To be a successful actor, you must learn how to navigate the audition. Gain critical feedback that will guide you through the entire audition preparation process—from selecting a script and doing a character breakdown, to rehearsal and prepping for the day-of.
Bring the characters from your imagination to life—in 3-D. Using modeling tools and sculpture techniques, you’ll learn to design characters in clay for use in stop-motion animation, as reference material for illustrations or animation projects, and as standalone artworks.

This acrylic painting course emphasizes experimentation and material exploration. Consider psychological influences and imaginative approaches to creating paintings.
Conjuring up a plot is one thing; executing it effectively is another. Learn the elements and subtleties that transform thoughts and observations into enduring writing. Through a series of exercises in form, content, building characters and developing settings, you’ll learn how to make the stories you imagine come alive.

Creative Writing: Spoken Word Poetry Learn to craft insightful and effective spoken word poems. Examine the work of contemporary poets working in oral traditions, while honing your voice and exploring rhythm, wordplay, intonation and improvisation. Quality cinematography is as vital to a film as its director and cast. Learn to craft shots and scenes critically, with the right combination of composition, lighting and movement. This course emphasizes visual storytelling, creating mood and evoking emotion.
Learn basic sewing skills, pattern-making processes and dyeing processes. Working backward from an existing garment you love, you’ll reproduce its pattern to design a similar piece. You’ll also manipulate patterns, utilize drafting changes and work with found material.

Focus on current modes of film directing and execution using state-of-the-art equipment and software. Develop a group project from script to casting, rehearsals, shooting and postproduction. Learn how to communicate with actors, so the characters you envision come alive as you begin to explore your personal themes as a director.
Create and construct exciting fashion and garment designs by manipulating textile surface and material exploration. From dyeing to embroidery to sewing machine drawing, add color, dimension or pattern to an existing garment while improving your sewing machine skills.

Drawing is the most basic art and design tool, and it is a fundamental component of all creative disciplines. Instruction will focus on drawing from life, including still life, nude figure models and landscape. Working in classical media such as pencil, charcoal and ink, you’ll develop essential observational skills and several works suitable for a portfolio. offered in fall & spring

Work from nude and costumed models, as well as scenery and setups designed to help you get a better grasp on human anatomy, gesture, expression, structure and illusion. Gain an understanding of both hand-drawn and digital processes for visually articulating ideas and meaning in comics, children’s books, advertising, editorial and other applications. offered in fall

Illustration: Setting the Scene Learn to develop believable worlds by studying atmosphere, perspective and illusion through the outdoor architecture, urban landscapes and indoor spaces of Philadelphia. This course takes place primarily off-campus, in public spaces and historic structures located around Old City, Center City and elsewhere. Work onsite in various media, including pen, watercolor, markers and toned papers to create sketches and sustained drawings. Prior drawing experience is recommended. offered in spring

Jewelry Design Design and construct original metal jewelry, gaining a hands-on knowledge of metalsmithing and other jewelry techniques in the process. Explore piercing, soldering, riveting, stone setting and finishing using silver, bronze and copper. offered in spring

Learn the language of one of the oldest and most enduring art and design tools. Explore acrylic painting techniques such as surface preparation, paint application, mediums, color mixing and composition. Move past your camera’s automatic mode to take your photos to the next level. Learn the fundamentals of photography— aperture, shutter speed, ISO, lenses and depth of field—while digging into composition, light, color and tone to create dynamic images. offered in fall & spring

Portfolio Preparation Critically evaluate and enhance your visual arts college application portfolio. Work with a variety of 2-D media to create four to six new works, with a focus on observational drawing. Review your portfolio with a UArts admission counselor to assess its strengths and areas for improvement. This course is open to high school juniors and seniors. Nude figure models will be used.
Street Photography Capture the city’s spirit with your lens. Explore camera control on walking trips to local Philadelphia parks, markets and galleries, where you’ll transform the conventional into the exceptional and fine-tune your distinct perspective of the world around you. Screenwriting An engaging screenplay is essential to a compelling movie. Explore industry terminology, character development, scene building, story structure and the importance of conflict. Through screenings, class discussions and exercises, learn how to create a story for the screen, write a detailed outline and draft a short screenplay. offered in spring

Screen Printing Grasp the basics of screen printing, from setup and screen prep to image transferring and printing. Learn to screenprint posters, zines, bags, apparel and more. This empowering course will give you the tools to print your imagery, pattern, logo or message on items of your choice. offered in spring
Vases & Vessels: Clay Learn the basics of constructing 3-D objects in clay. Work with clay and focus on handbuilding, including slab work, coiling, scoring and pinching. Explore surface techniques and glazing methods to design and create several functional vessel forms and other sculptural ceramic works. offered in fall

Visual Storytelling Learn how to use images and visual elements to communicate ideas and tell stories more effectively. Create stories and concept drawings that showcase your visual voice for use in a portfolio or future project. This class is perfect for students interested in film, animation, illustration, photography, writing, graphic design, game design or any form of visual storytelling. offered in fall

Learn to use your sketchbook as a visual journal for observation and invention to develop your creative voice. You’ll bind your own sketchbook and fill its pages with experiments that generate new ideas. Projects and demos include working with paint pens, markers, ink and cut paper, and field trips to various sites in Philadelphia encourage you to work from both observation and your imagination.
Get an overview of the properties and possibilities for wood, and discover contemporary applications for woodworking. You’ll learn basic carpentry techniques, woodshop safety and proper use of woodworking tools. Open-ended projects encourage you to explore design ideas while gaining useful technical skills.

Other Opportunities for High School Students The Pre-College Summer Institute at UArts offers programs in Art, Media & Design, Creative Writing, Dance, Jazz, Music Industry and Theater for creative high schoolers. Students gain college-level training while working with UArts’ expert visual, writing and performing arts faculty. Residential and commuter options are available for programs beginning in July 2020. Saturday School students receive a 10% returning student tuition discount. Summer Institute students earn college credit.

The cost of each Saturday School class is $415 (includes $400 tuition + $15 nonrefundable registration fee).
Students are eligible to receive only one discount or scholarship per semester. Discounts and scholarships are applied to the cost of tuition only, and must be calculated at the time of registration; no refunds will be issued to correct overpayment.
