Who teaches the certificate courses? Our certificate courses are taught by talented art and design professionals. All work within the professional fields they teach.
Who may apply for a certificate program? Anyone with a high school diploma or equivalent may apply. A bachelor’s degree is helpful but not necessary.
How long does it take to complete a certificate program? Certificate programs vary in length. Some can be completed within an academic year. Of course, you can take classes to fit your schedule.
I work during the day. Can I take classes in the evening? Yes! All certificate programs are offered in the evenings or on the weekend to accommodate those who work 9-to-5 jobs.
When can I start a certificate program? The Teaching Artist Certificate must be started in the fall semester. You can begin all other certificate programs any semester.

How do I apply? Complete the downloadable application form (cs.uarts.edu/ce/certificate-programs). Submit it with any required supporting materials and a nonrefundable $100 course fee. If you are denied acceptance to the program, you will be refunded $75. Applications are accepted yearround for all certificate programs.
Do I receive an actual certificate? Yes. Your name, the name of your certificate program and the date of completion will be provided on the certificate.

Certificate students receive valuable benefits! UArts Student Photo ID Certificate students receive an official UArts photo ID for accessing UArts buildings and services. The ID also enables students to receive discounts at Philadelphia eateries, stores, entertainment and cultural venues – plus free admission to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Perelman Building and the Rodin Museum.
Software + Hardware Discounts Certificate students receive up to 80% off Adobe Creative Suite software purchased through the UArts bookstore and get discounts on hardware at the University of Pennsylvania’s Computer Connection store. Digital Storage Digital technology certificate students receive accounts in Media Temple, a web hosting platform, to be used for class assignments and projects.

Certificate Programs All new certificate program students are required to attend an orientation session where they will meet with advisors, instructors and other new students. Students enrolled in any digital technology certificate program will be required to complete up to three brief competency exams in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Students enrolled in either of the Communication Design certificate programs will also be required to complete a competency exam in Adobe InDesign. Results will be used to determine appropriate Adobe courses based on individual skill level. If results indicate sufficient proficiency, the student will not need to enroll in Adobe software courses. The certificate programs develop skills through sequential coursework. Please refer to specific course descriptions for a listing of prerequisites. The grids that follow take a closer look at the requirements for each certificate program and the reasons why you should participate.

Digital Technology Adobe Creative Suite Overview
Adobe Illustrator Workshop
Even if you have little to no background in Adobe’s suite of products, this course will teach you the fundamentals of Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Topics include image resolution, scanning, importing and exporting images, print setup, photo adjustments and vector usage. Basic typography and design will also be addressed. You can expect to gain a better understanding of how the three programs work together to create products for print or the web.
When it comes to designing web layouts, Adobe Illustrator allows you to move and resize elements quickly and intuitively. Illustrator is the industry standard for creating vector-based graphics such as logos and typography. It is also a rich supporting tool in creating page layouts prior to starting design. This workshop focuses on a practical overview of Adobe Illustrator’s interface, workspace, tools and techniques. It will provide the skills to create website layouts, graphics, icons and typographical graphics that add distinction and professionalism to any website or user interface.

Adobe Flash Lab This workshop shows you how rich media and animation created with Flash can effectively improve websites and web-based applications. Flash continues to be integrated into numerous websites in banners, graphics, ads and animations as well as complex navigation systems and media players. You will learn the Flash interface, files, tools and techniques including creating objects, animating them and using symbols and libraries to simplify construction. Adobe Photoshop Explore Photoshop through hands-on web-design exercises. Adobe Photoshop Workshop
Designing Effective Web Pages
Get acquainted with Adobe Photoshop, the must-have software for work with web graphics. Explore Photoshop through handson exercises focused on its use as a tool for web design. The workshop starts with an introduction to the Photoshop interface and tools and the types of files that are used for web graphics.
This course will build and expand on the design principles introduced in Foundations of Web Design + Development. You will learn to apply these principles and elements of design to develop thoughtful user interface, user experience and information architecture patterns for a website. Design topics include usability, action-driven design, typography for web and color theory. You will learn to analyze how users interact with websites, ads and applications and how to apply design in order to influence those interactions. This course focuses entirely on design, and you will use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator exclusively to design and refine a series of web projects. Adobe Photoshop Advanced Explore advanced techniques while focusing on the design process and professional production techniques Adobe Photoshop uses to achieve the most effective visual results. Ideal for those eager to continue exploring Photoshop, working with advanced layer techniques, gaining an understanding of how to use curves for image enhancement and learning to sharpen images for output. Explore several advanced Photoshop techniques, including seamless compositing and advanced layering techniques, portrait retouching, tool and palette customization and creative special effects for print, screen and the web. Capstone Projects Communication + Web Design Certificate Focus on expanding your design skills and refining your problem-solving abilities through advanced application of the design process. Work on a project, producing graphics and a website for a real-world client of your selection. Manage print design pieces from concept to completion, creating a logo, brochure and package design, and develop and build a website that complements and enhances your print media. Photography Adobe Lightroom – Shoot + Edit Workshop This two-day photo workshop focused on shooting and editing demonstrates the complete photographic process. The instructor will work with the group while shooting, answer questions, help with settings and equipment issues and offer tips on composition, perspective, exposure and lighting. On the first day you will meet in a computer lab for a focused introduction to Adobe Lightroom. Digital Photography I
Experimental Photography
Explore the fundamental principles, techniques and application of digital camera-based image making. Learn how to capture images, including exposure settings for aperture, shutter speed, metering, color and light balance, with an emphasis on developing strong composition, lighting and manual techniques. This course employs a mixture of lectures, demonstrations, assignments, field trips, critiques and an awareness of the critical issues in contemporary photography. You must have your own digital camera with adjustable exposure and focus (ability to capture in “camera RAW” preferred). By combining digital technology and traditional photography, students learn the hands-on techniques of contact printing in two of the oldest photographic printing processes: cyanotype + gum bichromate printing, which were popular in the 19th century and produce unique results. Students work with photosensitive solutions that can be hand-applied to numerous natural fiber surfaces such as artist’s papers, fabrics and wood. Traditional film and digital negatives are placed upon the coated surface during exposure to strong light to create beautiful prints. Students explore cyanotype to produce images in rich shades of blue before working in the gum bichromate process where they work with photosensitized watercolor pigment, producing prints that are a beautifully luminous combination of painting and photography. Prerequisite: Digital Photography II or equivalent experience.

Street Photography
Studio Photography
Street photography is a type of candid, documentary photography practiced by such luminaries as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Garry Winogrand, Roy DeCarava, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, William Klein, Helen Levitt, Lisette Model, Weegee and others. These photographers documented the drama, turbulence, exoticism and humanity of the great American metropolis as they pushed the constraints of composition, rarely relying on pre-visualization. A skilled street photographer is able to anticipate action, interaction and that attosecond when the ordinary street scene becomes an extraordinary photograph. Students study the work of many of the noted photographers above, examine contemporary street photography and immerse themselves in the whirl of street life in Philadelphia as they understand what it takes to capture successful street photographs. Emphasizing creative solutions to complex photographic problems, this course is designed for those interested in discovering the versatility and creative potential of the studio environment. Learn how controlled studio lighting, both electronic flash and tungsten sources, enhance a photograph. Explore traditional bookbinding and book structure techniques using a variety of materials and tools. Investigate different styles and use of an assortment of papers and book construction methods including accordion, Japanese stab, pamphlet stitch, long stitch and Coptic to create unique handmade books. You can also use hand-stamping and other non-press techniques to develop imagery for your books.
This course assists you in developing both technical and conceptual drawing and painting skills in a studio environment. You will have the opportunity to work both in drawing and painting, or focus in just one area based on personal interest. Introduction to Offset Printing Offset printing is a technique in which the inked image is transferred or “offset” from a plate to a rubber blanket, then to the printing surface. Woodworking Staack Moore Woodworking at 2828 Victoria Street in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia, occupies the entire first floor of a 15,000-squarefoot building originally built to repair railroad cars. The professionally equipped facility has multiple workstations and a production studio outfitted with modern tools and equipment. This facility provides an open floor plan with machinery in a central location and workbenches in a separate area. The studio has easy access to I-95 and Home Depot. Platen Press Printmaking Workshop The platen press was the press of choice for the last 120 years by most letterpress printers. With its big flywheel, this press is very different from flatbed presses and provides a new experience to students. Learn some basics of typography as well as imagery, covering topics such as setting, type form lockup and registration, proper procedures for inking, preparing paper and the safe operation of the press. No previous letterpress experience is necessary, but those with some letterpress experience eager to refresh their skills are particularly well suited to the content. Screen Printing This course approaches screen printing as a mode of expression and concentrates on techniques and experimentation in a fine art context. A range of screen printing techniques are covered, from image generation issues and screen preparation, to the use of screen printing as a creative medium. Develop a portfolio of prints that emphasizes personal content and advanced techniques. The course consists of studio production, lectures, demonstrations and critiques. You are encouraged to bring photographic, computer-generated, hand-drawn or appropriated images to the first class session. Hybrid Course Screenwriting – Developing the Script No matter what stage you’re in, this course uses the workshop approach to help you ignite a new screenplay, make significant headway on one already in progress or finish a first-draft script. As a writer, you will “contract” to complete a specific step toward the development of your own screenplay. The overall goal is to make sure you have a strong movie premise, a clear genre, a treatment that tells the story well, an outline built on an exciting scene-by-scene sequence structure and a script that can be produced. Sessions include structural breakdowns of feature films, discussion of assigned readings, application of screenwriting techniques and pertinent exercises. You should be prepared to pitch your screenplay on the first night of class. The course may be repeated until a first-draft screenplay is completed. Note: This is a hybrid course, with writers spending half their class time on campus and the other half online. Participants post weekly writing output online in preparation for meetings in which peers respond and the instructor gives personalized feedback on genre, character development, story structure, conflict, emotional arc, dialogue and cinematic format. REGISTRATION We accept registration by fax, by mail, in person or online at cs.uarts.edu/ce. We do not accept registration over the telephone. To register, you must submit the completed registration form with payment in full. Payment may be made in the form of a check or money order payable to: The University of the Arts. Credit cards – American Express, MasterCard and Visa – are also accepted. Registration is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. The University reserves the right to deny registration to any student based upon the student’s prior behavior or actions in a previous class, program or workshop at the University. Additionally, any current student may be dismissed from his/her class and the program if found to be disruptive or behaving inappropriately in class or on the University campus. Students dismissed from any UArts Continuing Studies program will be denied admission to future terms and programs. Students in the Division of Continuing Studies are expected to adhere to a Student Code of Conduct available on our website. TUITION + FEES Tuition Tuition in Continuing Education at the University of the Arts is listed underneath each course in this brochure. Courses are available for credit and non-credit. Fees Course fees vary by class and are applied to the specific operational costs incurred by activities in certain classes, studios or labs. Payment of fees mentioned in course descriptions is required at the time of registration and is nonrefundable. Students may need to purchase other materials at their own expense in addition to those provided; supply lists will be available online one week prior to the start of classes. THIRD-PARTY BILLING + SPONSORED STUDENTS Third-party billing is when a company or government/outside agency has established special billing arrangements to cover tuition and/or fees for students that it sponsors. Third-party billing can only be used for credit courses. REFUND POLICY All refunds are less nonrefundable deposits and fees and are calculated as follows: Classes (5 or more sessions) • 100% refund less the $50 nonrefundable application fee for withdrawal five business days prior to the first class • 80% refund less the $50 nonrefundable application fee for withdrawal fewer than five business days prior to the first class • 50% refund less the $50 nonrefundable application fee for withdrawal between the first and second class • 0% refund after the scheduled meeting of the second class Weekend Workshops • 100% refund less the $50 nonrefundable application fee for withdrawal five business days prior to the workshop • 0% refund for withdrawal within fewer than five business days prior to the workshop Course fees are nonrefundable. All withdrawals must be submitted in writing sent via email to cs@uarts.edu. The date the request is received in writing is the date used to calculate the refund amount. Please allow up to 10 business days for processing. Note: It is not our policy to transfer registration from one course to another or one semester to another. Requests of this nature will be processed as a withdrawal, subject to the refund policy above.
COURSE CANCELLATION The University of the Arts reserves the right to cancel classes due to low enrollment. If a cancellation should occur, students will be notified prior to the start of classes and will have the option of taking another course or receiving a full refund. TUITION DISCOUNTS Discounts must be calculated and reflected in payment at the time of registration; no refunds will be issued retroactively to correct overpayment. Alumni Graduates of the University of the Arts, Philadelphia College of Art and Design, Philadelphia College of Performing Arts and recipients of Continuing Education Certificates (excluding the Essentials certificates) are entitled to a 25% discount on tuition only. The discount is an increase from 10% to enhance benefits for alumni and to encourage them to take advantage of the University’s rich variety of continuing education and professional development opportunities. Note: Alumni discounts are only recognized with online registration if you have previously registered online for a class using an alumni discount. American Institute of Architects (AIA) Members of AIA are entitled to a 15% discount on tuition only. Supply lists will be available online one week prior to the start of classes and can be accessed by selecting the Syllabus link on the individual course page. FreedomPay Cash, check and credit cards are not accepted through the University’s departmental resale programs. Materials such as metals, clay and various tools must be purchased with a FreedomPay card. Students wishing to use the University’s Imaging Lab for print output should also get a FreedomPay card. You can activate an account directly with FreedomPay and fund it with cash, an electronic bank account withdrawal or a credit or debit card. ATTENDANCE All students are expected to attend classes regularly and promptly and for the duration of the scheduled instructional time. Individual instructors will decide the optimum time for taking attendance and may penalize for habitual lateness or absence. Repeated absences may result in a grade of “F” for a course. Students who withdraw from a course must do so in writing. Non-attendance does not constitute an official withdrawal. ONLINE + HYBRID COURSES Online and hybrid courses have the same learning objectives and use the same faculty and curriculum as our traditional “live” courses, with the added benefit of convenience. Participants have 24/7 access to course materials and can work at their own pace any time of day. Distance education is not for everyone. Students wishing to enroll in online and hybrid courses must meet the following minimum requirements: • Access to a computer with a web browser, Microsoft Office or equivalent and Adobe Acrobat Reader • High-speed Internet access • Comfort working on computers, including saving, deleting and moving files • Ability to install software, as needed Students in online and hybrid courses are required to participate in weekly discussions and complete all projects and assignments indicated in the syllabus. Note: Students in online and hybrid courses will receive an invitation to join the online classroom one week prior to the start of class. Obtaining Grades Continuing Education students may obtain their final course grades online through WebAdvisor at MyUArts Record. The University Registrar produces transcripts for all graduate and undergraduate programs, Continuing Education, Professional Institute for Educators and non-matriculated coursework. In order to process a transcript request, the student’s account must be in good financial standing. An official transcript may be requested at uarts.edu/academics/registrar#Transcript. Incomplete grades require prior approval of the instructor and the Dean of the College. A “Request for Grade of Incomplete” form, signed by the Dean, must be submitted to the office of the Registrar for each “I” grade assigned.
