Theory meets practice We can help you to build upon your previous studies and experience to enhance your understanding, knowledge and skills for your area of current or future work. Courses are normally offered part-time over a two-year period, and provide opportunities for both personal and professional development. Improving people’s lives is at the heart of the courses we offer, and the School constantly strives to identify service improvements through collaboration with health and social care providers. We support the continuing education of health and social care practitioners through a portfolio of contemporary courses, which reflect latest practices.
Continuing education is an essential requirement for all professionals working in health and social care. It is important for health service employers to ensure that their workforce is up-to-date with national and regional policies that influence local service provision. At the same time, you will be keen to develop personal skills and interests to enhance your employability and advance your career opportunities. The Department of Health (2009) identified the following essential aspects of continuing education as: •
maintaining competent professional practice
•
supporting quality services and protecting the public

Research and Enterprise Research and development are viewed as an integral part of the School of Health and Wellbeing’s activities, underpinning learning and teaching within subject areas and ensuring that there is a rigorous evidence-base for effective healthcare practice.
Our research opportunities: Professional Doctorate in Health and Wellbeing This is an exciting inter-professional course, designed to develop competent researchers through a programme of training in research methods leading to a research thesis. The curriculum supports both work-located and work-related learning. This innovative course is designed for experienced professional practitioners, rather than for academic student researchers. This PhD supports researchers in professional practice through work-based research that focuses on their professional needs and the needs of their organisations.

Within our School we publish an online journal, entitled the Journal of Health and Social Care Improvement, that contributes to the evidence base and critical reflection required to help drive changes and improvements in health and social care education, research and practice.
