Dear USD Alumni Community, As the new president of the Alumni Association, I want you to know that it is an honor to be working for you, my fellow alumni. I am one of you, and like you, am passionate about the growth and development of the university and our alumni and student communities. Under the leadership of our past president, Maureen Gavron Partynski ’82, we have made great progress on our strategic goals for creating an active and engaged alumni community. This past year, we increased attendance at signature programs and celebrated a record number of alumni donors to the annual fund. Thank you! We continue to update our events and programs for our alumni. To find a list of upcoming events and alumni services, please continue to navigate around our website at alumni.sandiego.edu. I invite you to reconnect with fellow classmates at Homecoming and Family Weekend, show your Torero spirit at a local sporting event, sip and learn at the Wine Classic and gather with nearby alumni at regional programs. Anytime throughout the year, you are invited to stop in and see us at the Degheri Alumni Center, your home when you are on campus. We look forward to seeing you in San Diego, nationwide and abroad, and to continuing our successes in the coming year.

USD Alumni Vision
USD Alumni Mission
Our Strategic Plan
• We envision alumni — both undergraduate and graduate — who are connected and proud, who raise the profile of the University of San Diego and who continue to support its mission of service and Catholic education.
Our mission is to connect, engage and involve alumni with the University of San Diego and with one another in support of the university’s mission and goals as a Roman Catholic institution.
The USD Alumni Association developed a strategic plan to chart the course of the organization through 2015. This strategic plan outlines a new way of thinking, organizing and measuring success that will better meet the needs of alumni and the university. The USD Alumni Association is primarily charged with engaging alumni and building relationships with alumni. At USD, alumni are encouraged to give back to the university by volunteering and by contributing to class giving, alumni endowed scholarships and the Alcalá Alumni Fund, which supports the university’s greatest needs.
• We envision alumni who are excited about having graduated from USD. They support each other, cheer for each other and support the university spiritually, intellectually and financially.
We also strive to build effective communication vehicles, programs and events that build strong and lasting relationships between alumni and their alma mater.
• We envision that prospective students will choose USD in part because of the strength and vibrancy of its alumni network. • We envision a transformed USD community that instinctively expects alumni involvement in all facets of campus life.

USD’s national and international prominence is enhanced through stronger ties with alumni and by the alumni themselves.
Five core themes of the USD Alumni Association Highlights in 2012-13 strategic plan are: The Alumni Association is proud of its accomplishments during 2012-13. Here are just 1. Employ targeted and segmented engagement strategies. 2. Promote an alumni-inclusive perspective: alumni relations is the work of the entire USD community. 3. Embrace a volunteer-driven organization model where volunteers are empowered to build and manage their own programs. Work with alumni to create engagement experiences. 4. Become more relevant in the lives of alumni through targeted communication and programs that resonate with alumni.
some of the highlights. • Hosted more than 120 events and programs across the United States and abroad, and engaged nearly 9,000 alumni, parents, students and friends of the university. • Supported more than 700 alumni volunteers, of which 52 percent contributed financially to support USD. • Stewarded nearly 10,000 student interactions with alumni. • Raised more than $56,000 at the annual Wine Classic and attracted a record attendance of more than 740 guests with the help of 50 alumni volunteers. • Supported a university-initiated task force dedicated to engaging alumni and building relationships. Those relationships will present new opportunities for alumni to be part of a larger USD community. • Reached a record number of alumni donors in collaboration with the annual giving office, with 3,904 alumni making a financial contribution to the university.
5. Measure success through targeted benchmarks and create an engagement dashboard with monthly progress.

Homecoming and Family Weekend Homecoming, reunions and parent weekends have been long-standing traditions at the University of San Diego. Borrowing the best elements from Homecoming festivities, which were first celebrated in 1957, and Parent and Family Weekend, which was first held in 1988, USD combined the traditions in 2011 into one Torero Blue weekend! Programs included forums, campus tours, affinity and class reunions, a student concert, tailgate festivities, a football game and a closing Mass. Approximately 2,100 alumni, parents, students, faculty and staff attended the host of weekend activities.
BY THE NUMBERS — HOMECOMING AND FAMILY WEEKEND 2012 • 2,100 Guests • 900
Class and affinity reunion participants in more than 20 different celebrations
• 44-0 The score when the Toreros defeated Davidson on the football field • $1.7 Million donated throughout the year by alumni • 85+

USD Wine Classic Established in 2009 by the Alumni Association Board, the University of San Diego Wine Classic is an unforgettable wine tasting event held at the Joan B. Kroc Institute of Peace & Justice’s scenic Garden of the Sea, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The event draws more than 740 guests and showcases the owners and vintners from 31 USD-affiliated wineries, and features more than 60 wines. This year’s Wine Classic raised more than $56,000 for the Alumni Endowed Scholarship Fund. More than 50 alumni volunteers help plan and work at the event to create a magical experience.
Alumni Christmas Mass Each December, alumni and friends join together in a celebration of faith at the annual USD Alumni Christmas Mass in Founders Chapel. During this special holiday tradition, the Student Alumni Association hosted a toy drive; guests brought unwrapped toys which were contributed to the local Mission Valley YMCA to be distributed to families in need.

Philanthropy SENIOR CLASS LEGACY The Senior Class Legacy is a proud USD tradition in which graduating seniors leave their legacy by making a gift to this scholarship fund. The vision of the scholarship is to award students who have financial need and are making a lasting impact on the university. The class of 2013 brought in more than 250 senior gifts, increasing the Senior Class Legacy participation rate from 13 percent (class of 2012) to 23 percent.
ALCALÁ ALUMNI FUND
Alumni participation is the percentage of alumni who give back to their alma mater. National ranking guidebooks, such as U.S. News & World Report, use it as evidence of alumni satisfaction, as an indication of the general prestige and a way to measure overall institutional quality ratings.
ALUMNI PARTICIPATION University of San Diego graduates are the only individuals who can boost USD’s alumni participation rate. There are many reasons why each gift, no matter the size, is essential to the success of the university and its students: • Each gift helps USD continue to attract top-notch faculty and students and makes a positive impact on the community, the region, the nation and the world.
• Participation is crucial in securing government and foundation grants. Your gift could make the difference as to whether the university receives a substantial grant. • National college ranking organizations use alumni participation in the ranking process. As the university’s ranking increases, so does the value of your degree. • Participation is a vote of confidence — it shows the world how proud you are to be a member of the USD family.

This fund provides critical unrestricted funding to support the university’s greatest needs. Allocated with direction from alumni, gifts to the Alcalá Alumni Fund may support scholarships, academic programs, classroom enhancements and the retention and recruitment of esteemed faculty.
CULTURE OF GIVING In 2012, we established a Student Culture of Giving committee consisting of undergraduate student leaders across campus. With nearly 70 percent of students receiving some form of financial aid while attending USD, this program’s goal is to instill the value of philanthropy and encourage them to give back to their fellow Toreros. The committee’s efforts increased the undergraduate student giving participation from 3 to 10 percent - all gifts were made for Toreros, from Toreros.
ALUMNI CONNECTIONS FUND This fund, established in 2013 by the Alumni board, is a reinvestment in USD alumni. Every dollar will be leveraged to engage with alumni locally, nationally and globally to further the strategic causes of the Alumni Association.
Are You a True Blue Torero?
Diego’s Mission This year, Diego was on a mission. His goal was to see that more USD alumni than ever before – 4,500 – made a gift to support their alma mater. Every gift gave him a little more strength, and by fiscal year end in June 2013, he would have the muscle to ring the bell. Diego was able to see that more USD alumni than ever before made a gift, but fell short of ringing the bell. More than 3,900 USD alumni made gifts and gave Diego something to cheer about – making it our best year yet!
4500
Our Best Year Yet!
3,904 DONORS
The generosity of our alumni – our True Blue Toreros – directly impacted our students and provided them with a dynamic learning environment. Every gift counts! No matter the amount, it’s your participation that’s important. Over the last five years, alumni raised more than $1,000,000 for the alumni endowed scholarships with 90 percent of the gifts being $250 or less. Thank you for your continued support!
A USD alumnus/a who understands the importance of giving back and making a difference is a True Blue Torero. By making a gift, of any amount, you are changing the lives of Toreros everywhere – past, present 3500like U.S. and future. Ranking agencies News & World Report use the percentage of alumni who give back as their indicator of alumni satisfaction. By participating and making a gift, your support has helped us move into the Top 100 nationally-ranked 2500 universities, and our rankings will continue to rise with faithful support from alumni like you. We are proud to call you a USD alumnus/a. You are part of an exclusive heritage that has seen dramatic growth over the past few decades. Your contribution to our growth is a reason for pride. You walked this campus and participated in our culture, learning and sports. You, above all, deserve our praise and admiration for adding to our legacy, life and service to the community.
‘DIEGO’ TORERO
“I give to USD because it has given me so much, both as a student and as an alumnus. Now I want to give the next generation of Toreros the same USD experience that I had.”

USD ALUMNI ACROSS THE NATION
Toreros are inquisitive, ambitious and intellectually curious. It’s no surprise that after graduation, life often leads them far from their alma mater. But wherever they wind up, their Torero spirit keeps them connected to campus. The Alumni Association has established chapters in nearly two dozen U.S. regions, each created due to high alumni population. In fact, an astounding 85 percent of University of San Diego alumni live near one of the areas highlighted here. Beyond the obvious benefits — built-in support communities, professional networking and an ongoing connection to USD — each chapter offers professional development opportunities along with a chance to volunteer with local regional committees. Check out the one nearest you, and keep your Torero Spirit blazing bright. If outside the U.S., we’ve got you covered. Contact the Office of International Constituent Relations at icr@sandiego.edu.
