INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing It’s an exciting time to be in the innovative and enterprising areas of Education, Health and Wellbeing. The Faculty supports over 450 research-engaged academic staff, as well as over 30 dedicated research staff, including Professors, Readers and Research Fellows. Our teams are at the forefront of research and practice in their subjects and make a direct impact in many ways. We have over 240 doctoral students, many of whom are studying for a Professional Doctorate and making a direct impact in their workplaces. Postgraduate taught qualifications include MRes Sport and Exercise, MA Education, PGCEs for Primary Teaching, Secondary Teaching, Post-compulsory Teaching,

The team has experience of full-time and part-time learners, mature professionals and overseas students.
OUR RESEARCH EXPERTISE The Institute has long-established relationships with national and international partners and also hosts a number of research projects funded by agencies such as the Department for Education, Leadership Foundation for Higher Education, UK Research Councils, the British Council and many more. There are regular lectures from staff about these projects and partnerships and other research interests too.
CURRENT PHDS Projects currently being undertaken by our PhD students include: • digital ethnography and student filmmaking • pedagogic mediation and listening in the early years • children’s rights in early childhood • infant massage and family relationships. 6 INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION
STUDENT SUPPORT In addition to the expertise and support within the Institute, the University’s Doctoral College coordinates training programmes open to all PhD students and uses the Vitae framework to support research skills development and employability.
SUPERVISION One of our strengths is the level of individual support you will receive from experts in education and learning. The Faculty assigns all doctoral students a Director of Studies (DoS) and a Supervisor to guide you through your research. Together, they will meet with you regularly to discuss progress and help keep you on target, offering advice and feedback on written work at appropriate times. They will report on your progress and will help to clarify your ideas and to understand and meet the standard of work required. GRADUATE EMPLOYMENTBASED ROUTE TO EARLY YEARS TEACHER STATUS WITH BEST PRACTICE NETWORK Postgraduate Credit This is a part-time course for practitioners who are graduates in early years settings; this course will train you to teach children aged 0 to 5 years old. Research has shown that the quality of provision is higher in early years settings that employ more staff trained to graduate level.

This course is delivered by very experienced and well-qualified staff who are affiliated to the HEA, and is taught in groups of HE practitioners from across the university spectrum; providing a unique opportunity to learn from and with each other.
This course is intended to support the practical working needs of staff within an inclusive student-focused learning and teaching environment. This course will enable you to develop your classroom practice, including e-learning, within a framework of current andragogical theory. It will also provide an opportunity for you to develop skills in curriculum design and student support.
HOW WILL THIS COURSE IMPROVE MY EMPLOYABILITY? On successful completion of the programme, participants are awarded Fellow status of the Higher Education Authority (FHEA) as well as a PG Cert in Higher Education and Professional Practice.

During the course, aside from the academic work, I was also able to make new friends and we still now share teaching ideas and support each other. I have now been a teacher for nearly two years. This is a one-year course for pre-service teachers wishing to enter the profession. There is a generic route designed for a wide range of post-compulsory subjects, or an integrated route, which offers qualification for aspiring teachers of English (literacy).

These modules will also encourage you to evaluate your practice to improve your English/literacy teaching.
Our investment includes our state-of-theart Education and Teaching Building with teaching rooms fitted with interactive whiteboards, three lecture theatres, science classrooms, as well as social learning areas and a coffee shop.
