you can add your experiences to your CV and impress employers.

FUNDING

At Salford, we apply for funding through the UK government’s Turing Scheme each year and, where applicable, we will be able to provide funding to students on a range of programmes. The amounts depend on the destination, length of time overseas and whether you are a student from a widening participation background that is to say, students from disadvantaged backgrounds, in line with Turing Scheme provisions. At the time of writing, it is too early to confirm Turing Scheme funding options for 2025-26 (which is when first year students joining in 2024 would first have an opportunity to go overseas). Funding is not guaranteed but we will work with you to explore what support we can give you. Further information about the Turing Scheme is available at turing-scheme.org.uk

For both study and work opportunities, money needn’t be a barrier if you are considering going abroad. You continue to pay your usual tuition fees to the University, and you are still entitled to your student finance.

MEET CONNOR

Connor D’Agostino, BSc (Hons) Business Management student, tells us all about his experience studying abroad as part of his course at Salford.

When I was told that I could go and study in the United States, disbelief is an understatement. The idea of an international exchange semester or year, in a place that you see and hear about in movies and on TV shows your whole childhood, is hard to beat.

I took my exchange semester at Middle Tennessee State University. It’s located in a town called Murfreesboro, just outside Nashville, so you are right in the heart of it, but it also had a small town, laid-back American suburb vibe.

I decided to embark on an international exchange semester because from a young age, I always knew there were places in the world to experience, learn and live. I knew it would give me the chance to make some amazing memories and friends that would definitely last a lifetime. Also, due to the huge professional appeal that an international opportunity can bring, I knew it would

/ Broadway, Nashville

stand me out from the crowd when I graduate. It can also be a great conversation topic for interviews, ice breakers and allows future employers to see you are happy to go out of your comfort zone, adapt to new situations and cultures, and are able to study successfully away from home.

I gained more than I could’ve ever imagined while on my exchange. Besides the obvious benefits to my CV and broadening my academic calibre, I learnt to be a better person. An exchange makes you learn so much about yourself and I was lucky enough to live in a global learning community with students from all around the world.

To anyone undecided whether to go ahead with an international exchange semester, I’d say from experience that every person during the process feels nervous and panics, as it’s completely out of most people’s comfort zone. However, when the plane lands and you meet your housemates and professors, all you feel is

welcomed. Nerves turn to complete excitement and the memories and experiences you can make from this opportunity are like no other.

To those who feel like the studying may be overwhelming and too much while away from home, this is the complete opposite case. You have staff from Salford and your destination school who understand your situation, who can help and accommodate you in the best way possible at all times.

Hard work is required; however, the hard work is completely worth it. I feel that there is perfect balance between work and play. You have plenty of downtime to get around town, catch up with friends, explore and have endless amounts of fun with housemates while you do it.

UNIVERSITY OF SALFORD STUDENTS' UNION

FEES AND FINANCE

Our fees for students from the UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man studying a full-time undergraduate degree are £9,250* per year for the first year of study.

Fees for UK part-time students will vary depending on the number of credits taken per year. Financial support is available to undergraduate students to help with the cost of university.

Tuition fee loans, available for students from the UK, are paid directly to the University each term and you don’t need to pay anything upfront. If you’re studying full-time, you’ll receive a maximum of £9,250 per year, depending on the course and if you’re a part-time student, you’ll receive a maximum of £6,935*.

A maintenance loan for living costs is also available to support undergraduate students from the UK. The maximum amount that you may receive depends on a number of things, including where you are from in the UK, your household income, your course, where you will live while you are studying and your individual circumstances. Loans for living costs are paid directly into your bank account each term.

There’s also other additional government support available to help with your studies including Disabled Students Allowance, Adult Learning Allowance, and the NHS Learning Support Fund. For more details on student finance and support schemes, visit salford.ac.uk/ undergraduate/fees

More information is also available on the government website at gov.uk/student-finance

Don’t let money worries stop you from going to university. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to afford to live away from home, but the maintenance loan covered all of my bills and accommodation. There’s so much help and support in place if you do have any worries or questions, so don’t be put off!

*This figure was correct at the time of production (January 2023). For the most up to date information on our fees, please check the relevant course page on our website.

INSPIRE

Our Inspire scheme is open to all new students joining a foundation year or year one of an undergraduate degree based at the University. You’ll receive £150 of credit to spend in a dedicated online store where you can buy learning resources such as text books, electronics or stationery, to give you the best possible start to your studies here at Salford. The scheme runs annually, meaning you’ll receive £150 of credits each year of your undergraduate degree if based here on campus.

For students from low-income backgrounds and living in areas where participation in higher education is low, there will also be the opportunity to receive an additional £350 of credits each year. This will be based on personal circumstances and will be assessed when you register at the start of your degree.

For more details on the scheme visit salford-inspire.co.uk

After that, your loans are repaid at a rate of 9% of your income over the threshold. So, if your salary is £27,000, you’ll pay back 9% of £2,000, which works out at around £15 per month – about the same as buying five coffees each month. Repayments start the April after you graduate (provided you are earning over the threshold). and are taken automatically, so you don’t need to set this up. If you are self-employed, you would be advised to contact HMRC separately to set up the repayments.

For more details and to check your eligibility for a student loan, go to gov.uk/repaying-your-student-loan

**This repayment threshold was announced in February 2022 for students living in England or Wales starting their degree from September 2023. It differs for residents of Northern Ireland and Scotland. The repayment threshold is set by the government and the amounts change on 6 April every year.

71 FEES AND FINANCE
The £9,250-a-year price tag attached to your degree might sound like a scary sum, but did you know that after graduating, you won’t have to pay back a single penny of your tuition fee or maintenance loans until you’re earning over £25,000** per year.

79 HOW TO APPLY

INFORMATION YOU SHOULD BE AWARE OF WHEN APPLYING TO STUDY WITH US

We provide information about our courses, facilities and fees in this guide as far in advance as possible to give you an idea of what is available and plenty of time to consider your options. However, this inevitably means there will be changes to the information between the date this guide is produced (January 2023) and the date we make you an offer and we reserve the right to update or add to any information in this guide at any time.

Before deciding whether to apply for a course, make sure you visit our website salford.ac.uk as this is the definitive, up-to-date and detailed source of information about our courses and fees. In the event of any inconsistencies between information in this guide and on the website, information held on the website will prevail. Alternatively, contact our course enquiries team at +44 (0)161 295 4545 or enquiries@salford.ac.uk to request this information.

Changes to our courses and facilities for the wellbeing of our students, staff and the wider community may be required and we will adhere to any national, regional or local restrictions should they arise.

We also reserve the right to change the information about our courses and facilities in this guide at any time. Reasons for such changes include, for example:

/ Our need to withdraw or change a course or module because we have insufficient student numbers or funding to run it viably or to give the appropriate educational experience.

/ We have to respond to unforeseen circumstances outside our control (such as requirements of any governmental, regulatory or professional bodies or the introduction of any new or modified laws or regulations).

/ We think the changes are desirable to improve or maintain quality or will enhance the student experience or be otherwise beneficial to students.

We aim to give students and applicants who have accepted offers as much notice as possible of any withdrawals of, or significant changes to, courses or modules or our facilities and to take all reasonable steps to minimise any disruption. However, it may not always be practicable for us to give advance notice of changes where we have to respond to an emergency or adapt to rapidly changing circumstances. Students whose courses are adversely affected by any significant unforeseeable change will have the right to switch courses or, in the absence of any suitable alternative, to leave the University and transfer to another provider. Such changes during studies should only happen in very exceptional circumstances. Where they do happen, we will, as far as we are able, assist students with the practicalities of switching.

We make every effort to ensure that all changes we make to courses and facilities are detailed on our website as soon as is reasonably practical.

If your application for a particular course is successful, we will send you an offer letter which, depending on your circumstances, may require you to fulfil certain conditions before you join us.

If you accept the offer in our offer letter, you will have a legally binding contract with us on the date you accept – even if you still have outstanding conditions to fulfil at the date you accept. However, the contract will be automatically cancelled if you do not meet all of the conditions on which the offer is made.

Our offer letter will set out (or provide links to) everything you need to know about the terms and conditions of the contract (including fees and payment) and all of our academic and other regulations, rules and procedures which apply to students. To give you an idea what to expect, our ‘Student Terms and Conditions’ and ‘Key Facts About Fees’ document for the 2022/23 academic year are accessible via salford.ac.uk/student-terms-and-conditions They contain the core information students need to know and also provide links to the regulations, rules and procedures so they are easy to find. As the current versions of documents are likely to change before you join us, we remind you that our offer letter will provide, or give links to, the most up-to-date versions should you accept our offer.

It is a requirement for all students to register with us at the start of each academic year and only students who are registered may study our courses and access our facilities. Information about what you need to do to register will be provided.

Some courses may have additional fees associated with them, for example for specific materials or field trips. We won’t know the exact amount of these additional fees until closer to the time that they are required. Where appropriate, we have therefore provided an indication of the additional fees required based on costs available at the time of going to print (January 2023). Please keep checking our website for the most up-to-date and detailed information at salford.ac.uk

We make every effort to assist students in finding placements where they are a requirement of their courses. However, employers have a limited number of placements available and we cannot guarantee that students will have access to the placement of their choice. Students who wish to undertake placements as an optional part of their course are responsible for finding them, but support will be provided (please visit the relevant course page on our website where you can find more detail).

The personal information that you provide to us (whether as an applicant or as a registered student) will be held and processed by the University in accordance with applicable data protection legislation. Please read our privacy statement for more details at salford.ac.uk/privacy

81 IMPORTANT INFORMATION

OTHER STUDY OPTIONS

As well as three-year degrees, we also offer a wide range of other study options. Here’s some more information on our alternative study options including foundation years, partner college study, accelerated degrees and degree apprenticeships.

FOUNDATION YEARS PARTNER COLLEGE STUDY

We believe that higher education should be within reach for all those who are passionate about learning and achieving their career goals. If you’ve got the drive and commitment to study, but don’t quite have the qualifications needed to start an honours degree, a foundation year course could be for you.

Our range of foundation courses can help to equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to progress onto one of our undergraduate degrees. They’ll introduce you to key concepts and ideas, and provide you with basic knowledge of approaches, concepts, theories and principles. The foundation level places strong emphasis on the development of relevant study/transferable skills and a responsible approach to learning through a set of compulsory core modules. These are ideal if you want to develop your career but don’t meet the entry requirements for direct entry to an honours degree or have the appropriate background knowledge.

They are also suited to you if you are returning to education or if you wish to change career direction. You can see which of our degrees offer a foundation year in the course listings at the back of this booklet.

You can also look at our course listings online for the latest information at salford.ac.uk

As part of our commitment to giving more people access to higher education, we work with further education colleges in the north-west to offer a wide range of courses where you can study locally, with the option of progressing to the University of Salford to complete or continue your studies.

This range of courses includes degrees and foundation degrees. Some of the degree programmes provide the opportunity of studying the first year at a local college before progressing to the University to complete your degree. Other degree programmes are taught at the partner as a top-up to your foundation degree.

Courses at our partner colleges currently include the areas of business, arts, sport and psychology.

To ensure you have the maximum chance of success whilst studying at a partner college, we provide a dedicated programme of support throughout the year. This includes talks by University academic staff to students at partner colleges and organised visits to the University campus to attend events relevant to your programme of study, such as guest lectures and masterclasses. As a partner college student, you will also register as a student here at Salford too and therefore have access to certain University facilities and resources whilst you study (dependent on the partner arrangement).

More information about our partner colleges and the programmes we run is available at salford.ac.uk/partner-colleges

THE GREATER MANCHESTER INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

We’re delighted to be part of a team of education institutions and employer partners who have come together to bring an Institute of Technology to Greater Manchester. Here’s a bit more about what it will do and how it will work.

WHAT IS IT?

Institutes of Technology (IoTs) are the government’s flagship programme designed to spearhead the delivery of higher technical education in STEM subjects.

Led by the University of Salford with Wigan and Leigh College as the lead FE partner, the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology (GMIoT) brings together a number of colleges and employers in the city region and will specialise in construction, engineering, health and digital skills.

WHO ARE THE PARTNERS?

University of Salford; Ada, the National College for Digital Skills; Bury College; Tameside College; Wigan & Leigh College; GCHQ; Laing O’Rourke; Siemens; and Talk Talk.

WHAT SORT OF QUALIFICATIONS CAN I DO THERE?

The GMIoT will offer a range of courses, including new Higher Technical Qualifications and apprenticeships, designed to fast track learners into jobs in growth sectors for Greater Manchester. Developed in collaboration with employers, these qualifications are designed to give you the right training, knowledge, and skills to succeed in the workplace.

The courses on offer are aimed at those studying at Level 4 and 5, typically equivalent to the first and second years’ of a standard degree, and are for both school leavers and those wanting to upskill or those returning to study in later life.

CAN I APPLY NOW?

Yes, you can apply now. Take a look at the HND courses we’ve launched as part of the GMIoT in our Arts, Media and Creative Technologies, Business and Computing and Engineering subject areas in our course listings (pages 88 to 97).

WHERE IS THE GMIOT BASED?

The GMIoT will operate on a hub and spoke model, with capital funding being invested in a new centre at the University of Salford and hubs across Greater Manchester, with investment committed to the upgrade of existing facilities across partner colleges. Construction of the new building on the University of Salford’s campus is due to start in 2023.

For more details on the study options available for the subject you’re interested in, visit the course pages on our website at salford.ac.uk

APPRENTICESHIPS

An apprenticeship allows you to study whilst earning a salary and gaining practical, on-the-job skills. This work-based route means you will be working alongside industry experts gaining vital experience to help you excel in your chosen career.

If you’re looking to gain a degree qualification along with experience in line with your chosen career path, then an apprenticeship could be the perfect route for you. You’ll have the ability to apply theory and knowledge from the classroom directly to your place of work on an ongoing basis.

You will study part-time at the university and will spend the rest of your time in the workplace.

These apprenticeships are funded by the government and your employer so there are no tuition fees to worry about. We work with a wide range of employers including Peninsula, Manchester City Council, Manchester Airport Group, Network Rail, the NHS, Morgan Sindall, Seddon Construction, Pets at Home and Wilmott Dixon.

We currently cover a wide range of disciplines, from business to nursing, biomedical science to construction and physiotherapy to engineering, and our offer will grow as the government approves new apprenticeship programmes.

How would describe the support you’ve achieved from the University of Salford?

The wrap around support from the University and the course lecturers has been second to none to be honest.

What has been your proudest achievement on your apprenticeship to date?

Due to a timely restructure within our own public health team, I have had the opportunity to apply and be successful in obtaining the role of Public Health Practitioner for Mental Health and Wellbeing. This wouldn’t have been possible if I hadn’t been seen to be engaging in an appropriate professional qualification in Public Health due to the application criteria.

What do you want to do once you complete your apprenticeship?

Continue to work in a Public Health environment and utilise all my learning to build a reputation of being an excellent Public Health Practitioner and to really make a difference to my local community via projects of intervention.

Jim McGlynn, a BSc Public Health Practitioner student studying at the University of Salford, is an apprentice from Bury Council.

TOM BA (Hons) Broadcast Journalism

I didn’t know that I wanted to go to the University of Salford until I came here for an Open Day and I was like 'WOW! I have to go here’ it just really opened my eyes and the facilities here are just amazing, it got me really excited.

I think it’s important to take into account, not just the university but also the location. It was everything I wanted from a course, the accommodation was great, the facilities and the campus – for me it was just perfect.

What it’s equipped me with is incomparable to any other experience that I’d get from any other university, so absolutely, I would do it all again.

RACHEL BA (Hons) Graphic Design

Studying here at Salford is great. Everything is on campus. You've got the food restaurants, you've got Atmosphere SU and the sports gym here on campus, so everything is close knit. It's almost like a family, I would say. All my friends live within the same area and there's so much to do on campus and it's only a short distance into town as well.

NIAMH

BA (Hons) Broadcast Journalism

Anyone thinking about studying here at the University of Salford - do it! It's absolutely incredible. It just feels like a home away from home and i'm really proud to say that it is my new home now and I don't ever want to leave it. It's the most comforting place, with the most amazing people, fantastic facilities and beautiful views all the way around.

SASHA

BA (Hons) Media and Performance

The reason I chose to study media and performance at the University of Salford is mainly because they don't do media and performance as a joint course at many other universities. I visited one other uni that offered it, but it just didn't click for me and then when I came to join the University of Salford, I just absolutely loved the space, the atmosphere was booming and I just fell in love with it straight away.

You can navigate through the platform to find out what life is like at Salford from current or recently graduated students, what your study experience could be like with our tutor videos, and how to find advice and support along the way.
