University picks up industry accolade

Welcome to the latest edition of Knowledge News. During the summer, the University of Wolverhampton celebrated an important milestone. On 17 June 2013, Wolverhampton held the title of ‘University’ for 21 years. We were proud to mark this anniversary and our 180 year heritage rooted in the development of the city and region. I hope many of you were able to join us for some of the commemorative events held throughout the year, especially those aimed at business.

The University of Wolverhampton celebrated winning the Knowledge Exchange/Transfer Initiative of the Year category at the Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards 2013 for its role in the Wolverhampton Business Solutions Centre.

The Wolverhampton Business Solutions Centre is a collaboration between the University of Wolverhampton, the Black Country Chamber of Commerce and Wolverhampton City Council. By sharing contacts and using a single customer relations management system, the centre, based at the University of Wolverhampton Science Park, has opened up partners to a much wider business community, linking academics and research to local small business organisations, supporting commercial needs, boosting skills and increasing market opportunities. The judges said the Centre “demonstrated a highly collaborative approach among several institutions and agencies for the clear benefit of companies and economic development”.

The University has continued to consolidate its work with a variety of sectors across the region in order to influence regional regeneration and competitiveness. Our latest initiative addresses the urgent need to improve skills, competitiveness and profitability within the manufacturing industry. The BEng (Hons) Manufacturing Engineering is a twoyear degree programme designed to fast-track employee training. After just one year of operation, the Knowledge Exchange and Enterprise Network (KEEN), has benefitted over 50 regional businesses. We are delighted with the number of productive partnerships formed between the business and academic communities and look forward to supporting further business growth and graduate opportunity through the scheme. Our business focus has also attracted national attention. The University won the Knowledge Exchange/Transfer Initiative of the Year category at the Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards for its role in the Wolverhampton Business Solutions Centre. I am delighted that the impact our knowledge transfer activities make to business competitiveness, productivity and graduate employability has been recognised. In addition, we were presented with the Athena Swan Bronze Award for our promotion of the role of women in science, engineering and technology. I hope that you are enjoying our Wolverhampton Business Champions Innovation Series and will continue to benefit from these fascinating insights into product and process innovation, pioneered by local organisations. The University collaborated with a number of high-profile partners including UTC Aerospace Systems, Caparo Tube Components, TRW Automotive, Moog Aircraft Group and Caterpillar UK in the development of the course.
