Program in Intellectual Property & Technology Law The S.J. Quinney College of Law’s nationally ranked Program in Intellectual Property and Technology Law offers students a full range of intellectual property courses as well as a J.D. certificate in intellectual property law. The program also supports innovative research, community outreach, and policy initiatives relating to intellectual property law, innovation theory, science and technology policy, and related fields.
COURSE OFFERINGS Intellectual property course offerings include core topics such as copyright, patent, and trademark law, intellectual property transactions, and law and biomedicine. Additional courses relevant to the practice of intellectual property law include antitrust, health law, bankruptcy, taxation, data privacy, entrepreneurship law, and art, entertainment and sports law. Course offerings are subject to change.

COMPETITIONS AND EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING Students can participate in a range of IP-related competitions and experiential learning opportunities. Competitions include the AIPLA Giles S. Rich Moot Court Competition and the National Patent Application Drafting Competition, both of which are offered as credit-bearing courses, and the annual Bench2Bedside competition, hosted by the University of Utah Center for Medical Innovation. Students can also take advantage of a variety of externship placements relating to technology, health and intellectual property law.
FACULTY Our IP faculty are engaged in a range of research and scholarly activities that seek to advance our understanding of intellectual property law, how it affects innovation and markets, and how intellectual property practices can be improved.
