As dean of the College of Arts and Humanities it is my great pleasure to share with you our first @The Rita brochure — your comprehensive guide to more than 250 individual cultural events and performances occurring in the incredible new Rita Tallent Picken Regional Center for Arts and Humanities (fondly known as “The Rita”) in 2013-14. Please save this guide for future reference! We think you’ll be amazed when you take a look at the diverse array of arts, humanities, and cultural events being presented @The Rita in the coming year. At the heart of our mission is the desire to create and sustain vibrant and dynamic academic and cultural programs that promote educational achievement, artistic expression, community engagement, and economic vitality for the communities we serve. Art Galleries The Rita is home to three incredible, new art galleries, each featuring unique and distinctive exhibitions that showcase the artistic talents of nationally and regionally recognized fine artists as well as emerging new artists. The Fine Arts Gallery is our largest gallery, with nearly 4,000 square feet of exhibit space that showcases diverse works by professional artists throughout the nation. The Emile H. Mathis Gallery is home to exhibits that feature outstanding regional artists from southeastern Wisconsin. The UW-Parkside Foundation Gallery features the new and sometimes provocative work of emerging student and professional artists. UW-Parkside galleries are free and generally open to the public between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday during the regular school year. Galleries are also open 30 minutes prior to the beginning of performance events @The Rita.

Mathis Gallery UW-Parkside Archives presents photographs printed from antique glass plate negatives, featuring sailing and the lakeshore of the Kenosha, Racine, and surrounding areas under snow.
On the Surface of the Midwest: Recent Fieldwork by Terrence Campagna Sept. 4 – Oct. 17 | Fine Arts Gallery Michigan-based artist Terrence Campagna collects discarded paper, fast food containers, and plastic wrappers during his “field trips” — short walks or multi-day treks — across the landscape of the Midwest. Bringing his finds back to the studio, he pieces them together into beautifully patterned constructions.

Phil Schultz: One End of Forever Sept. 4 - Nov. 9 | UW-Parkside Foundation Gallery Living in poverty, Racine artist Phil Schultz often uses materials scavenged from recycling bins and trash cans. Over the past 30 years, Schultz has produced a vast body of work including bronze cast and welded steel sculptures, and expressive abstract paintings. Making a habit of writing every day, Schultz has authored nearly 30,000 sonnets also represented in the exhibition.

Art Galleries European and American Landscape Painting from the Jean F. Lanners Collection Oct. 14 – Dec. 14 | E. H. Mathis Gallery Ranging in styles from naturalist to abstract, these 19th and 20th century landscape paintings were gifted to the Luxembourg American Cultural Society in Belgium, Wisconsin by Jean F. Lanners and loaned to UW-Parkside galleries.
Outsider Art from Little City Foundation Nov. 4 – Dec. 14 | Fine Arts Gallery This show features paintings and drawings by artists with disabilities created through the Little City Foundation for the Arts. The exhibition includes the premier of “Share My Kingdom,” a documentary film about Harold Jeffries, Wayne Mazurek and Luke Tauber, three Little City Foundation artists.
Art Department Senior Exhibitions Nov. 21 – Dec. 14 | UW-Parkside Foundation Gallery Art Department graduating seniors exhibit their work.

Branding Creativity, an Exhibition by Plaid Tuba Jan. 15 – March 5 | Fine Arts Gallery This community-inclusive project, created by Wisconsin-based creative professionals, Plaid Tuba, demonstrates how creativity is a brand’s best asset. Partnering with local companies, this exhibition brings new artistic depth to various industries and illustrates how the creative professional is vital to every business.
Figure Studies Feb. 4 – March 23 | Foundation Gallery This exhibit highlights “Two Nudes with Oak Stool and Canvas”, a lithograph by noted realist artist Philip Pearlstein. In the UWParkside collection, our artists present their own figure studies. Images in the exhibition invite discussion of the cultural meaning of sexuality, censorship, violence and abstraction. Curated by Kenosha artist and business owner Chet Griffith.
Plein Air Painting at Parkside by the Racine Art Guild Feb. 4 – May 18 | E. H. Mathis Gallery In the rich tradition of outdoor painting, the Racine Art Guild members and friends of the guild will capture the diverse beauty, changing light and color of the campus and surrounding parklands in the medium of their choice. This show will be juried by Lisa Marie Barber, chair, associate professor of Art at UW-Parkside.
Contemporary Ceramics March 17 – July 18 | Fine Arts Gallery Enjoy contemporary ceramic artwork by members of the National Council of Education for the Ceramic Arts. The exhibition coincides with their Milwaukee Conference March 19-23.

Music UW-Parkside bands, orchestra, choirs, and many additional instrumental and vocal ensembles offer performances that appeal to a wide range of musical styles — from classical masterpieces to contemporary new works performed for the first time. Theatre UW-Parkside Theatre Arts is a vibrant, award-winning program. Receiving the 2009 Wisconsin Regents Award for Teaching Excellence, the program continues to accrue accolades and honors, season after season. Audiences and students benefit from a rich range of professionalquality performances from classical to contemporary comedies, musicals, and dramas in the newly expanded facilities including a state-of-the-art “black box” theatre. Ideally located between Milwaukee and Chicago, staff and students regularly connect with the hundreds of nearby professional theatres. Patriotic Performances A Salute to Our Veterans Nov. 10, 3 p.m. | Main Stage Theatre Sponsored by the UW-Parkside College of Arts & Humanities “A Salute to Our Veterans” is an inspirational performance featuring the incredible musical talents of the Navy Band Great Lakes, as well as the 484th Army Band, Milwaukee. This free performance features some of the U.S. military’s finest musicians playing a variety of beloved patriotic melodies and anthems and will include a moving multimedia salute and tribute to all veterans — as well as recognizing their families and the sacrifices they have made. We invite all veterans from the region to be our special guests at this memorable Veteran’s Day event honoring those who have served their country and helped to keep America the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Sounds of the Season Holiday Concert Dec. 14, 7 p.m. | Bedford Hall Sponsored by the UW-Parkside College of Arts & Humanities Back by popular demand, the Navy Band Great Lakes returns to UW-Parkside for a celebration of the sounds of the holiday season. This free concert will feature an array of classic holiday tunes and melodies in a variety of musical styles and features some of the finest musicians the U.S. Navy has to offer — as well as a special appearance by Santa Claus! Pallade Musica Nov. 15, 7 p.m. | Bedford Hall Generously sponsored by Dr. Donald A. Cress 2012 Grand Prize winner of the international Early Music America Baroque Performance Competition, Pallade Musica is a young and vibrant ensemble from Montréal, Canada, that performs 17th century Italian repertoire for violin, cello, theorbo, and harpsichord. Performing works by such great composers as Scarlatti and Castello, the quartet masterfully creates a diverse sound palette of various textures and colors in its acclaimed performances. This internationally acclaimed group is sponsored in part by collaboration with Milwaukee’s Early Music Now series.
Legends of Tin Pan Alley Featuring Lil’ Rev Jan. 12, 2 p.m. | Bedford Hall Come along on a fascinating journey back in time to the streets of New York City in the early 1900s where Tin Pan Alley was born. Lil’ Rev is an award-winning folk singer, storyteller, and comedian. Recently voted Wisconsin’s best folk singer, Lil’ Rev will perform classic tunes and tell the captivating stories of such American music legends as Irving Berlin, Al Jolson, Eddie Cantor, Sophie Tucker, and Fanny Brice with his “one man band” using guitar, mandolin, banjo, and harmonica. Audiences will sing-along, clap, laugh, and maybe even shed a tear or two during this musical travelogue that keeps you mesmerized from beginning to end.

Visiting Artist Series Whad’ya Know with Michael Feldman Feb. 1, 9 a.m. | Main Stage Theatre Fans of Michael Feldman’s hit public radio program “Whad’ya Know?” will not want to miss this rare opportunity to be a part of this live radio program that will be broadcast from UW-Parkside to over 260 stations internationally. This zany two-hour comedy show features Feldman along with the “Whad’Ya Know?” Trio, surprise guests and musical performers, and many regular (or irregular!) interactive audience “bits” including “All the News That Isn’t,” the “Whad’Ya Know?” quiz, “Town of the Week,” and “Thanks for the Memos.” Don’t miss this rare opportunity to be a part of this hilarious live broadcast @The Rita!

East of the River March 14, 7:30 p.m. | Bedford Hall Generously sponsored by Dr. Donald A. Cress New York City’s “East of the River” music ensemble was founded by internationally renowned recorder players Nina Stern and Daphna Mor. The project explores haunting and virtuosic melodies from the traditional repertoires of the Balkans, Armenia and the Middle East, as well as gems of the Medieval European classical repertory. The music is arranged and interpreted by musicians whose musical backgrounds include classical, jazz and world music. This internationally acclaimed group is sponsored in part by collaboration with Milwaukee’s Early Music Now series.
BrassWorks Quintet Feb. 15, 7:30 p.m. | Bedford Hall BrassWorks Quintet has been dazzling audiences since 1983, including a nationally broadcast concert on the WFMT Chicago network, and side-by-side performances with the Canadian Brass in Wisconsin tour performances. Led by UW-Parkside’s own Mark Eichner, BrassWorks concerts feature something for everyone — inspiring classical selections ranging from Bach to Bernstein, and toe-tapping selections from Tin Pan Alley, Broadway musicals, and jazz.
