Sean Flaherty

Animation Character Development Sketchbooks: Experiments + Field Notes

Allison Park, PA Hampton High School

PRE-COLLEGE SUMMER INSTITUTE 2018 18

Living solely in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Sean Flaherty (B. 2001) is an abstract digital artist who primarily focuses on deep, intricate, and cryptic narratives. Such narratives are told in the form of various art pieces, such as audio reactive visual performances, vintage, “found footage” style films, abstract paintings, digital art, poetry, and photography. The story being told does not necessarily confine itself to a single medium. Various different media tell a different character arc, piece of lore, or act in an interactive narrative, intertwining fine arts and alternate reality game attributes. Sean Flaherty’s best works are usually told with coming of age elements and themes of universal acceptance; not only of those oppressed, but for forgiveness of the oppressors as well. Flaherty is a firm believer in the philosophy that hate cannot be fought with more hate. Acceptance is hate’s natural opposite, and while fear and offense, whether it be physical or verbal, is a temporary measure to shut others down, their hate will only grow in silence, until silence cannot bear any more.

Highland Park, NJ Highland Park High School Katia Giovannetti has been creating as young as she can remember. In whatever medium, she covers a broad range of technique and style. Her preferred mediums are film and fashion design. In both, she likes to capture real subjects in what she observes. Real life is not often depicted as realistic as it could be, and Katia Giovannetti aims to change that. Not only does her inspiration come from what is observed, but what is experienced. Giovannetti suffers from Attention Deficit Disorder. Growing up with this adversity influenced her to channel this frustration and isolation into art. Katia Giovannetti’s artwork can focus on the beauty of the world and life in times of struggle. Whether it’s the inherited slavic stubborn nature or the political climate she grew up in, her work sometimes can touch on rebellion and free thinking. Giovannetti notes that her tight knit family is what inspires the nature of her work the most. Her grandparents roots of immigration from Italy and Croatia inspires her ethic to be hardworking. Masterman which he attended from 2012 to 2015. He is now a senior at Science Leadership Academy and currently resides with his mother and father in Philadelphia, where he rarely leaves his room. From a young age, Ethan expressed a notable interest in the arts, specifically drawing various animals with a particular preference for prehistoric life. Though he began at a young age, Ethan still has many of the same artistic weaknesses he expressed as a child. The most notable of these being his avoidance of adding color whenever possible. This fits a general trend of shying away from using permanent materials in his pieces, though he has gotten much more comfortable with inking, so there’s hope. Ethan’s main influence tends to be whichever piece of media he’s most recently enjoyed, though he has a special place for the works of J.R.R. My name is Fred Schachinger and I am from Phoenixville, PA. I am 16 years old. I am majoring in Animation this summer, as I want to learn how to bring my drawings and filmmaking ideas to life. My interest in the arts is focused on animation, as I enjoy the art of live action films, but making them is always more frustrating than it needs to be for me. My ideas are never fully captured. I’ve found that in animation, the possibilities are endless, and you can literally draw the exact image in your head. My goal as an artist is to create visually interesting films that are not over the top and have a simple message that people can relate to and hopefully appreciate.

Kasey Taffe

Animation Character Development Screenprinting

Philadelphia, PA Philadelphia High School Girls My name is Kasey Taffe, and my pieces mainly focus on humanoid creatures. These are usually drawn in one of two ways; simplistic with colorful outlines and colored in with a singular color (a lighter version of said outline), and detailed work, with multiple colors and dark outlines. Most of my pieces are usually made digitally, using my finger to draw on my iPad, but occasionally I use sketchbooks to house my art, colored pencils being my go-to coloring utensil. If I choose to tell a story through my art, it is most likely an event that took place in whatever character I draw’s life. I incorporate this story through either fitting song lyrics, vague symbolism, or comic book-esque paneling.
