“UVM has always been a place I’ve felt comfortable calling home,” says Christopher Thomas Veal ’14, now a first-year medical student in the university’s Larner College of Medicine. As a senior biochemistry major, he presented his research at academic medical conferences in Florence, Italy, and at Harvard University. After graduating, Veal was accepted at five medical schools across the country—and he chose to stay in Vermont. As an undergraduate, he had developed a relationship with the medical school through research and through founding a chapter of the Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students. That “established commitment to diversity and inclusion made it easy to stay here,” he says.

It was a summer in Moquegua, Peru, conducting field research with Professor Deborah Blom that cemented for Katherine Golde ’15 an interest in applied anthropology—and in gaining an international perspective. Today, she’s pursuing a master’s degree in medical anthropology in Edinburgh, Scotland, a program she chose for its focus on global health. Joe Maser ’15 worked with NASA on his senior project. As a lead mechanical design engineer for Goldman Copeland Associates in Manhattan, he’s continuing to find solutions for specialized environmental conditions, addressing hospitals’ ventilation and filtration needs for operating rooms, infectious disease isolation rooms, and emergency departments.

Welcomed into a lab as a first-year student, Katie Bashant ’16 spent hours each week working side-by-side with Dr. Ralph Budd, conducting cellular research to shed light on Lyme arthritis and the immune system. The experience was key to her post-graduation success as a National Institutes of Health OxfordCambridge Scholar, which has allowed her to pursue an accelerated doctoral degree in immunology. Hands-on experiences like this not only reinforce lessons of the classroom, they’re the building blocks for first resumés and graduate school applications, ensuring that students are prepared for success after UVM.
