Saturday arts lab The Saturday Arts Lab in the Division of Continuing Studies at the University of the Arts provides educational opportunities in the visual arts – drawing, two-and three-dimensional design – and technology for students in grades K-8. Classes are taught by exemplary arts educators who are also practicing artists, with additional support provided by student teachers from the University’s Art Education Department. Class sizes are limited to facilitate individualized instruction.

All classes are 10 am – 12 pm • Tuition is $100 per course
Students are welcome and encouraged to repeat courses. Each term will focus on a different theme of interest, and class projects and exercises will change to reflect the theme.
Imagination Discovery SLS 001 | Grades K-2 The most important aspects of this class are exploration, discovery and individual creativity. No matter what level of skill or experience, children are given the time, encouragement and help they need with each step of the creative process. Handson projects inspire and develop each student’s unique imagination while allowing independent thinking and decision making.
Creative Exploration SLS 002 | Grades 2-3 This studio experience focuses on fundamental art concepts and skills in drawing, design, painting, collage and construction. Young imaginations find unique opportunities for experimentation and creative expression in exciting, two-and threedimensional projects.
Communicating Through the Arts SLS 003 | Grades 3-4 This class emphasizes problem solving, an academic approach to drawing and includes an innovative design component. Studio activities include drawing, bookmaking, painting, illustration and constructing three-dimensional architectural models.
Visual Expression SLS 004 | Grades 4-5
NEW! Digital Photography SLS 011 | Grades 5-8 Fall Semester Only In this class, students learn about composition, exposure and lighting to create inventive digital photographs. Topics include shooting, camera functions and image storage. Cameras will be provided for use during class time.
NEW! Ceramics SLS 012 | Grades 5-8 Spring Semester Only Students explore different types of clay and building techniques by making functional and/or sculptural ceramic works. Projects may include tile making, coil building, clay slab construction and wheel throwing techniques.
Portfolio Development – Painting + Printmaking SLS 008 | Grades 6-8 This course covers both basic relief printing and acrylic painting methods while students work with a variety of subject matter, ranging from still life to figure, landscape, cityscape and abstraction. Students have the opportunity to develop portfolio pieces necessary for high school entry.
Characters + Cartoons SLS 007 | Grades 7-8
This course focuses on studio experiences that stimulate and develop young artists’ creative imagination, expression and skills. The fall semester emphasizes art forms such as drawing, painting, collage and collaborative projects. Spring semester students explore processes and materials including drawing and traditional mosaics.
This course focuses on the development of storytelling in cartoons and comics as well as introduces students to the basic techniques and skills of drawing people in their environment. Students experiment with various materials and explore the use of color within a cartoon and comic book. Students also have the opportunity to create their own 3-D characters using Munny Dolls.
NEW! Computer Art SLS 013 | Grades 4-6
Creative Technology SLS 009 | Grades 7-8
This class introduces students to the basics of using computer technology to make imaginative and meaningful artwork. Class projects focus on the use of Adobe programs such as Photoshop.
This course introduces students to computer design by learning the best ways to make art using Adobe Photoshop and InDesign while exploring layout, design and digital imagery.
Cartooning SLS 010 | Grades 5-6 This course is an introduction to the basics of comics and cartooning through drawing and storytelling. Classroom exercises focus on drawing people, as students use an array of media to turn their creative ideas into interesting characters and environments.

Registration + Space Availability NEW! ONLINE REGISTRATION! Online registration is now available for Saturday Arts Lab students. Visit cs.uarts.edu/sal to register now. Note that online registration is NOT available for scholarship applicants. Visit cs.uarts.edu/sal/scholarships for more information and to download an application. We also accept registration by fax, by mail, in person or online. We do not accept registration over the telephone. To register, you must submit a completed registration form with payment in full. Registration is accepted on a first come, first served basis. We regret that we cannot hold a space for a student without receiving all materials, including tuition and fees. We do not maintain a waiting list for our classes.
Registration Deadline The deadline for registration is the first day of classes, space permitting. Courses fill quickly, so be sure to register early and include a second and third choice on the registration form if applicable.
Tuition + Fees The $100 tuition for each course includes a $25 nonrefundable application fee. Students who receive a scholarship are still responsible for paying the $25 nonrefundable application fee. A $25 fee will be charged for any returned checks.
Admission + Dismissal Policies The University of the Arts reserves the right to deny registration to any student based upon the student’s prior behavior or actions in a previous class, program or workshop at the University. Additionally, any current student may be dismissed from his/her class and the program if found to be disruptive or behaving inappropriately in class or on the University campus. Students dismissed from any UArts Pre-College program will be denied admission to future terms and programs. Students in the Division of Continuing Studies are expected to adhere to a Student Code of Conduct available on our website: cs.uarts.edu/sal/policies
Payment Payment must be received in full at the time of registration. Students whose accounts reflect a balance of anything other than $0.00 will not be permitted to attend class; payment plans are not available. Payment may be made either in the form of a check or money order made payable to: The University of the Arts, or by credit card – American Express, MasterCard and Visa are accepted. We do not accept cash payments. Registration forms and payment should be mailed to Pre-College Programs, The University of the Arts, 320 S. Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19102.
Refund Policy • 100% tuition refund less the $25 nonrefundable application fee for withdrawal one week before the start of class. Course fees are nonrefundable. • 80% tuition refund less the $25 nonrefundable application fee for withdrawal the week classes begin. Course fees are nonrefundable. • 50% tuition refund less the $25 nonrefundable application fee for withdrawal between the first and second class. Course fees are nonrefundable. • No refunds will be permitted after the second class has met. All withdrawals must be submitted in writing via fax (215.717.6538) or email (precollege@uarts.edu). The date the request is received in writing is the date used to calculate the refund amount. Please allow up to 10 business days for processing. Please note: All scholarship discounts must be calculated and reflected in payment made at the time of registration; no refunds will be issued to correct overpayment.
Changing Courses It is not our policy to transfer registration from one course to another. Requests for a change/ switch of course will be processed as a withdrawal, subject to the Saturday Arts Lab refund policy above.
Course Cancellation The University of the Arts reserves the right to cancel classes due to low enrollment. If a cancellation should occur, students will be notified prior to the start of the classes and will have the option of taking another course or receiving a full refund.
Snow Days In the event of inclement weather, contact the UArts Continuing Studies general information line at 215.717.6006 or visit our website at cs.uarts.edu to determine whether classes have been cancelled. There will be a recorded message after 8:30 am on Saturdays only if there is a cancellation. No refunds or make-up classes will be scheduled as a result of a cancellation.
Scholarships Thanks to the generous support of the TD Charitable Foundation, a limited number of scholarships are available. Call Pre-College Programs at 215.717.6430 or visit our website at cs.uarts.edu/sal/scholarships for full details and an application form. Students must apply for scholarships at the time of registration. Scholarships applicants cannot register online. Students who are already registered for a Saturday Arts Lab course will be ineligible for a scholarship for that term and retroactive refunds will not be processed. Students who receive a scholarship are still responsible for paying the $25 nonrefundable application fee.
