The University of Utah’s College of Mines and Earth Sciences provides an exceptional environment for aspiring scientists and engineers to combine science and engineering for practical applications! Through our four different departments, Atmospheric Sciences, Geology & Geophysics, Metallurgical Engineering, and Mining Engineering, we provide our students with the opportunity to go beyond the classroom to explore our earth.
Atmospheric Sciences Atmospheric scientists use a wide variety of observational and computer-modeling tools to study the physics, dynamics, and chemistry of the earth’s atmosphere.
geology & Geophysics Earth scientists apply the principles of chemistry, physics, mathematics, and biology to understand the composition, structure, and history of the Earth and the processes that govern them.
metallurgical engineering Metallurgical engineers transform minerals into metal and metals into diverse products that we use every day. Life without metals would not be possible.
mining engineering Mining engineers recover mineral commodities from the earth safely, economically, and sustainably to meet the demand of the global community.
Here at the College of Mines and Earth Sciences, we know that the first step to exploration is taking advantage of the opportunities in front of you. We provide students with a variety of different opportunities to help you start exploring.
The College of MInes and Earth Sciences has a wide range of student clubs and organizations that help you interact with your fellow students, attend different events throughout the year, and get the most out of your college experience! Some of our student groups include, The Ute Weather Center, Inclusive Earth, Society of Exploration Geophyscists (SEG), Society for Mining, Metallurgy, & Exploration (SME), and Women in Mining (WIM).
Students in “The Oceans (GEO 3800) explore water chemistry, ecology, and shoreline processes on the Great Salt Lake-our local oceanic analog.
Considerable financial support is available to students in the College of Mines and Earth Sciences. Scholarship award amounts vary from $500 to $2,000+ and are based on various factors, including: academic standing, field of study, financial need, life situation, and community or university involvement. In addition to the College, departmental scholarships are awarded annually. Scholarship information can be found on our website www.cmes.utah.edu.
We are proud to have some of the most active students on campus. Our College encourages adventure, discovery, and knowledge through participation in field work, research projects, laboratory experiments, and summer internships. These experiences, both in and out of the classroom, help students emerge as leaders and prepare them for diverse careers in the earth sciences.
