WELCOME PARENTS AND FAMILIES. The University of San Diego welcomes parents and families of first-year and transfer students. We are pleased your student decided to attend USD and we are committed to supporting our USD families. If you have any questions during the weekend, don’t hesitate to reach out to our wonderful parent ambassadors and alumni volunteers stationed throughout campus.

Parent and Family Orientation introduces families to the resources available to students, provides information about how the resources work and offers an opportunity to ask questions. Since there are different events held for the parents and families of first-year students and transfer students, be sure to navigate this program according to what best applies to you and your family. Events marked with a ticket icon in this program require tickets to attend. See page 8 for details.


FRIDAY, AUGUST 26 Today’s activities are for first-year students and their families only. If you are moving your new first-year student in this morning, please refer to the Move-In Memo your student received by email for move-in times and more. Don’t forget to visit the Parent and Family Information Center. See page 2 for details. 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Lunch is available on campus. New students eat for free at Pavilion Dining in the Student Life Pavilion (SLP) with their meal card. New Student and Family Picnic Valley Field

This event is for first-year students and their families only. This is a USD tradition that is not to be missed! Celebrate your arrival at USD with fellow Torero families. Each family member/guest is required to have a dinner ticket. Tickets are $25 per adult and $15 per youth (12 and younger). New USD students do not need to purchase tickets; their name tags will serve as their tickets. Gluten-free and vegetarian options will be available upon request. See the ticket information on page 8 for additional details. 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

GET SETTLED AND EXPLORE CAMPUS

Parent and Family Information Center Various locations and times

The Office of Parent Relations and parent ambassadors are available to answer your questions. You may purchase tickets to welcome festivities and drop off your “Note to my Torero” here. On Friday, the Parent and Family Information Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Degheri Alumni Center. On Saturday, it will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice (KIPJ) Rotunda. On Sunday, it will be open from 8 a.m. to noon at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice Rotunda.

Campus Card Services

Hahn University Center (UC), Room 127 Friday and Saturday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Sunday, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.

If your student uploaded a photo over the summer, he/she will receive their Torero ID card at move-in. Commuters and students who did not upload a photo may get their Torero ID card at Campus Card Services.

One Stop Student Center

Hahn University Center (UC), Room 126 Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday, 10:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.

The One Stop Student Center has representatives from Student Accounts, the Office of Financial Aid and the Registrar available to answer your questions.

USD Torero Store

Hahn University Center (UC) Friday – Sunday, 8 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Visit the USD Torero Store to buy books, supplies, technology and USD apparel. Textbooks ordered online will be available for pickup during normal business hours.

Parking Services

In front of Hahn University Center (UC) Friday, noon – 4 p.m.

Visit the Parking Services table for assistance with parking permits and parking questions. Parking permits are available for purchase online at sandiego.edu/parking.

Mail Center Move-In Pickup

Various locations and times

Students living on campus may visit the Mail Center Move-In Pickup location to pick up any packages sent to their university address prior to arrival. On Friday, Move-In Pickup will be in the parking lot behind The Immaculata Church from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. On Saturday, it will be at the Mail Center at Maher Annex from 8 a.m. to noon. The Mail Center’s regular hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

U.S. Bank

Hahn University Center (UC), Room 125 Friday and Saturday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Sunday, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Visit the on-campus U.S. Bank branch to open an account or ask your banking questions. ATMs are located at the Hahn University Center and the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

ITS Help Desk

Various locations and times

Look for Information Technology Services (ITS) tables on Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Camino Hall patio, Maher Hall foyer and Mission Crossroads for tech support. Sunday, visit the main ITS office in the Hahn University Center (UC), Room 117 or the Help Desk in the Torero Store between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

First-Year Parent and Family Informational Sessions I You may attend any of the following sessions: • First-Year Student Experience Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice (KIPJ), Theatre This session is a must for parents and supporters of new first-year students. Learn what your student is about to encounter in his/her first year at the university, including Living Learning Communities (LLCs), the USD Preceptorial Program, Residential Life, Orientation, student support initiatives and more! Engage in a dialogue with a distinguished panel of USD administrators and student leaders working closely with your student during this time of transition. • Parents as Partners: Plan for Career Success Manchester Hall Auditorium It’s never too early to start thinking about your student’s future career. Parents play a critical role in their student’s college experience and his/her decisions for the future. Join the Career Development Center team to learn about USD’s comprehensive career plan and how you can support your student’s career development throughout his/her time at USD.

Learn more about how the meal plan works and all the discounts and savings available at USD. • Student and Leadership Involvement at USD Mother Rosalie Hill Hall (SOLES), Warren Auditorium It’s not just about academics! USD offers a variety of ways for students to develop their leadership capacities through involvement. Learn about various involvement opportunities at USD and how they can assist in your student’s adjustment, satisfaction and academic success. • The Practice of Changemaking Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice (KIPJ), Rooms E and F USD is a Changemaker campus! What does this mean? USD students act as agents of change and positively impact the community. Hear about USD’s Changemaker Hub initiative and how your student can get involved.

• Founders Chapel Tour Founders Hall, Founders Chapel Guests will take a tour and learn the history of USD’s Founders Chapel with Sr. Virginia Rodee ’57, ’74. • Getting Down to Business Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice (KIPJ), Rooms H and I Representatives from the One Stop Student Center, Student Accounts and Financial Aid will discuss financial responsibilities including the financial aid award and acceptance process, billing statements and tuition payment, how to access the USD web portal, granting parents online access to student information and details about the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Please see previous description. • Health and Wellness Manchester Hall Auditorium The university’s wellness team will provide you with information about adjusting to college in a healthy and safe manner. This session will address the important role parents play in helping their student make good choices and the resources available through USD’s Center for Health and Wellness Promotion. Campus emergency procedures, off-campus safety, alcohol and other drug use will be discussed. • Navigating USD Academics Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice (KIPJ), Theatre Hear from USD College of Arts and Sciences faculty members and administrators about USD’s core curriculum, selecting classes, where to find academic support and ways in which your student can make the most of his/her USD education. • Parents of Collegiate Athletes Mother Rosalie Hill Hall (SOLES), Warren Auditorium Is your student participating in intercollegiate athletics at USD? Our athletic department will share important information from the student athlete handbook, discuss expectations and outline services and resources available to assist student athletes in maintaining NCAA athletics eligibility. • Safety and Navigating San Diego Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice (KIPJ), Rooms A – D Hear from USD’s Department of Public Safety on the important role parents play in helping their student make good choices regarding personal safety. Campus emergency procedures, off-campus safety, alcohol and other drug use will be discussed.

Have you wondered what your role as a parent will be now that your student is in college? USD parents share their experiences supporting their students and the insight they’ve acquired during their journey at USD. Students will share their experiences and discuss their transitions to USD.

A very special Mass has been prepared to welcome all new students and their families into the USD community. All denominations are welcome and encouraged to attend. At the conclusion of the Mass, families will have the opportunity to take part in the USD tradition of blessing their students as they begin their college experience.
