Hybrid Course Screenwriting – Developing the Script

Writing This American Life – Creative Nonfiction

No matter what stage you’re in, this course uses the workshop approach to help you ignite a new screenplay, make significant headway on one already in progress or finish a first-draft script. As a writer, you will “contract” to complete a specific step toward the development of your own screenplay. The overall goal is to make sure you have a strong movie premise, a clear genre, a treatment that tells the story well, an outline built on an exciting scene-by-scene sequence structure and a script that can be produced. Sessions include structural breakdowns of feature films, discussion of assigned readings, application of screenwriting techniques and pertinent exercises. You should be prepared to pitch your screenplay on the first night of class. The course may be repeated until a first-draft screenplay is completed.

Each week the award-winning Npr radio show This American Life explores a theme through the mostly true first-person stories of everyday people. This course guides you in writing creative nonfiction essays of your own. In addition to examining episodes of This American Life, podcasts of The Moth are also explored (available free online). You will complete reading assignments and write bi-weekly responses, as well as produce creative essays. Whether writing humor, narrative, personal essay or any combination of the three, generate new work and have your writing workshopped by the instructor and other students. Leave the class with at least two finished essays.

Whether you want to embark on a new career, increase your marketability in your current field or explore an area that excites your curiosity, the UArts certificate programs are the way to gain knowledge quickly, realize your creative vision and connect with others in the industry. Why should I consider a certificate program? With a certificate from UArts Continuing Education you can: • Position yourself for a promotion or market yourself to prospective employers • Start a new career • Update your skills through a focused, comprehensive educational experience • Study with excellent instructors drawn from the university, business and industry communities • Gain knowledge you can apply right away in a concentrated subject area in less time than it takes to earn an academic degree

What are the “Essentials” and “Professional” certificate programs? The Essentials and professional certificate programs utilize an industry-driven approach that stresses only the most current standards and latest trends. Shorter and at a lower cost than our other certificates, the Essentials programs give you the flexibility to concentrate on obtaining a solid foundation in Web design and/or Communication design before deciding to proceed to the more specialized and focused instruction of a professional certificate program.

Who may apply for a certificate program? Anyone with a high school diploma or equivalent may apply. A bachelor’s degree is helpful but not necessary.

I work during the day. Can I take classes in the evening? Yes! All certificate programs are offered in the evenings or on the weekend to accommodate those who work 9-to-5 jobs.

How do I apply? Complete the downloadable application form (cs.uarts.edu/ce/certificate-programs). Submit it with any required supporting materials and a nonrefundable $100 course fee. If you are denied acceptance to the program, you will be refunded $75. Applications are accepted yearround for all certificate programs. Courses start at the beginning of each semester.

Why choose to earn a UArts Continuing Education certificate? • Proven Track Record – UArts has a proven track record of providing top-quality training for creative professionals for more than 15 years.

• Learn Practical Skills Quickly – our curriculum is efficient and powerful. By focusing on practical knowledge and skills, you get top-notch instruction in a short period of time. Some programs can be completed in as little as one year. You can start taking classes at the beginning of any semester.

• Learn from Industry Professionals – We leverage world-class talent. All instructors are working professionals who have deep knowledge, hands-on experience and expert insights in the subjects they teach. Visit cs.uarts.edu/faculty.
