Our facilities
We recognise the importance of human connection and prioritise patient care in our teaching. Our students can practise their clinical skills with actors and lifelike manikins, putting theory into practice in our Clinical Simulation Centre, which includes:
• A state-of-the-art immersive learning environment, featuring projection technologies and the latest audiovisual and sensory equipment, to place students at the centre of clinical scenarios, psychologically removing them from the classroom
• A critical care unit, which can be used as an accident and emergency room, a birthing suite, an intensive care unit and an operating theatre
• Two eight-bed Nightingale wards, designed to look and operate like typical NHS wards
• A community flat, where students can be transported into a patient’s home, immersing themselves in a non-clinical environment
• An ambulance bay, with a fully functioning and fully equipped ambulance.

Our curriculum
We make sure that our curriculum keeps pace with changes in technology and best practice, using our excellent facilities and world-leading research to deliver high-quality teaching.
Our students benefit from the support of mentors and other healthcare practitioners, and make full use of our excellent partnerships with local NHS Trusts and healthcare professionals in the independent sector.
Our courses
We offer undergraduate courses in midwifery, nursing and paramedic science. Students spend half their training in clinical placements, to practise their skills in a variety of healthcare settings, under the supervision of qualified practitioners. Placements are completed in the NHS, with private healthcare organisations and with charities, across several settings, including high-dependency wards in hospitals and out in the wider community.
We offer a postgraduate diploma in physician associate studies, which also requires students to spend time in clinical placements, and a postgraduate research course in health sciences.
Continuing professional development
We offer continuing professional development (CPD) courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level for healthcare professionals wishing to develop and enhance their skills.

The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences works under a ‘One Health, One Medicine’ vision, which is to create and lead globally connected health research and education, and to share innovation and knowledge, to sustainably improve the wellbeing of humans and animals. Our research aims to address global healthcare priorities and find evidence to underpin effective and integrated healthcare.
We are passionate about:
• Conducting the right research in the right way, by involving patients, family members and other stakeholders in the design and conduct of our research
• Collaborating closely with the NHS and other healthcare organisations and agencies nationally and internationally
• Developing researchers for the future
• Enhancing health outcomes for patients, families and societies.
Our research is organised into crosscutting research themes and research clusters, including digital health, cancer care, and maternal, child and family health.
