President’s Message Dear Accolade s Reader, I am happy to present another excellent publication highlighting the University’s activities. As I previewed the noteworthy items included in this edition, I was struck by the international perspective of some of USA’s activities. I think back to 1994 when this institution consisted of a handful of faculty, administrators and students housed in two buildings in the little town of St. Augustine, Florida. These pioneers were building a University that had the potential of having a far reaching impact. They probably did not think about that at the time. They were building curricula, establishing day-to-day practices, setting standards, and living their professional values. Fast forward to 2013. We are a geographically diverse institution with three campuses in the US and professional activities in many countries. Our faculty have diverse educational and clinical backgrounds. We admit students from across the United States and several countries. These students come to our educational programs with diverse personal experiences that enhance our learning environments, community service projects and professional activities. As the University has grown in size, our perspective has expanded well beyond the confines of our campus environment. We are an international institution, with far reaching influences. Through our professional expertise, we have much to offer our communities far and wide in the way of health care support and advocacy. I am proud to see our alumni, students, and employees taking those steps to make a difference. I should take this opportunity to thank those early faculty and staff who set us in the right path. The University’s vision is “to be the leading international university in innovative health sciences education.” Are we there yet? No, but we get closer every day. I know we have the passion, focus, and persistence to work toward this vision. “Achievement is largely the product of steadily raising one’s levels of aspiration… and expectation.” - Jack Nicklaus

Alumni Weekend was a great opportunity to catch up with old friends, colleagues and faculty. The University did an excellent job of incorporating social responsibility, professional development and fun into one weekend. The USA 5K was a hit again this year. Getting a little exercise in, enjoying the sunny Florida weather and helping to support a worthy cause (not to mention the free t-shirt), was the perfect way to kick off the festivities! The four continuing professional education seminars that attendees could choose from were diverse and appealing to all practicing therapists. The faculty running each of the courses did an excellent job presenting their topics. The course I participated in was informative, interactive and very well organized. Topping the weekend off was the alumni gathering. Great music, good food and old friends...what more could you want in one weekend? The first annual alumni weekend was a huge success! Thank you to all of the USA staff who helped organize the weekend. I can’t wait to do it again next year. -Kayla Collins, USA MOT Alumni 4

What factors were most important to you when choosing a DPT program? Kylee Bell Says: “I searched for programs that had professors with backgrounds in different interests within the physical therapy realm. I did not want to attend a school that only had one primary focus, so I could make the decision of what focus felt best for me after experiencing each one within the pro-
8
Hear what some of our first cohort representatives are saying about the newest campus location in Austin, TX gram. I also looked for applications that focused more on the person as a whole, which included essay questions like “Why do I want to be a physical therapist?” and “What experiences have I had that have helped prepare me for this road to being a PT?” The mission statements of each school I looked at, as well as how the faculty presented themselves in person was also very important to me during this process. The more clear, concise, and encouraging words I received from each program, the more likely I was to apply to that program.” Austin Kocchi Says: “The biggest issue for me was choosing a program that produces competent, professional therapists immediately after graduation. Throughout my experiences shadowing and working at a PT technician, I’ve met a number of PT students on their clinical rotations as well as a number of young therapists.

Some of which I felt were more competent than others. The therapists and students I’ve come across from USA have displayed a solid foundation of knowledge and professionalism, which I’ve come to respect. Other factors that I considered were location of the school in regards to quality of life, as well as the likelihood of staying and practicing within the area.”
Why did you choose to attend USA? Peyton Sykes Says: “I chose to attend USA’s Texas campus for a variety reasons. It was close to family and I loved the idea of being apart of the inaugural class of a new physical therapy campus. Most importantly, I chose USA because of its reputation for being a premier physical therapy program with an emphasis on Manual Therapy. My uncle achieved his Transitional degree online through USA and had nothing but great things to say. So I contacted the school and they were nothing but helpful, informative and responded in a way which made me feel as though they wanted me there as a student. Midway through the first semester, that level of respect has not changed and I know I made the right choice!” Austin Kocchi Says: “I was turned on to USA from a therapist I had the opportunity to work under as a PT technician. The professionalism and quality education he presented was what lead me to apply to USA. During my search for more information I realized that USA was opening a new campus in Austin, TX. It was then I realized I had the opportunity to represent the continuation of this university’s tradition of producing quality therapist while having the opportunity to help guide the direction of the new Austin campus.”
What do you like best about going to school in Austin, TX? Kylee Bell Says: “I love Austin, Texas! Going to school here in Austin has been
such a blessing. The people in Austin are the most friendly people I’ve met in the United States. Everyone is welcoming and there are plenty of activities to do around here. There is definitely something in Austin for people of all ages.” Peyton Sykes Says: “I love the small campus feel with the new facility. Everything here is new and you aren’t competing with hundreds of students to use it. We’re more like a family and the campus has really been set up to the advantage of the student with group study rooms, private study rooms, an interactive learning lab and a lot more.” Austin Kocchi Says: “I really enjoy living in a large, thriving city like Austin. It has all the amenities of any other major city but has a unique personality that promotes a strong community-first approach as well as individualism. The area also has so much going on! Austin is the live music capital of the world, so you don’t have to go far to find entertainment if you are looking for some. If music and dancing isn’t your forte, there are plenty of beautiful outdoor opportunities to take advantage of. There are great trails for running, hiking and biking throughout the city as well as just outside the city limits. There seems to be a scene for everyone here, wherever your interests and tastes lie.”
Guatemala Erica Kiernan, DPT, MOT, OTR/L coordinated a volunteer service learning trip for OT, PT and MOPA students from the St. Augustine campus to Guatemala City, Guatemala August 18 – 25, 2012. The trip was arranged through Cross Cultural Solutions. Bonnie Decker, EdD, OTR/L also accompanied the group. During the experience, students and faculty were placed at different locations to work with individuals with special needs every morning. Dr. Kiernan and students Stephanie Sauer and Amy Hill went to an inpatient rehabilitation setting; Andrew Albright and Bailly Thompson visited a outpatient pediatric clinic; Stephanie Turner and Sarah Szymanski went to a home for elderly women; Dr. Decker went to a pediatric long-term care facility, and Christina Mollica and Heather Ritz went to several different locations in the city to work with medical staff. There were also five other people at the facility that came from other areas of the US. Above is a picture of the group posing in front of one of the many churches in Guatemala.
In the afternoons, the hosts at the facility took the group on different cultural excursions around the area. These excursions were intended to educate volunteers on the customs and history of the people of Guatemala. On Sunday, the group went to Antigua, the former capital of Guatemala, until it was destroyed by an earthquake in the 1700s. On Monday evening, a local speaker came in and presented to the group on Mayan Culture, including the use of the now infamous Mayan calendar. During the trip, the group went on a tour of the city of 10
Guatemala. During the tour, the group visited the only cemetery in Guatemala City, a coffee plantation in Antigua and toured the Mayan museum, where they all made Mayan pottery. The group also got to climb one of the volcanoes! As a perfect ending to the experience, the hosts had the group from USA paint their hands and put them on their wall to show that there are many hands that help everyone, which is pictured below. What a wonderful experience!

As part of an exchange program between the University of St. Augustine and the Universidad de Andres Bellos (UNAB), Dr. Bonnie Decker, MOT Faculty, was an invited guest to teach a seminar on pediatric interventions. Dr. Cindy Mathena, VP/Dean of Post Professional Studies, kicked off the week of study by presenting a session titled “A Global Partnership in Occupational Therapy.” The week of activities was the kick-off event for a post-professional Diplomada in Pediatric Occupational Therapy. During the week Occupational Therapy professionals and students shared their ideas about how the two schools can work together, across boundaries, to educate and serve.
IFOMPT Conference
^ Dr. Catherine Patla accepted the John McMillian Mennell Service award at this year’s IFOMPT conference. Congratulations Dr. Patla!
USA and UNAB have a rich history and friendship in manual therapy and the Dean of Rehabilitation Science Programs for UNAB, Dr. Mariano Rocabado, is a graduate and seminar instructor for USA. USA offers manual therapy seminars and certification in Chile. This was also the first chance Dr. Decker had to experience hand-on teaching with an interpreter, which made for an exciting educational experience for everyone! The picture below was taken on the last day of the seminar to commemorate this amazing experience! Stay tuned for future projects between the two universities!
^ Jan Dommerholt and USA’s Dr. Rob Stanborough gave a 2 hour workshop at the IFOMPT in Quebec City this past October. The workshop consisted of a one hour lecture and a one hour lab, with over 150 attendees!

The Kiwi Spirit Sets Sail
12
In November 2012, USA’s Founding President, Dr. Stanley Paris, christened the Kiwi Spirit, on a beautiful day for his first sea trials. The temperature was 27 degrees at the 5:30 am departure from the dock. The winds were at 10kts which made for enjoyable sailing after the day warmed to a balmy 35 degrees. Dr. Paris is in preparation for his solo non-stop and non-assisted circumnavigation on the Kiwi Spirit while raising funds for the Foundation for Physical Therapy. To break the existing record, Dr. Paris will have to complete the circumnavigation in less than 150 days. Log-on to stanleyparis.com to learn more!

The FPTA Board of Directors, members and staff met with Governor Rick Scott to celebrate the signing of HB799. There were three students in attendance, including University of St. Augustine DPT candidates Garrett Mandel and Leighton Peavler. HB 799 (Temporary Licensure) allows new physical therapy graduates to practice under a temporary license with general supervision while they wait to sit for the State Boards of Physical Therapy Licensure Examination. The new statute was first proposed at the fall 2011 FPTA conference by Garrett Mandel and Lucas Rizer (University of St. Augustine DPT candidate) during a district caucus meeting in Orlando. Following the signing of the bill in the Governor’s office this August, Mandel stated, “We got to spend nearly 30 minutes chatting with Governor Scott about our issues; he was really receptive and truly understood many of the nuances of our field.” Governor Scott’s simple understanding of cutting costs and having successful outcomes with conservative care through physical therapy went further. During the ceremonial signing, he said, “Patient’s with back pain should avoid surgery and go to physical therapy.” As a member of the University of St. Augustine’s Student Advocacy Forum, I say…..”Dear Mr. Scott -- We are going to hold you to that!” - Leighton Peavler, USA DPT student 14

The 4th annual “Pink up the Pace” 5K walk/run was held on October 6, 2012. The event is the largest 5K held in St. Augustine, FL with over 3,000 registered participants this year. Several USA students, staff and alumni received medals in their age groups including Amanda Weekes, Donna McCutchan, Megan Macardy, Billy Massey and David Lomgalio. The organization was founded by Cindy Chaconas, USA Florida campus DPT alumni 2007. Cindy was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in 2009 and founded “Pink up the Pace” to educate people about the disease and early detection. Cindy believes that early detection saves lives and that financial challenges shouldn’t prevent people from getting tested. Over the past few years the organization has assisted over 100 people with mammograms, MRI’s and breast biopsy’s.

DETC Awards Check out our alumni that were nominated for these exciting and honorable awards from the Distance Education and Training Council
Outstanding Graduate Award After serving as a clinical instructor for an entry level Doctor of Physical Therapy student, Edward Mathis questioned why he couldn’t return to school and earn his Transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. As a new leader within the Michigan Physical Therapy Association (MPTA), he wanted to set the best professional example and felt compelled to explore his options. It wasn’t a difficult decision as the University of St. Augustine, where he earned his Master of Physical Therapy in 2000, offered the most flexible options that met his clinical and professional needs. Edward was able to start a TMJ program within the rural hospitalbased system where he works while expanding and building his clinical skills in treating patients with spinal disorders. He is sought after within his clinic for help with difficult spinal patients while lecturing on manual therapy techniques at the local, district and state levels. The program also helped give him the confidence to take a larger role within his professional association, serving MPTA as a member of the Board of Directors, as a District and PAC Chair, and on the APTA House of Delegates, where he helps shape future goals of the association. Edward has worked extensively at the state legislative level towards achieving direct consumer access to physical therapy in the State of Michigan. 20
What does President, Dr. Wanda Nitsch have to say about our Outstanding Graduate winner?
As a graduate of the Doctor of Physical Therapy program, Edward Mathis has displayed many of the University’s core values. One in particular is the value of professional advocacy. Dr. Mathis has consistently supported state and district chapters in his home state of Michigan. It is through holding various positions that Edward has provided visionary leadership and has been an active change agent for the profession of physical therapy. Dr. Mathis is an exemplary graduate, working to advance excellence in rehabilitation health care.
Famous Alumni Award
Through the University of St. Augustine Dr. Bill Boissonnault has experienced the traditional (MS Degree program from 1981-1982) and distant education (DHSc from 1996-99) programmatic formats. In the mid-to-late 1990’s his personal and professional responsibilities would not have allowed him to attend a traditional, onsite and full-time program. This was at a time when he was frustrated with his clinical, educational and research abilities, or lack of. The distant education opportunity offered by USA was the perfect fit. Having the flexibility to balance his personal and professional responsibilities with school and developing a program tailored to his needs was exactly what he was looking for. Bill is a Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation, where he teaches the clinical medicine series in the physical therapy program. He is also adjunct professor at a number of entry-level and transitional DPT programs teaching differential diagnosis. Bill also practices at the University of Wisconsin Hospital/Clinics Spine Physical Therapy Clinic. Bill has authored or co-authored three textbooks and has had numerous articles published related to medical screening and joint manipulation education. He has served on several APTA task forces and committees and as Orthopaedic Section, APTA President. He is currently President of the Foundation for Physical Therapy, Inc. Bill has received numerous awards including: Foundation for Physical Therapy in 2001; the Charles Magistro Distinguished Service Award, the Paris Distinguished Service Award in 2004 for the Orthopaedic Section, APTA; the 2008 John McMennell Outstanding Service Award through AAOMPT; Baethke/Carlin Excellence in Academic Teaching in 2005 through APTA; the Dean’s Teaching Award in 2004-2005 though UW-Madison Medical School; the Excellence and Innovation in Medical Education in 2008; the Helen J. Hislop Award for Outstanding Contributions to Professional Literature through APTA and the 2011 APTA Jack Walker Publication Award.
