University taster workshops 2013/14 Law, languages, social sciences and film studies
The University of Wolverhampton is hosting a range of subject-specific workshops and taster sessions designed for primary and secondary school pupils, and college students. Each session is run by University lecturers and specialist staff to provide pupils with a realistic experience of University life and teaching. Some events are designed for students who are researching possible careers and making decisions about subject choices and courses. Each school/college can book up to ten places per event and these can be reserved by completing the booking form at the end of this brochure. Each event costs £6 per pupil for years 3 – 11. Pupils attending who are in Year 12 are invited free of charge.

Law Bullying and the law The aim of the day is to look at bullying within the context of the law and, to a lesser extent, consider how we can deal with it. The first part of the session will involve a short ice breaker in groups looking at how the law impacts on all our lives. Groups will prepare a mind map and present this to the rest of the group in turn. Your students will work in small groups to put together their ideas on the subject: what is bullying? This will be followed by an interactive presentation from the group to encourage students to recognise that acts of bullying, for example taking another child’s sweets or racially abusing them would, if committed by adults, result in legal sanctions. Cyber bullying will also be covered. The aim is to raise awareness amongst students that cyber bullying is not a minor act and needs to be reported and dealt with. In addition, a bullying-related court session will give students an opportunity to develop oral skills, team work and negotiation skills when they act out a scenario in a mock court setting. The second half of the session will be dedicated to students producing an antibullying poster (in small groups) and presenting it to the wider group and explaining the focus of their poster. Prizes will be awarded for the most creative. Length: 2.5 hours Audience: Years 10 and 11 Places: 25 Dates: Thursday 10 October 2013, 1.00pm-4.00pm Wednesday 23 October 2013, 9.30am-12.30pm Thursday 20 February 2014, 1.00pm-4.00pm Wednesday 5 March 2014, 9.30am-12.30pm

Your students will learn about the emphasis employers now place on applicants achieving vocationally-focused degrees and practical experience of working within the uniformed services prior to employment. Academic staff will be joined by University of Wolverhampton students who are serving Special Constables, Community Volunteers with West Midlands Fire Service, and members of the Royal Naval and Army Reserve. Your students will have the opportunity to ask questions and take part in a short quiz about the uniformed services, with a prize being awarded to the winning team. Social sciences, social policy and criminology What a riot! For many people, the summer of 2011 will be remembered as a time of riots in many areas of the country, with news coverage of London, Birmingham and Manchester being prominent. News of the riots spread quickly through social media which allowed the rioters to remain one step ahead of the police. For many days, there were images of burning buildings, shops being looted and stories of people acquiring new trainers and electrical goods. Media responses resorted to characterising young people as being out of control, ‘feral’, and poorly parented. Once the riots had come to an end, there were two responses; initially, questions were asked of how those arrested should be punished through the courts and with benefit penalties, and subsequently, questions of why these riots happened in the first place. This session will look back at the riots and their aftermath by attempting to understand some of those responses and consider what would be the best way forward. By looking at evidence from official reports and other sources of data, your students will have an opportunity to discuss why the riots happened, future approaches for responding to riot situations, and most importantly, whether they will happen again. Discussions will be led by sociology, social policy and criminology lecturers at the University of Wolverhampton and will provide an opportunity to see how the social sciences engage with real world events. Importantly, this is a session which encourages students to have their say and tell us about their own experiences and ideas.
