Helen Schumacher AN ENGAGED LEGACY When sports editor Helen Schumacher (’71) penned some of her first “Give ‘em Helen” columns for the student paper at the brand new University of Wisconsin-Parkside, it could have signaled the beginning of a career in sports journalism. But that’s not how the story played out. Television, and Efrem Zimbalist Jr. in particular, proved more influential. In a Kenosha News interview some years ago, Schumacher admitted to having a crush on Zimbalist as the star of TV’s “The FBI.” One episode featured a crime lab, and Schumacher made the connection with the university’s science labs. She soon found herself in the Kenosha FBI office looking for work. Schumacher joined the FBI as a support employee. At that time, women were not considered for the position of special agent. During her 30-year career, Schumacher worked on numerous high-profile cases and was one of two agents who compiled evidence used to convict a former deputy secretary of defense of obstructing justice. She ultimately became chief of the Economic Crimes Unit. After her FBI days, Schumacher returned to Kenosha. Her reputation for organization and attention to detail led to work with the Office of Child and Youth Protection, established by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in response to issues of sexual abuse by priests. Those efforts contributed to various reports, including one from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. Schumacher credits her be-involved attitude with parents who were “very participatory.” Even back in the early days of UW-Parkside, she encouraged others as an excerpt from a “Give ‘em Helen” column attests: “… all students have a chance to become an important part of this university …. How: School spirit, team support, or just plain getting involved in any activity.” Today, Helen Schumacher serves as president of the Kenosha Police and Fire Commission and takes pride in her involvement. If you are in her company and the sound of a police or fire siren pierces the air, you will probably hear: “There go my people.” Annual Scholar and Donor Recognition - 5

Come About Mallory Olesen Willing, 2013 with special thanks to Professor Trenton Baylor
Frances Jaeschke In honor of Frances Jaeschke’s commitment to student success and decades of support to the mission of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, an original sculpture was dedicated to Frances and her late husband, Ralph. The sculpture was installed and dedicated during the UW System Board of Regents meeting hosted by UW-Parkside in October 2013. The sculpture entitled “Come About” was created by Mallory Olesen Willing, a UW-Parkside art student with an emphasis in sculpture. The inspiration for this piece came from the journey of the students she met here at the university. “As an artist I wanted this piece to have an inclusive and encouraging presence. Although abstract, I wanted to fill the figure with familiar shapes for the viewer, most having to do with the visual and performing arts. I combined these forms to create the implied body of a sailing ship, midtacking maneuver. “Nautically speaking, to ‘tack’ or to ‘come about’ is to turn the bow through the wind repeatedly (in a zigzag pattern) in order to gain speed. I found this to be a lovely parallel for the college experience. More ground must be covered and the task is more difficult, however the speed gained by this maneuver more than justifies the struggle.” Frances Jaeschke’s giant spirit has provided decades of support and undying devotion to UW-Parkside, our mission, and our students. The Jaeschkes established endowed scholarships in each of the university’s four colleges, created the Ralph Jaeschke Solutions for Economic Growth Center and most recently supported the Institute of Professional Educator Development. With each passing moment, Fran’s dedication to the university seems to grow even more intent on securing education for future generations.
