Outline Dance can be studied either on its own as a specialist degree, or in combination with Drama, UCAS code: WW54. BA (Hons) Dance produces graduates who are confident in their ability to work in a globally changing world and who are prepared to make a significant contribution to local and wider dance communities. Through your studies on this course, you will become versatile and critically reflective in thinking and practice whilst becoming skilled in the use of current and new technologies relating to dance. Black Box Theatre
You will study choreography and performance supported by work in dance technique (ballet, contemporary and jazz) and through learning dance repertoire. You will experience ways of looking at and writing about dance, be made aware of the latest digital technologies which relate to dance and have the opportunity for work-based-learning. There will be opportunities for work-based-learning in self-negotiated work environments ranging from teaching in schools or colleges, to working as a dance performer or administrating in arts industry.
Facilities Our purpose-built performing arts and learning centre; The Performance Hub is the home for all of our performance courses. The-state-of-the-art facilities in the hub will give you experience of excellent dance studios and theatre/performance/rehearsal spaces, Mac computer suites, professional level recording studios and lighting equipment. It boasts two bespoke dance studios, with fully sprung Harlequin dance floors, mirrored wall and equipment for sound and lighting requirements.
Careers Graduates will be able to gain employment in a variety of organisations and sectors such as with dance companies, in education (primary, secondary and further education), and in arts administration. They will be able to work as freelance dance artists or in other self-employed roles. They may be able to proceed to further study such as PGCE, MA Dance, MSc Dance Science or MPhil/PhD.

The BA (Hons) Drama course aims to produce enterprising students who are capable of independent thought, of using their initiative, and of creative and critical engagement within the disciplines of drama, theatre and performance in regional, national and international contexts. With a strong vocational focus, this course will help you develop skills to use new technologies and enhance your future employability. You will have the opportunity to acquire relevant vocational skills as part of your studies by creating drama, performance and theatre projects in workplace contexts. We specialise in three main strands of work – physical theatre, popular performance, and applied drama. You will acquire a portfolio of key skills and develop an understanding of why and how drama, theatre and performance practices work in different contexts. You will apply yourself to real-world settings and will engage in a substantial yearlong project that will enhance your employability and deepen your knowledge, understanding and skills in relation to drama, theatre and performance. The course has strong links with many professional arts organisations including the Geese Theatre Company, Gazebo TIE Company, Black Country Touring, The Grand Theatre and The Arena Theatre.
Facilities Our purpose-built performing arts and learning centre; The Performance Hub is the home for all of our performance courses. This landmark building features two bespoke drama studios that are ideal for rehearsals and small performances. The studios feature audio/visual equipment and facilities for hanging lighting for performances.
Careers A wide range of career opportunities are open to graduates including: teacher, performer, director, writer, stage technician or stage designer. Previous graduates have gone on to careers as stage technicians, playwrights and casting directors, while others have gone on to work in the media, marketing and management, and in schools and colleges.

Outline BA (Hons) Creative Theatre Technologies produces enterprising students who are capable of independent thought, of working between and across art disciplines, and of creative and critical engagement in the production, design and management process for performance. You will develop the skills to use new technologies in a range of subject-specific applications. Outline Music Technology can be studied either on its own as a specialist degree, or in combination with Popular Music, UCAS code: W391. The BA (Hons) Music Technology course offers a unique blend of creative practice with the technical perspective which is critical for success within the rapidly developing areas of music and audio technologies. This course stimulates your innate love of music, music production and music technology. And provides a structured approach to your career progression as technologist, producer, performer, composer, teacher or academic. In the first year you will be given an introduction to theory and practice, learning basic acoustics, studio concepts, and musical programming. You will also begin learning live sound engineering skills enabling you to work in a live environment. In your second year you will continue your studies in recording and production and learn new techniques in synthesis, DSP and video game sound. You will engage with the academic debate surrounding the development of technology and have the opportunity to start developing yourself as a practitioner. In your final year you will develop your professional practice, expand your skills and knowledge in the music industry, and explore musical interface design and music for image. You will work towards your final project as well as giving support to gigs and musical events for the University’s performers.

Our two recording studios offer the perfect blend of digital and analogue technologies giving students the opportunity to combine classic analogue recording technique with the flexibility and reliability digital technology provides. As well as a dedicated live room each for recording, for increased flexibility and choice of room acoustic, any of the music rehearsal rooms surrounding each studio can also be patched into the studio’s control room.

You will have practical modules in musical theatre at all levels of the course to enable you to develop your performance skills in dance, drama and music. The BA (Hons) Musical Theatre course explores the inter-relationships between knowledge, understanding and practical application of the subject. You will explore the inter-relationships between forms, practices, traditions, texts, theories and histories of musical theatre in their cultural, historical and contemporary contexts. The course is driven by contemporary developments in the industry and you will be provided with numerous opportunities to participate in the creation, development and production of new Musical Theatre. Careers This course will enhance graduates’ opportunities across a range of employment in the arts and related fields, rather than a specific career path, since dance is applicable in a wide variety of contexts in the arts at all levels of society. For example, school teachers will be qualified for posts in further and higher education, in addition to gaining a qualification to enhance their prospects in their current institutional base; freelance artists will have additional skills and techniques to offer in the arena of arts projects in schools, theatre educational outreach work and community arts; practitioners will have a deeper understanding of their craft and a qualification recognised by further and higher education establishments.

Outline MA Drama equips you with a systematic understanding and critical and creative awareness of practice and theory at the forefront of the discipline. You will develop an increasing degree of specialisation as you apply what you study to your own area of drama or performance practice. During the course, you will critically evaluate current practice and theories and through creative experiments explore the interplay between them. You will: • apply a comprehensive range of techniques to develop your own work, • develop an understanding of histories and philosophies of performance and consider the ethical implications of performance practice, • investigate a line of performance practices that inform and define the discipline, • be given opportunities to apply knowledge in original ways, for instance through a significant individual research project which can include a practical component. The course embraces a range of performance practices, directing and dramaturgy, playwriting, design and technical work, and arts administration. We continue to develop advanced facilities which will greatly enhance your learning experience. Outline The MMus Music degree is aimed at successful graduates from Music or Popular Music courses who possess particular interests and strengths in the following areas: • Music Performance • Musical Directing and Conducting • Songwriting / Composing Study at Master’s level in Music will offer you an emphasis on music writing, performance and promotion, aiming to develop your knowledge and critical awareness of current trends and opportunities in the professional practice of music. The MMus in Music has a strong focus on practical performance-based work as well as equipping you with relevant writing and promotional skills. You will be encouraged to focus on issues of technique in the performance and interpretation of music from both practical and theoretical perspectives, enabling you to analyse and reflect on your preferred approach and cultural ‘take’.

Outline Music technology is a rapidly evolving field of study with a diverse and expanding range of possibilities. The course is designed to go beyond the simple provision of training, and to instead enable you to engage with current debates and actively participate in some of the most vibrant areas of contemporary research. Throughout the course you will be encouraged to demonstrate self-direction and autonomy as you critically explore and define your position within the wider field. One overarching aim is that you should leave the course as not only an adept user of various hardware and software technologies, but as someone able to actively shape and develop their own, responding as necessary to future developments.
Careers The course will actively equip both graduates and those already in industry with a diverse range of skills to enhance their career prospects. It will also develop a range of opportunities for experience and employment in areas such as studio recording, media production and content creation, video game and software development, education (further or higher education), research assistantships/ studentships, and employment in higher education institutions. In addition to subject-specific practical skills, you will also acquire a range of transferable skills relevant for pursuing a research degree. These include critical, analytical, project management and research skills from the study of a broad spectrum of literature, research, and external projects.
In addition to developing your theoretical and methodological understanding, the MSc Audio Technology features a strong emphasis on practical work in a number of different (but related) areas. For example, you will study modules in Advanced Studio Practice, Sound on Screen, Music Computing and Musical Human-Computer Interaction. These are supported by a technology-orientated Research and Development module that provides robust foundation for the final Audio Technology Project.
Facilities The course is hosted within our purpose-built performing arts building, The Performance Hub, which integrates music, dance and drama teaching and learning provision into one building and boasts exceptional facilities to support student learning at the highest level. For example, there are two recording studios with analogue and digital recording/mixing/mastering facilities and Pro Tools HD technology, plus two large computer suites equipped with 60 iMacs running Protools, Logic and Final Cut Pro, plus a variety of specialist Open Source software.

Outline Leading the way with a revolutionary look at how bodies and minds affect dance, the MSc Dance Science provides a unique insight into the physical and psychological stresses to which a dancer is exposed. The course is designed for graduates or those with recent relevant professional experience to extend their understanding and use of dance science within a range of challenging and exciting professional and academic settings. You will undertake a range of taught modules and independent study which will focus on you developing an in-depth understanding of the symbiotic relationship between science and art within dance. Entry requirements You will need a good honours degree (2:2 or above) in a dance related subject or relevant subject area and/or 5 years professional experience.
Careers Graduates from this course will have enhanced employability and promotion prospects within their chosen profession. This course will allow you to prepare more effectively as a performer, and gives you the knowledge to provide relevant up-to-date information to dancers within your role as an educator, choreographer, teacher or artistic director. There is also the opportunity for existing practitioners to significantly improve their Continuing Professional Development portfolio. The course provides the perfect platform for dance science research, and opportunities for further study at doctoral level.
