DIGITAL CAMERA OVERVIEW This introductory-level course is designed for beginners to learn the basic tools of their digital cameras and skills to improve their images.

Explore the fundamental principles, techniques and applications and computer images by selecting exposure settings for aperture and shutter.

CHILDREN’S BOOK ILLUSTRATION This class is designed for illustrators looking to tailor their portfolio to appeal to children’s book agents and publishers. You will develop new portfolio pieces with a focus on narrative and promotional materials. Examine the works of contemporary illustrators and discuss techniques, materials and style. You should come to the first class session with examples of your work and a sketchbook.

DRAWING Develop sensitivity to the formal elements of line, value, shape, texture and space, worked individually and in concert. Draw primarily from direct observation as you analyze and improve composition techniques and methods.

References to historical and contemporary drawing practices from many traditions are a part of each class session.

DRAWING – FOSSILS, TAXIDERMY + BOTANICALS

JEWELRY DESIGN + METALSMITHING In this course, acquire working knowledge of jewelry artistry and fabrication skills. Techniques commonly used in jewelry and metalsmithing: sawing, piercing, soldering, basic stone setting, forming and finishing are explored through the creation of individual projects. Design and fabricate pieces in the studio and examine contemporary trends in jewelry and metalsmithing.

Additional costs may be incurred for materials depending on the scope of the individual project selected.

In this course, you will draw from observation using a collection of animal bones, skulls (human, deer, llama, raccoon), tortoise shells, stuffed birds, animal hides and starfish. In addition, plant specimens such as gourds, pinecones and other artifacts from nature will be used.

Focus on a range of drawing techniques and concepts as applied to this subject area, considering cross-contour, rendering techniques, texture, abstraction and reduction/simplification. Also included are opportunities to draw off-campus, with a session at either the Wagner Free Institute of Science’s 19th century exhibit hall or the Mutter Museum of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, with its collections of anatomical specimens, models and medical instruments.

This course is an excellent way to expand a fine art portfolio; students should have some previous beginner-level drawing experience.

LETTERPRESS PRINTMAKING The traditional art of printing from engraved plates and metal type is explored using the University’s collection of metal and wood typefaces. Create several printed works via typesetting and the Vandercook Proof Press, allowing for prints up to 22 inches by 24 inches. Design custom polymer plates and perform multicolor printing. Students should anticipate additional costs for materials based on the scope of their individual projects.

FUNDAMENTALS OF DESIGN Receive a strong, broad-based foundation in the visual arts through instruction in drawing and design in a studio setting. This course emphasizes the core fundamentals of 2-D design as the building blocks of visual literacy. Through lectures and hands-on assignments, gain a working knowledge of concepts and the vocabulary needed to facilitate your understanding of visual organization. Projects in a variety of media develop technical skills, sensitivity and perception in order to communicate effective artistic intent and vision.

Through structured critiques, students have the opportunity to evaluate and analyze their work while connecting it to art and design.

METAL SCULPTURE – FORGING + WELDING For a beginner or an advanced student, this course focuses on creating metal sculpture through fabrication. Techniques include oxyacetylene cutting and welding, arc and TIG welding, as well as plasma cutting and forging. Although primarily focused on ferrous metals, instruction also is available in bronze and aluminum.

PAINTING IN THE ABSTRACT Considering invented forms, this course focuses on painting materials, techniques and concepts to help students improve abstract painting.

Learn the basics of color mixing, techniques and pictorial composition, with an emphasis on perceptual painting.

KNITTING WORKSHOP FINGERLESS MITTEN PROJECT

Develop your skills in drawing the human face from observation. Learn how to use light, shadow and line drawings to create the form of the human head. Explore the subject of self-portraiture and its importance as an art form.

In this two-day workshop, you will create a set of fingerless mittens, perfect for cold-weather texting or to give as a lovely gift. In addition to completing a pair of mittens, you will leave with a list of resources and enough knowledge to begin other knitting projects independently. Basic supplies provided.

IPHONE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP Learn to use the apps of the iPhone to create photographs beyond the basic snapshot. Explore how to make artistic images with various camera and processing apps, discuss the importance of resolution and experiment with manipulations of images and talk about sharing via Instagram.

LANDSCAPE PAINTING WEEKEND: CASTLE RINGSTETTEN Under the guidance of renowned landscape artist Joe Sweeney, paint along the banks of the Schuylkill River at Castle Ringstetten, a Victorian-era rest house designed by renowned architect Frank Furness. In this weekend workshop, discover the joy of ‘in the field’ painting while completing finished works in oil, acrylic or pastel. Discuss the landscape genre and its themes, including place and scale and the nature of light.

Address the process of choosing locations and working outdoors, from the challenges and benefits of changing conditions to capturing nature by mixing color. Previous drawing experience is recommended. Materials list and location details provided in advance; location has free parking and restrooms as well as a large porch for shelter, from sun and rain.

DIGITAL MEDIA FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS – LIGHTROOM

EXPERIMENTAL PHOTOGRAPHY

This course provides an overview of Adobe Lightroom, a complete end-to-end software solution for both amateur and professional photographers.

Providing a critical set of tools for digital imaging tasks, Lightroom helps photographers work faster and more efficiently with one image, a set of images or a large image library. Lightroom allows you to organize images and quickly make adjustments.

In this course, learn how to productively work with Lightroom, import images and sort them for organization and efficiency. Also spend time with advanced developing techniques to adjust exposure, contrast and color of images. You’ll learn to edit photos and discover advanced features to enhance workflow.

This course introduces students to a variety of historic and contemporary photographic processes, including cyanotype, Vandyke brown, encaustic medium over photographs and printing digital images on alternative surfaces. Experiment with images through digital manipulation, altering the surfaces of printed images and printing in antiquarian processes. In addition to mastering the technical side of these mostly unconventional processes, work on projects that extend beyond the traditional means of presenting your photography, including printing imagery on materials such as fabric, metal and wood. Prerequisite: Digital Photography II or equivalent experience.

LIGHTROOM BASICS WORKSHOP Adobe Lightroom is a software solution for both amateur and professional photographers that provides useful tools for digital imaging tasks.

Lightroom helps photographers work faster and more efficiently with one image, a set of images or a large image library. Lightroom allow you to organize images and quickly make adjustments. In this overview, learn the basics of how to import images and sort them for organization and efficiency and understand some of the editing tools available.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY I Explore the fundamental principles, techniques and application of digital camera-based image making. Learn to capture images by selecting your exposure settings for aperture and shutter while simultaneously learning about manual metering, color balance and strong composition. This course employs a mixture of lectures, demonstrations, assignments, field trips and critiques. You must have your own digital camera with adjustable exposure and focus and the ability to capture in RAW.

NIGHT + LOW LIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY II If you have completed Digital Photography I or are comfortable with the use of a digital SLR camera (in manual mode), this course will allow you to expand your photographic competency and aesthetic sensibility while learning techniques to improve your work and build a greater understanding of advanced functions of the digital camera. The course stresses the development of a cohesive body of work, with the final goal a series of project-based photographs. Prerequisite: Digital Photography I or equivalent experience.

This course provides the technical background necessary for versatile shooting in lowlight environments. For both beginner and advanced photographers, the objective is to develop your understanding of how to properly determine exposures and create visually compelling photographs under various degrees of available light.

Working in exterior and interior locations with both natural and artificial light sources, you will create a body of nocturnal images. The course consists of approximately 20 percent lecture and presentations, 60 percent shooting on location and 20 percent critique. Students must work in digital format. Prerequisite: Digital Photography II or equivalent experience.

PHOTOJOURNALISM/ DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY

STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY Emphasizing creative solutions to complex photographic problems, this course is designed for those interested in discovering the versatility and creative potential of the studio environment. Learn how controlled studio lighting, both electronic flash and tungsten sources, enhances a photograph. The course incorporates lectures, demonstrations and a series of assignments in still life, portraiture, fashion and product setups. Course accommodates digital cameras of 35mm and medium format. Prerequisite: Digital Photography II or equivalent experience.

Learn the basics of artistic photographic practice and apply them to documentary photojournalistic content. Using digital photography and a documentary approach, utilize content-driven visual storytelling to investigate subjects in the landscape or community. Class time includes critique, lectures, discussion and studio time.

Lectures and readings will cover the work of photographers using the documentary style, and you will create a final portfolio of images.

Students must provide their own DSLR cameras with manual control of shutter speed and aperture. Prerequisite: Digital Photography I, Digital Media for Photographers, Digital Photography II or equivalent experience.

This course is designed to provide you the opportunity to demonstrate the skills and knowledge you have learned in the Digital Photography Certificate program. Explore and analyze topics within the discipline of photography to meet your individually defined goals in coordination with and approved by the instructor. Assemble and present your body of work in a portfolio of images appropriate to your professional, educational or personal goals. PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY This unique course introduces a range of techniques including studio and lifestyle portraiture.

Through studio and location shoots, you will begin to understand the creative approaches necessary for taking great portraits. Direct and photograph models while exploring portrait composition, posing techniques and lighting setups. You are welcome to bring your own subjects to class to photograph. Additionally, each class session will include an examination and discussion of the masters in the field of portrait photography, as well as critiques of student work.

TYPOGRAPHY

WEB II - INTERMEDIATE: JAVASCRIPT + JQUERY

Through a series of applied design projects, this course stresses the importance of typography and design in visual communication. Study basic letterform anatomy, typographic contrast, characteristics of major type families and how to design words, sentences and paragraphs to visually communicate an idea. Develop your ability to create typographic layouts using the dynamics of a grid system as a design tool and to build an effective hierarchy. Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Design, Adobe InDesign or equivalent experience.

Expand upon your knowledge of HTML5 and CSS3 as you use JavaScript to create accessible and dynamic web content. In this class, expect to acquire advanced techniques and fluency for CSS and JavaScript/jQuery. Topics include interactive forms and collaborative web development through an introduction to server-side development. Prerequisite: Web I or equivalent experience.

WEB III - ADVANCED: RESPONSIVE DESIGN

USABILITY + USER EXPERIENCE

Web III continues the use of forward-looking technologies such as HTML5 + CSS3 while adding to your knowledge of advanced JavaScript, client-side development and cross-browser testing and compatibility. Using media queries and multiple layouts, you will create a complex website that works on phones, tablets, laptops and desktops across platforms and browsers.

Coursework combines design and development into a single cohesive workflow as you build a multipage website for a client, beginning with wireframes and technical specifications. You will create designs and mock-ups and go through a formal client review and revision process. Course topics rely heavily on lectures and critique as you work through your site. The result will be a complete marketing site for a client. Prerequisite: Web II or equivalent experience.

This course explores the user-centered design paradigm via readings, case studies and hands-on design experience, providing you with theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills to understand the user-centered web development process and to manage a web project from start to finish.

You will be exposed to the entire user-centered website design process, from planning and discovery to launch, promotion and maintenance.

Registration fees are nonrefundable. All withdrawals must be submitted in writing sent via email to CS@UARTS.EDU. The date the request is received in writing is the date used to calculate the refund amount.
