Welcome to the WLV Alumni Association Becoming a graduate of the University of Wolverhampton doesn’t mean losing contact with your friends or the University; it’s the beginning of a relationship that lasts a lifetime.

As a graduate, you automatically become a member of the WLV Alumni Association – a global network of over 100,000 alumni in more than 130 countries around the world. During your time with us, you will have gained valuable knowledge and shared many unforgettable experiences and it is these that form the basis of the relationship between the University and our alumni community.

Our graduates play an essential role in the continued success of the University and a source of encouragement for students, both now and in the future. It’s been all about graduation here at the WLV Alumni Association – as we celebrated graduation ceremonies around the world, welcoming our newest graduates and honouring inspiring individuals.

3,000 students, 17 ceremonies, 1 inspirational week Our most recent batch of new graduates and their families celebrated their academic achievements at graduation between 15 and 22 September 2017. A total of 17 ceremonies took place at Wolverhampton’s Grand Theatre, and both campus and the city were buzzing as dignitaries, academics,

WLV Alumni Association: one BIG family It’s been our best-ever year for reaching our newest alumni to welcome them to the Alumni Association family. We’ve now got over 100,000 members worldwide from over 130

countries. What’s more, this September over two-thirds of new graduates registered with us, taking away their free welcome gifts. If you still haven’t updated your details with us, do it now!

Graduation for students in India The University has had a successful partnership with Podar International College in India since 2013 – offering students

the opportunity to receive a BA (Hons) Business Management. With their graduation on 6 September 2017, the new graduates joined the University of Wolverhampton’s Class of 2017’s celebrations worldwide!

Inspirational figures honoured During this year’s graduation ceremonies, honorary degrees were given to 11 inspirational figures that have made a significant contribution to their field. They included successful comedian Al Murray; Paralympic gold medallist, Lord Holmes of Richmond; Chief Fire Officer of Staffordshire Fire and Rescue, Rebecca Bryant; and prominent local businessman Henry Carver.

This year’s Alumni Graduation Party out-sold all previous years, with graduates keen to celebrate their achievements in style. The Class of 2017 got dressed up to the max on Saturday 23 September at WV1 Terrace at the Molineux Stadium, enjoying the magic act, DJ and incredible live music from the Miss Fortunes. Did you read about alumna Emma Rodgers in the latest edition of Life magazine? If not, catch it online now! The talented artist has been gaining great recognition for her work – notably her Cilla statue in Liverpool, and most recently winning the David M Robinson Jewellery, Arts & Culture Award at

the Merseyside Women of the Year Awards 2017. Congratulations Emma! You can also read director Andrew Rutter’s searingly honest interview about working in the film business. The University of Wolverhampton graduate recently won Leicester’s 2017 The Short Cinema Best in Festival for his film, KonTiki for the band Ultrasound. He also directed a short film about another WLV alumnus, artist Dean Melbourne, which you can watch on vimeo.

Faculty of Arts: News MA Degree Show This year’s event at Wolverhampton Art Gallery from 14-22 October showcased the work of over 45 graduating Master’s students in disciplines ranging from ceramics and glass to photography and sculpture. Take a peek at their work online.

100 Masters – Only one Dean Melbourne!

Toni Louise celebrates success New BA (Hons) Fashion and Textile graduate, Toni Louise Magee has been celebrating her recent graduation, as well as business success. Already designing and making purses and clutch-bags which she sells worldwide on Etsy, she’s planning on expanding her business with support from the University’s SPEED programme.

Creative Black Country’s new campaign, 100 Masters, identifies and celebrates contemporary skilled people from the region. Among those to make the list is WLV alumnus, artist Dean Melbourne. You can now watch a short film about Dean made by another successful graduate and director, Andrew Rutter.

Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing: News 100 Masters – Only one Moses Murandu!

Nursing Times Award shortlist

Creative Black Country’s new campaign, 100 Masters, identifies and celebrates contemporary skilled peopl e from the region. The list includes authors, engineers, athletes, entrepreneurs, artists, brewers and poets – and among those chosen is the University’s Dr Moses Murandu, senior lecturer in Adult Nursing – who is recognised for his pioneering medical work into the healing powers of sugar.

Pioneering staff member, Clare Dickens, Mental Health and Wellbeing Co-ordinator, is in the running to be named Nurse of the Year at the prestigious Nursing Times Awards 2017 after introducing a unique programme to help students deal with suicide and selfharm. ‘Three Minutes to Save a Life’ trains staff members to recognise early warning signs in at-risk students and explains how they can escalate concerns proportionately and compassionately. The award winners will be announced in November.

Judo gold for podiumtopping student

Kristian Thomas – going from strength to strength

University student, Acelya Toprak, secured gold at the 2017 Belgrade European Open judo competition in Serbia in September. What’s more, she had scooped a silver medal at the 2017 Junior European Championships in Maribor, Slovenia just a week earlier. Sports scholar and judoka Acelya, was named Sportswoman of the Year at the University’s Sports Awards and trains at the British Judo Centre of Excellence at the Walsall Campus.

Olympic medal-winning gymnast Kristian Thomas has celebrated a successful first year as a BSc (Hons) Strength and Conditioning student at the University. The 28-year-old has had a busy year – adjusting to life as a new student, and a newly married man. Hear more about Kristian’s first year.

Faculty of Science and Engineering: News Plastic fantastic Dr Iza Radecka and Marek Kowalczuk from the University are exploring innovative ways to turn plastic waste into material that can be used in agriculture, medicine and general household items. They are looking at possible uses, including an environmentally-friendly form of mulch for farming, as ‘scaffolding’ on which to grow human cells and for items such as pens or bags. Rachel Toor: apprentice, student, graduate, manager!

Run for the Hills! With Morgan

Graduating this September in Construction Management, Rachel Toor has been celebrating gaining her first class honours degree, as well as a position as trainee site manager for Shaylor Group. What’s more, she received two prizes at graduation: The Wates Living Prize and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Certificate of Excellence for BSc (Hons) Construction Management. The University sponsored the Morgan Motor Company’s big showground event at the Three Counties Showground in Malvern over the August Bank Holiday weekend. University of Wolverhampton Racing Team (UWR) showed off its Formula Renault racing car as well as the University liveried Morgan Plus 4 Babydoll and Morgan ARV6 cars – both of which are competing in the AR Morgan Challenge Series.

Graduate appointed as Chief Magistrate University of Wolverhampton Law School alumnus, Tanweer Ikram, has been appointed by the Queen as Deputy Senior District Judge (Chief Magistrate). As Chief Magistrate, Tanweer will have leadership responsibility for the 300 judges across England and Wales. Read more about Tanweer’s journey.
