Welcome to the School of Technology
On behalf of all my colleagues, I am delighted to welcome you to the School of Technology. The School is a lively and friendly place which prides itself on the quality of its academic staff and the support that it provides for students. The School offers professionally relevant degree courses designed through close links with computing, engineering and construction employers. We provide: • regular subject reviews, in conjunction with industry and professional institutions, to ensure that our syllabuses are current and at the forefront of technology

Cutting-edge facilities Our facilities are spread across two campuses in Wolverhampton and Telford. The Technology Centre on City Campus is a fully-equipped facility designed to enhance your learning experience and provide the best environment to support your studies and career aspirations. Our facilities and the support and insight of our academic and technical staff – experienced industry experts – ensure that you’re fully prepared for the challenge of your studies, and the industry you’ll enter upon graduation. Everything you need is at hand, with easy access to modern equipment, current research and specialised facilities for your subject area. • Over 400 high-spec PCs running specialist software. • Design Studio, Prototyping Laboratory and Virtual Reality Suite. • Construction and infrastructure laboratories equipped for geotechnics, hydraulics, structures, environmental science and thermodynamics. • Games, networking and gadget technology laboratories. Our internationally-recognised engineering department at Telford Campus boasts multi-million pounds’ worth of advanced engineering equipment. Its quality is recognised by industry. Aerospace and Formula One racing teams have sought our expert knowledge and commissioned projects to take advantage of the superior facilities, which encompass:

Work placements in industry We have extensive business links with companies in the engineering, IT and construction industries – and have placed hundreds of reliable and talented undergraduate students with companies over the last 20 years. Our excellent reputation provides us with a broad database of positions for our placement and graduate students. We have positions available locally and nationally in both large blue-chip companies and small and medium sized companies. Our established links with industry directly benefit you in our teaching, we often identify managers to give guest lectures about best practice, many of whom are previous graduates who are now seeking to recruit placement students into their organisation. We work closely with a wide range of companies, including: Capgemini, IBM, GE Aviation, Bullocks, Thomas Vale, Goodrich and Moog to name just a few. Companies often approach us for their graduate and undergraduate needs. We have a strong record in organising careers fairs, this gives companies and students alike the opportunity to network and for our students to discuss vacancies and career progression with managers.
In preparation for the workplace our placements team runs careers workshops: assisting you in writing your CV and offer practice interviews. All placements are vetted by our team, we attend visits to ensure that you and your employer are both happy and if there is a problem we are there to support you to resolve it.

Innovative learning and teaching At the University of Wolverhampton, we believe that in order for you to engage successfully with your academic and vocational studies you should undertake a variety of learning activities. So, although your studies will include attending lectures and seminars, a significant portion for some areas will also include on-site visits and field trips. The facilities used during teaching provide you with practical experience of industry required knowledge and expertise. You will take part in discussions with industry experts as well as fellow students, exploring your subject areas in depth, enabling you to place them in a wider global context. Due to our close links with regional and national companies, you may have the opportunity to attend guest lectures, and have projects and case studies provided in a real-life, industrial setting. There are also opportunities to study at partner institutions overseas, enabling you to enhance your studies in an international as well as domestic environment.

Research informed teaching 12
Research informed teaching Throughout the School, our lecturers are active researchers, and their experience directly influences what and how they teach. Their real-world, contemporary examples inform coursework and practical assignments, and illustrate teaching and practice. Current research had led to students working on projects including: specification and design of sensing systems for environmental management; context aware systems; and multiplayer games technology. We introduced our BSc (Hons) Computer Systems Engineering degree to satisfy the demand for this specialism. Despite the traditional name, we’ve ensured the degree is completely up-todate and informed by leading industrial and research practice. Much of the systems knowledge on which the course was based was established by our pervasive systems research work – designing miniaturised and robust distributed computer systems for sensing the environment and use in other scientific explorations. As we introduced the concept of these specialised ‘gadgets’ to our students we saw how this linked to their interest in computerbased gadgets of all kinds. Our students’ enthusiasm led us, with the participation of staff and students, to take a stand at the Gadget Show, where we demonstrated a range of staff and student projects. The response from attendees has been phenomenal, resulting – among other things – in new research partnerships.
Our Games Development degree is supported by our Institute of Gaming and Animation, which meets industry demands to deliver cutting-edge technology and design solutions underpinned with expert knowledge and internationally recognised research. This ensures that we have up-to-date industry knowledge and that we help pave the way for our graduates’ careers in this industry. Our research work continues to expand, with the award of €3.8m of European funding for a University-led project on sensing systems to ensure food traceability – Farm to Fork. This project employed a number of our students during their placement year, where they directly participated in the research activities.

Architecture and Design There is an ever increasing need for good designers to help shape the future of the buildings we live in and the products we use within them. All of our courses have been developed in close consultation with industry practitioners and accrediting bodies so that you have the up-to-date technical knowledge and design flair to work in today’s ever changing industry.
Our Architectural Design Technology and Interior Architecture and Property Development courses are accredited by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT). This ensures they have been assessed for content, structure and resources against standards set by CIAT and the Quality Assurance Agency, QAA. It also provides our graduates with a direct route to chartered status.

Our close links with Ajman University in the United Arab Emirates have resulted in students taking part in an exchange programme to broaden their knowledge of world architecture. BSc (Hons) Architectural Design Technology
BSc (Hons) Architecture*

By studying this course you will obtain an in-depth knowledge of how and when CAD can be implemented in the design and construction process and how this technology can support the construction industry. This highly practical course is at the leading edge of technology and meets growing industry demand for professionals with an in-depth knowledge of CAD and the design and construction process. You will be taught by experienced staff using the latest industry relevant software tools in our dedicated laboratories including the 3D visualisation laboratory.
By studying the BSc (Hons) Architectural Design Technology, you will obtain an internationally accredited and recognised qualification that will form the basis for excellent career prospects as an architectural technologist throughout the world. An accredited Honours degree is also an advantage when you progress your membership of CIAT, this will lead to receiving exemptions against your Professional and Occupational Performance (POP) record. This course brings together a range of skills and subjects including design, new technology, sustainability and construction methods that can lead you into a professional career working closely with architects and other building professionals in both the public and private sectors. The course is taught by staff with industry experience using a combination of methods that match professional practice including studio and drawing office sessions using the latest Computer Aided Design (CAD) to develop your design work, ensuring that it is up-to-date and meets the needs of the industry. The course is developed with input from industry professionals to ensure that it is up-to-date, using the relevant methods and meets the needs of the industry. ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN 16
BSc (Hons) Interior Architecture and Property Development Accredited by: Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT). This course will develop the practical skills needed to successfully apply interior architectural design principles for property development within the broader context of urban design. You will explore systems of regulation through which urban and rural developments operate, and marketing mechanisms from the viewpoint of investors, developers and ultimately the occupiers of buildings. Current design and development principles surrounding the change of use of a building and how this can directly and indirectly impact the surrounding urban area are key themes. Other topics include design feasibility, conservation, preservation, ‘Secure by Design’ and ‘Home Zones’ design and development principles as well as the construction technology and building regulations required for many types of buildings, interiors and urban developments.
HNC Architectural Studies The HNC Architectural Studies will provide you with the skills to work effectively work as a technician within the architectural design team, providing technical support to architects and architectural technologists. Theoretical and practical content bring together a range of skills and subjects including design, new technology, sustainability and construction methods. You will gain skills in the collation, organisation and investigation of technical information and its impact on the overall design process – enabling you to provide innovative solutions through the preparation of drawings and specifications. Successful completion of the course will allow you to progress onto a range of architectural design based degrees. The HNC also potentially provides the first stage towards attaining Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists professional membership as an Architectural Technician. Building Surveying is a varied profession operating in the public and private sectors covering both residential and commercial clients. This course is designed to provide you with a sound knowledge of building surveying, and the opportunity to acquire the necessary skills to become a chartered building surveyor. The course involves inspecting and surveying existing buildings, proposing and managing refurbishment projects, appraising buildings for new uses, and conserving and adapting listed buildings. There is also advice and guidance on building defects and failures, diagnosis of defects and specifications of remedial work. You will undertake field trips and practical case studies covering urban growth, architectural styles and converted and refurbished buildings. A key feature of our course is that it encompasses real-life, realtime projects that are accessible as part of the course delivery. This will mean that you will experience real projects first hand – not just in simulation. Key features of the delivery of the BSc (Hons) Building Surveying are site visits and ‘defect trails’ provided by lecturers and practitioners from within the discipline.
By studying the BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering you will obtain the ability to develop appropriate solutions to engineering challenges by using new or existing technologies, through innovation and creativity. Civil Engineers are responsible for the design, management and construction of major infrastructure projects such as dams, reservoirs, bridges, major buildings, water supply, harbours and sea defences. The equipment housed in the Built Environment laboratories, such as the multi-purpose flume, enables the implications of decisions with regard to infrastructure design in relation to water courses and flood potential to be practically assessed.

BUILT ENVIRONMENT 20
BSc (Hons) Civil and Environmental Engineering Accredited by: Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), Institution of Highways and Transportation (IHT), Institute of Highways Incorporated Engineers (IHE). Civil and Environmental Engineering is all about creating, improving and protecting the environment. As a Civil and Environmental Engineer you will contribute to the design and build of infrastructure that is sustainable and that provides the facilities for day-to-day life of individuals. You will carry out impact assessments and sustainability and feasibility studies to safeguard the sustainability of projects. There is a growing trend within the construction industry to employ graduates who possess both an understanding of the principles of civil engineering, as well as an appreciation of environmental challenges. As a graduate of this course, you will have the ability to manage a project taking sustainable development issues into consideration. The degree provides a sound basis from which to develop a career and progress to Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. Emphasis is placed on practical quantity surveying and commercial applications and as such, you will take part in hands-on exercises based on real-life projects. As well as moving into a career based in commercial management and quantity surveying, with opportunities to work for client organisations, contractors or professional practices, you will gain opportunities for employment in more specialist areas such as capital allowances, insurance assessment, consultancy, accountancy and law firms. BSc (Hons) Construction Management Accredited by: Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) This course will equip you with a detailed understanding of the key principles of construction management, such as co-ordination, monitoring and control of the variety of operations and processes in the construction industry. Your education will be underpinned with knowledge of construction technology, law, business and finance, enabling you to apply these areas to construction projects. Your studies will further be enhanced by our status as an Accredited Centre for the CIOB.
BSc (Hons) Commercial Management and Quantity Surveying
This specialist course has been designed as the route for your development as a professional Chartered Builder. The course will prepare you to take on a series of roles and responsibilities in contemporary construction teams such as project management, contracts management, estimating, site engineering, cost engineering and programme management. This course offers you not only comprehensive technical and academic study, but also a vocational approach to quantity surveying. The course aims to provide you with a broad education in construction technology, measurement, management, law and contract. HNC Building Studies This HNC is an ideal first step for those looking for a professional role in the construction industry. The HNC Building Studies is an industry recognised qualification in its own right but also prepares you for a career within the modern building team in roles such as a contracts manager, estimator, site engineer or quantity surveyor. Developed with input from industry professionals to ensure it meets the needs of industry, the course has both a theoretical and practical content that brings together a range of skills and subjects including design, new technology, sustainability and construction methods. You can progress from this course into the second year (full-time equivalent) of an associated BSc (Hons) degree. Note: The HNC Building Studies course is delivered only on a part-time basis. As such, you have the opportunity to attend this course through day release from your relevant daily employment.

COMPUTING AND COMPUTER SCIENCE 24
BSc (Hons) Computing This course will provide you with a strong grounding in the technological aspects of computing applications, and equip you with the knowledge and understanding in the field of databases, networks and programming. You will learn the fundamentals of programming, problem solving and web development. As you progress, the course addresses areas such as IT security and server management, and you will develop your understanding of the computer architecture and operating systems principles used in computing. You will learn how to design and build robust websites which conform to the relevant legislation. Positions obtained by our graduates have included programmer, network executive, database administrator, technician, applications developer and systems analyst. BSc (Hons) Computer Systems Engineering This technical degree focuses on hardware and software and how they interact. You will explore the pervasive elements of technology such as GPS, 3G and Wi-Fi and how they can be used to bring a multitude of different systems together. BSc (Hons) Computer Science (Games Development) Building on the core fundamentals of computer science, this course investigates technologies including hardware (consoles, input devices) and software games engines. It covers the mathematics and physics required to create believable agents, non-player characters (NPCs) and virtual worlds inside a computer game. Programming is an essential requirement for all computer scientists and games developers, and you will be developing your skills in this area throughout your course. In addition to your games development studies, you will also learn about advanced computer graphics and artificial intelligence. Graduates from this course can expect to enter a career in the games industry as a games programmer or developer, system developer or technician. Our IT Management Top-up course is aimed at the student with either a HND or Foundation Degree who is interested in the issues surrounding the planning, management and operation of secure information systems within an organisation. As information systems today are so widely used to support the business functions, you will be made aware of the importance of information and systems security. You will also learn about the management of projects and be able to take pursue an area of particular interest to you, such as business analysis and consultancy skills, IT innovations or systems acquisition and development. In a world where the opportunities to embrace technological change are ever present, the course prepares you towards a career which demands the ability to manage projects and an awareness of the ethical and professional responsibilities of a computer professional. Mathematics Mathematics is a discipline central to almost everything we do, from everyday finance to scientific development and discovery. It is also a rewarding subject to study for its own sake, and is constantly evolving. Our team includes a world-leading Professor in Cybermetrics – the study of web-based content for social science research using techniques that are not specific to one field of study. The Mathematics team are very supportive and the department is commended each year in the National Student Survey, consistently gaining high rates of satisfaction – 89% in 2012.

BSc (Hons) Mathematics Mathematics graduates are highly sought after – studying mathematics will teach you new techniques that can be applied to real life situations as well as challenges that you will meet in the workplace. Mathematicians are valued for their analytical skills and logical approach to unravelling complex issues. The course is a mixture of theory and application, enabling you to learn both the techniques of the subject and how they are relevant in the real world. The versatility of the subject means it can act as a gateway to a diverse range of careers in teaching, the world of business – specifically actuarial work, accountancy, finance and investment – and even specialist areas such as cryptography and its relation to internet security – now in high demand as business transactions are increasingly conducted online. The course has recently gained approval from the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, which means you’ll be accepted for associate membership upon graduation – the first step to becoming a Chartered Mathematician.
Within our team are a number of teachers who contribute to the teaching of A-level Further Mathematics at many local schools. Many of our graduates are now Mathematics teachers in the local area; this helps us to maintain close links with the education community and current activity within the subject at all levels. We pride ourselves on the academic support and guidance given by our friendly and approachable staff. Students have shown their appreciation for this by the consistently high ratings they have given us in the National Student Survey in recent years. The most recent government research assessment exercise (RAE) rated the mathematics lecturers’ Statistical Cybermetrics Research Group joint 1st in the country for the quality of its publications, the majority of these publications being described as “world leading”.

Campus life The City Campus is in the heart of Wolverhampton City Centre, located near the high street shops and entertainment areas. It is ideally accessible for the motorway network and Birmingham International airport. In all, there are over 1,600 rooms available in our Halls of Residence – many which are en-suite, with a number designed for people with disabilities. In the rooms, you’ll find all the furnishings and fittings you’d expect, including chair and desk, bed, washbasin, and wardrobe; and the shared kitchens are well-equipped with microwave, cooker, fridgefreezer and lockable cupboards for your food.

The Campus Learning Centre offers extended opening hours and stocks all the paper-based and electronic resources you’d expect to support your subject area. Telford Campus Halls of Residence share the attractive grounds of Priorslee Hall. There are almost 100 en-suite student rooms with wireless-Internet access, and the reassurance of CCTV and 24-hour security staff.
Wolverhampton has so much to offer, from the Grand Theatre to the 14-screen Cineworld complex showing the latest releases and Bollywood screenings. There is an Art Gallery and a host of bars, pubs and clubs offering everything from drinks promotions to the latest chart tunes. The city is a popular venue for both new and established artists.
Fusing the old with the new, the modern campus is set in the grounds of a Grade II listed, 18th Century mansion, Priorslee Hall. It’s close to the M54 motorway and just a 10 minute hop on the bus from Telford town centre, yet there’s plenty of thinking space to be had. Located in Shropshire; one of our greenest counties; you’re never very far from open fields and rural calm. The Campus is home to a large number of international students, so you’re likely to make friends with people from all around the world.
