DEPARTMENT OF
Public Safety AND TRAM SERVICES
Vision
The Department of Public Safety’s vision is to
lead in all areas of professional campus safety
practices and to effectively address the safety and security needs of the USD community. We are dedicated to upholding the mission of the university by supporting an environment in which diverse social, cultural and academic values are free to develop and prosper.
Overview
The USD Department of Public Safety provides service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to more than 10,000 students, faculty and staff throughout the year. The Department of Public Safety places the security of the campus as its top priority. It helps to educate the campus community on crime prevention, offers safety tips and provides numerous trainings to the campus community. Among those are, Campus Emergency Procedures Review and Guidance Training —— held twice per month during the academic semesters —— R.A.D. Self-Defense training and trainings on emergency preparedness.
Patrol Division
Public safety officers patrol the campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week to ensure safety and provide a constant presence. They are prepared to respond to both emergency and non-emergency calls for service and provide mutual aid assistance to local agencies when requested. They also provide a wide range of services to the campus community,
including crime prevention, crime control, protection of life and property, and routinely conduct presence and detection patrols. Public safety officers monitor for suspicious activity and take action as required; responding to incidents, rendering first aid and directing traffic for special events on campus. Public safety officers also provide safety presentations for departments on campus. All officers attend Advanced Officer Training each year and hold both Guard Card and Basic Firearms Certifications.
Dispatch Center
The Dispatch Center for the University of San Diego is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week with highly trained public safety dispatchers. The Dispatch Center is responsible for providing around-the-clock communications and coordination of public safety services to the campus community. USD Dispatch staff members answer incoming telephone calls and dispatch public safety officers to incidents on campus. They monitor fire and alarm systems, as well as coordinate with the San Diego Police and Fire Department Dispatch Centers.
Emergency Preparedness
Emergency Preparedness Workshops
The Department of Public Safety and the Emergency Preparedness Manager coordinate campus emergency preparedness efforts. This includes the development, implementation and maintenance of the campus emergency management program as well as coordinates on-campus efforts to help prepare in the case of an emergency.
Emergency preparedness workshops are held each year to assist members of the campus community with how to develop their own emergency plan for their homes and workplaces. These informative workshops help provide the latest information on how to plan for emergencies. “Our responsibility to be ready for preparedness never ends; being a Changemaker is taking responsibility for readiness.” David S. Burns, CEM Emergency Preparedness Manager
