Academic Distinction and Cords __________________________________________________ Gold cords signify academic honors. Red, white and blue cords honor those who serve in the United States armed forces, and the red and white cords signify those who serve in the Royal Canadian armed forces. A green sash signifies a master’s degree graduate. University of Western States recognizes doctor of chiropractic students with the following honors: • Summa cum laude – GPA of 3.85 - 4.00 • Magna cum laude – GPA of 3.75 - 3.84 • Cum laude – GPA of 3.50 - 3.74 College of Graduate Studies students with a cumulative grade point average of 3.95 - 4.00 at the time of graduation receive an honors distinction.

Academic Regalia __________________________________________________ The gowns and hoods worn are part of an academic tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages. During that period, the loose-fitting academic gowns, which today are merely decorative, served a useful purpose - to keep warm in the drafty and unheated stone buildings of the medieval university. Academic gowns in the United States today are usually black. The unadorned bachelor’s gown is the simplest in design. The master’s gown is more ample with a half-sleeve. The doctoral gown has a more generous cut and is distinguished by a velvet facing (or panels on the front) and three velvet chevrons on the sleeve. The velvet may be black, or it may reflect the color of the wearer’s degree. The doctoral gown is differentiated by the hood. The choice and arrangement of the bright, rich colors on each doctoral hood tells a specific story. The velvet trim around the edge is the color assigned to the field in which the candidate is earning a degree. Health care professions use the color green. The linings are the school colors from which the degree was earned. These centuries-old customs provide a reminder that while commencement points to the future, it is also a culmination of past traditions.

University of Western States Oath __________________________________________________ I, (state your name), take this oath as a graduate of University of Western States. I will respect the dignity and protect the confidences of those I serve. I will uphold the highest professional, ethical and moral standards in all of my actions. I dedicate myself to the promotion of health, the prevention of illness and the alleviation of suffering. I will collaborate with other health care professionals to promote health and wellness. I will continue learning throughout my life so that I may provide for the good of those I serve. I commit myself to caring for others, regardless of their means, with compassion, honesty and integrity. May these principles guide, strengthen and inspire me. (So help me God.)**

**Graduates may choose whether or not they wish to state “So help me God, at the end of the oath.
