Fall 2014
Message from the Library Director
About Us Since 1997, the Center for Community Partnerships at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside has provided extended learning opportunities to individuals and organizations in southeastern Wisconsin and beyond. Our mission is to educate and engage individuals and organizations by offering professional development, personal enrichment, and communitybased learning experiences through dynamic partnerships that address community priorities. The Center for Community Partnerships is sustained by program revenues and support from UW-Parkside, UW-Extension, grants, and local stakeholders. For more information, call 262-595-3340, visit us on the web www.uwp.edu/go/ccp, or visit us on campus in Tallent Hall.
Welcome to the Fall 2014 “Your U” catalog, where it is indeed all about you. This catalog details dozens of learning opportunities made available by the UW-Parkside Center for Community Partnerships, with the support of Parkside’s faculty and staff, and our community partners. Affordable continuing professional education courses, conferences, and noncredit certificate programs are described, with offerings ranging from the practical to the entertaining. The Parkside Library maintains a University Archives and Area Research Center. It is one of 13 research centers in Wisconsin that provides access to Wisconsin Historical Society holdings— our WHS records cover Kenosha and Racine counties. We have everything from citizenship records to local court records. From September 2-14, the Library will present the Wisconsin Historical Society’s “Risking Everything: A Freedom Summer Exhibit for Students.” This traveling display of photos and documents marks the 50th anniversary of Freedom Summer, a nonviolent movement to integrate voting in Mississippi in 1964. Teachers are encouraged to visit and bring their classes. Finally, we just learned that the UW-Parkside Library has been awarded a prestigious National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Big Read Grant! In late September and October, we will celebrate Ray Bradbury’s dystopian classic Fahrenheit 451 with special programming and dozens of community-wide events. Free copies of the book will be available at a dozen distribution points, and we will present a special Art in the Library exhibit, exploring themes of censorship and dystopia. Sam Weller, author of The Bradbury Chronicles and Bradbury’s official biographer, will be keynote speaker on September 24. We are working with many community partners on the Big Read, including our good friends at the Kenosha Public Library and Racine Public Library. At Parkside, we embrace all learning opportunities. It’s our business and our passion. We look forward to seeing you on campus and we encourage you to take advantage of our important resources and exciting course offerings through the Center for Community Partnerships. So please, read on! Jo Cates Library Director

Editing Digital Photos Using Photoshop
Explore common ways to edit your digital images. How and why should I re-size an image? What is DPI? Cropping? Masks? And color correction? Use Photoshop in this hands-on learning environment. Don’t have Photoshop? Everything covered can be done on Photoshop Elements (recommended) or GIMP as well. Basic computer skills and access to a computer or laptop (sorry no iPads) that has Photoshop or can download Photoshop Elements or GIMP is needed to be able to practice outside of class. Instructor: Mike Bisom (10 hr) 9/25-10/23 5 Thu 7-9p $99 No additional discount
Advanced Digital Camera
Interested in taking your photography beyond Digital Camera Basics? Begin with an overview of what the camera actually does, and you may be surprised. Take a more in-depth look at apertures, shutter, ISO, white-balance, focusing, depth-of-field and more. Bring your cameras! This is a hands-on class geared toward digital SLR’s but the principles learned can be applied to any camera with manual controls. Composition: The Art of Better Photos
Everyone wants to improve their pictures. Learn the #1 compositional rule and how it affects your images. Explore some of the more traditional rules such as framing, the rule of thirds, leading lines, and more. Bring in at least three images for review and critique. Don’t worry, it is an anonymous critique! Instructor: Mike Bisom (4 hr) 12/4-11

Principles of Lighting and Exposure
George Eastman once said, “Light makes photography.” Simply put, light is the brush by which a photograph creates an image. Light is the element needed to record an exposure. The camera can’t do anything about the quality or direction of light, so what makes one light better than another? Learn to understand the principle element in any image: light. The better you understand and use light to create exposure, the better your images. Instructor: Mike Bisom (4 hr) 10/30–11/6 2 Thu 7-9p $59 No additional discount
Using Your Camera Flash
Do you have a shoe mount flash? Want to get better images using the flash? This course is for you! Gain an understanding of the difference in flash metering and camera metering, discuss how to improve the quality of light through diffusion and/or bouncing, and study techniques that can freeze action with slow shutter speeds! This is a hands-on class so bring your camera! Instructor: Mike Bisom (4 hr) 11/13-20

Reasons To Be Pretty
A Caustic Comedy by Neil LeBute Though sticks and stones can break your bones, Neil LaBute knows that words hurt! In this edgy, contemporary comedy, Greg makes the mistake of calling a female coworker “hot”, while describing his girlfriend as “regular”. This overheard comparison throws his life into turmoil. Relationships at home and at work crumble, and four friends are forced to question their self-worth, amid deceit, insecurity and betrayal. Author of The Shape of Things and Fat Pig, LaBute is a powerful and poignant voice in the theatre confronting America’s unhealthy obsession with physical beauty.
