President’s Message 2021 was a year of continued transition for University of Western States. After relocating our entire campus and clinic operations in 2020, this past year we expanded our academic program offerings, initiated transformational curricular revisions, and implemented a new state-of-theart online learning platform. And, we navigated the impacts of a global pandemic. We engaged the entire campus community in gatherings dedicated to listening to each other, exploring opportunities to grow and thrive, and imagining our future as the premier integrated health education institution. While we must adapt to unexpected change, we seek to create our own brilliant destiny. Tomorrow’s solutions arise from fresh ideas and creative innovations. We approach this adventure with ongoing commitment to diversity and equity, and upholding our core values of student focus, professionalism, best practices, whole-person health, curiosity and inclusivity. I look forward to sharing with you the fruits of these developments as they are realized.

OPEN HOUSE Our new campus is located in the vibrant Madison South neighborhood of Portland, Oregon, at Tillamook Street and NE 82nd Ave. The contemporary campus facilities offer students enhanced learning spaces, with an advanced clinic space that is home to our Connected Whole Health clinic.

I am excited to invite you to our Campus Open House to be held on Saturday, April 23, 2022. Doors open at 12 p.m. We are hosting an interactive Health and Well-Being Fair to highlight the UWS clinic services. There will be guided tours of campus, along with information about UWS educational programs and our community services. I invite you to join us for this event. If you are unable to come in person, please enjoy a virtual tour via a video with information about the campus. We are pleased to honor the partnerships and the generous donors of all who have helped make the new UWS campus possible. 2021 UWS Alumnus of the Year Daniel Murphy, DC

aniel Murphy, DC, DABCO, is the 2021 University of Western States (UWS) 2021 Alumnus of the Year. This distinction recognizes and honors the accomplishments of outstanding UWS graduates as they advance the science and art of integrated health care. Dr. Murphy’s professional and scholarly work has demonstrated exemplary leadership for the chiropractic profession and embodies the core values of UWS – student focus, best practices, curiosity, inclusiveness, professionalism and whole-person health.

“It is truly an honor to be named the 2021 UWS Alumnus of the Year,” said Dr. Murphy. “My education at Western States opened my eyes to a world of never-ending possibilities for both academic and clinical excellence, allowing me to create a career and life that has helped me to make a difference.” Dr. Murphy graduated magna cum laude from UWS in 1978, and pursued post-graduate education culminating in board certification in orthopedics. He has been a part-time professor for 40 years and has led more than 2,000

6

postgraduate continuing education seminars. From 2003 – 2009 he served as the vice president of the International Chiropractors Association (ICA) and was honored as ICA Chiropractor of the Year in 2009. Dr. Murphy’s passion for chiropractic care began when he accompanied his mother, who was battling stage four lung cancer at the age of 44, to her medical appointments. “Her prognosis was very grim, and she was told that she would not see her 45th birthday,” said Dr. Murphy. “We went all over to a variety of alternative healers – Estes Park in Colorado; Belen, FELLOW NOMINEES: New Mexico; Winthrop, Marina Prodanovic, DC Washington; Tijuana, Mexico; Owen Lynch, DC Texas; New York City; and Farrell James, DC more. intervention, his mother lived well beyond 45 [age 70] and was able to be around for the births of all her grandchildren. “Of the many things I love about the chiropractic philosophy of care, the emphasis of evolutionary biology and anthropology factors, and innate and universal intelligence fascinate me,” said Dr. Murphy. “And beyond mechanical integrity, we also take other factors into account that UWS specifically believes in and teaches; What about one’s diet? What about exercise? Does someone have good sleep hygiene and what about certain supplements? Are there chemicals in their environment or pollution that are compromising their health? We see miracles happen in our office every week, and a lot of it can be contributed to our integrative approach.”

He believes that he has not even begun to peak. “Every year we get better, smarter and more intuitive,” said Dr. Murphy. “The excitement about being a chiropractor is realizing you can never actually figure ‘it’ out. There’s always more to learn and I truly love learning as much as I can. I don’t foresee retirement in my plans at all. The winner is not the first person to retire, it’s the last, and I want to be that person.” “Dr. Dan Murphy has been a leader in chiropractic practice and clinical education for more than four decades,” said UWS President and CEO Dr. Joseph Brimhall. “He stays abreast of the rapidly-evolving developments in the sciences of chiropractic and nutrition, and teaches how to apply these advancements to help patients achieve their optimal potential.”

During his time at UWS, Dr. Murphy credits Dr. Terry Yochum, Dr. Appa Anderson, Dr. Richard Stonebrink his mentors, UWS professors Dr. Richard Dr. Murphy will be honored at the UWS Open Stonebrink, Dr. Appa Anderson, and Dr. House Reception on Saturday, April 23, 2022 on the UWS campus in Terry Yochum, and for empowering him to keep getting better every year Portland, Oregon. and to be a ferocious learner. UWS Scholarships Help Students Succeed SAEED HABIB Doctor of Chiropractic Student My career goals are to institute holistic and somatic healing for refugees and migrants that have faced political and systemic oppression. The consequences of war leave many with unresolved psychosocial traumas that interrupt their quality of life. I wish to fill in the gap of political trauma in the chiropractic profession by offering whole-person care through a social-justice centered approach of healing. I am currently in Quarter 2 out of 12 Quarters in my degree. It seems like a long time until completion, but these weeks have been flying by already. As a family that has had to restart from nothing multiple times, it has been a battle to ground our feet in new soils and establish security within a new place that we are to call home. Consequently, this has taught us resilience--helping shape our adversity and allowing us to utilize opportunities that can heal our community. Being awarded this scholarship is not only a humbling honor, but it is also a milestone that has motivated me to keep my efforts going toward a direction that can one day better the lives of refugees, migrants, and people of color.

Doctor of Chiropractic Student With my degree I want to be able to build my own clinic for my hometown community (Beacon Hill, Seattle, WA) and provide a unique and affordable sports medicine and chiropractic care that is found

to be scarce in my community. The program is 12 quarters long and I just started in my program. I am in Q1 with the “hopefully” last class starting online only. I am currently taking this quarter from home in Seattle, but plan on moving down to Oregon in March after this quarter. This scholarship means a lot in the ways that it helped financially and

it allowed me to express the passion I have when it comes to diversity in health care. Financially it helped reduce limitations, which allows me to focus on what I want to do that I believe would best excel my learning here at UWS. The Diversity in Health Care Scholarship allowed me to self-explore more deeply to what the big picture is for me in this career. I am grateful that I was able to share my vision and in return was shown support by the university in helping me create it.

CHP Group Contributes $50,000 for Diversity and Inclusion initiatives in 2021 and 2022

Student Commons Enhancement Project - $106,000 Gift from Standard Process

Scholarships

Immediately adjacent to the Standard Process Student Commons is a beautiful outdoor terrace. However, Oregon weather limits its use. Now, thanks to a major contribution from our business partner and long-time UWS supporter, we are enhancing this terrace to provide an all-season gathering space for the campus community!

The university was able to create three one-time scholarship opportunities for incoming DC students of color. Two awardees were selected in fall 2021 and one winner was selected for winter term 2022 thanks to this contribution. Each DC student recipient will receive $10,000.

Diversity and Inclusion Fund The remaining funds were put into the university’s Diversity and Inclusion fund. The enhanced funding from CHP’s gift ensures that all members of the Student American Black Chiropractic Association (SABCA) can attend the annual American Black Chiropractic Association convention in 2021 and 2022. The fund will also help facilitate learning opportunities for students and employees. In collaboration with student members of SABCA, the students and the university are exploring a series of talks on DEI in health care to engage the collective university community in learning more about culturally competent and culturally relevant care.

This gift allows for year-round access to the terrace area that will feature outdoor seating and tables, integrated heating units, extended lighting, and ceiling-mounted fans to circulate fresh air. This charming gathering space provides a peaceful and relaxing area for students, patients, visitors, alumni, and the entire campus community to meet and mingle, enjoy refreshments from the adjacent campus store, and enjoy the serenity of the Northwest outdoors. Mindful of the health and social benefits of outdoor gatherings for community members, this timely gift allows the university to fully develop a safe and accessible space that will enrich the campus experience.


2021 FINANCIAL REFLECTION From Glenn Ford, Senior Vice President of Finance and Administration/CFO It was a tremendous honor to work with many dedicated UWS colleagues during Fiscal Year 2020-2021. Members of the UWS community have a laser focus on the success and wellbeing of our students and patients. In addition, stewardship and sustainability is fundamentally important to our devoted faculty, staff and administrators who implement and support the mission of University of Western States. This is evidenced by the fulfillment of UWS’ three mission goals: • Student Success • Stewardship and Sustainability • Academic Excellence and Integrated Health As a result of many strategic factors, including positive enrollment growth, robust investment returns, controlled expenses, and a focus on stewardship and sustainability, the university yielded strong financial results that meaningfully enhanced the financial foundation of UWS in the short-term and long-term. The net financial results incorporated both on-going and one-time revenue. Revenue generated from net tuition and fees, contributions from our dedicated alumni and friends, clinical services, auxiliary services, investment returns, and other sources allowed the university to provide excellent instruction and support services to our students along with opportunities to develop their clinical competencies. UWS takes immense pride in hiring and retaining faculty and staff who are passionate about serving our students and patients and furthering the institution’s mission; high quality, dedicated university employees continue to be the institution’s most valuable resource as we support our students and patients and advance the science and art of integrated health care through excellence in education and patient care. Special thanks to students, faculty and staff for their hard work and efforts to ensure a robust learning and healing environment for our students and patients. Fiscal year 2020-2021 was an extraordinary year for University of Western States. A focus on our students, patients, stewardship and sustainability allowed UWS to advance its mission, mission goals and strategic priorities.
