WELCOME CLASSMATES AND FELLOW ALUM! Welcome fellow alum! It is with great pleasure that the advisory board for UW-Parkside’s College of Natural and Health Sciences(CNHS) welcomes you back to your university. The tradition that you have become a part of has continued to progress over these many years. Numberous collaborations with other graduate and undergraduate programs continue to give many of our students opportunities we could have only dreamed about. We need to personally thank the current faculty and administration for providing the students these opportunities. Our alumni have responded very well when asked to contribute some of their time, talent and treasures. The CNHS board has established a scholarship fund that will allow two students a better opportunity to focus on their academic workloads. The board has had great support from the alumni, as the committees have become very active in our role to support and advise the staff and our university. On behalf of my fellow Advisory Board members and Dean Otu, I would like to continue to encourage you to become active in our university. Come to an Alumni event! Come to a University event! Follow us on Facebook. Opportunities abound where you can become involved and your efforts will not be wasted. You can help push the university forward. Put your Time, Talent and Treasure to work. Welcome back! Dr. Thomas Wood CNHS Advisory Board President

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN: On August 1, 2016 I began my fifth year as founding dean of the College of Natural and Health Sciences (CNHS). I continue to work with brilliant faculty and staff who are very dedicated to student’s success. CNHS faculty continue to engage our students in inquiry, providing the scientific education that is critical to produce scienceliterate citizens, as well as producing individuals who have deeper knowledge to make the big decisions in science and health. Welcome to this second annual College of Natural and Health Sciences (CNHS) Alumni Celebration. We hope it will be an opportunity for you to exchange stories with classmates whom you have lost touch with since graduation. CNHS Advisory Board members are delighted that you came and that we can also engage in conversations with you about your experiences while attending Parkside and where your education has led you. We would like to share your experiences with our current and future students. We know the possibilities are endless. We imagine “young” students being inspired by your story, which could push them through the metaphorical finish line. These conversations are a great reason to celebrate you. We are very proud of the accomplishments and contributions that our former students, you, add to our campus and in our communities. Nearly 70% of Parkside’s alumni reside in the region, so you may not even realize how many fellow alumni are also your colleagues and neighbors. That is another reason to celebrate! We continue to develop new programs that will serve the region. This fall semester, we are partnering with four other UW institutions, under UW-Extension administration, to offer a master’s degree in health and wellness management. Last month, the UW Board of Regents approved us to offer a master’s degree in sport management beginning fall 2017. The UW Board of Regents has also authorized our intent to plan a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling – we have a start date of fall 2018 in mind. The master’s degree in biological sciences is going through a redirection. Our students continue to attain great success. Students interested in health professions continue to attain acceptance rates to medical school twice the national average. Equally, our students place very well into graduate schools, or employment within their fields. To all alumni, I hope this event will continue to be one of many return visits to campus. I am personally grateful to the CNHS Advisory Board, hosting this event, for their vision to gather CNHS alumni last year. And, the yearning was high thus the gathering has become an annual event – this being the second! I am equally grateful for the Advisory Board guidance and support of the college for the past three years. Thank you for joining us to share memories from forty-six years ago or just last year. All of them are priceless to the College of Natural and Health Sciences students, faculty, staff, Advisory Board and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

AWARD PRESENTATION DR. MARK DECHECK Mark DeCheck’s successful family medicine practice had its beginnings at UW-Parkside. He graduated with majors in biology, chemistry, and German in 1979, and went on to medical school at UW-Madison. Mark then returned to the area for his residency through the Aurora-St. Catherine’s Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program, which was based at UW-Parkside. Mark has spent his career in private practice in Racine. In addition to supporting the health needs of individual patients and families, he is a dedicated leader for the local health community and medical practitioners statewide. However, if you want to truly engage Mark in a conversation tonight, you might ask him about his garden or one of the many indigenous varieties of trees making up UW-Parkside’s Dr. Anna Maria Williams Nature Trail. This trail is a living testament to the work of Dr. Anna Maria Williams, a long-time professor and the person who began our pre-health program so many years ago. Like his former professor, Mark is a passionate gardener and might have dedicated his life to the study of trees had he not chosen a life in medicine. And our community is fortunate that Mark did choose medicine as his career. He is dedicated to community health and has been on the Racine County Health Department Board for 25 years. He has been President of the Racine County Medical Society as well as long term Treasurer, and he also served two terms on the State Medical Society Board and remains on the Nominating Committee. Mark is also a director at Hospice Alliance and serves on several committees at Wheaton Franciscan Hospital.

AWARD PRESENTATION RAE WOOD Like many of our students today, Rae Wood grew up in Kenosha County. However, times were slightly different back then. The County was not nearly as populated. She grew up on a working farm performing chores, such as working in the fields, milking cows and helping in the kitchen. But, you couldn’t keep Rae down on the farm. With a relatively new University of Wisconsin campus just on the other side of the county, Rae set her goals on a college education and helping others. Graduating with a degree in medical technology Rae began her career at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and the University of Utah Hospital before turning her focus to family and volunteerism. Rae has been an active volunteer for many causes right here in southeastern Wisconsin, including education, 4H, youth sports, the Junior Woman’s Club, and the St. Martin’s Church food pantry. She was recognized as the Racine YWCA’s Woman of Distinction in 2002. Drawing on her background in healthcare, she is dedicated to community health. Rae was a board member for the Health Care Network of Racine for 12 years, and successfully took on the additional responsibility of leading all of the organization’s fundraising events. Her service had a tremendous impact. As the director of the Health Care Network told us, “It is not an exaggeration to state that thousands of health care appointments were made possible for the lowest-income residents of Racine County thanks to Rae’s leadership, skills, commitment and passion.” She is currently as a board member and volunteer coordinator for Koos for Kids, a local nonprofit organization that enhances the quality of life for children with terminal illness or special health needs. The leaders of Koos for Kids also lift up Rae for her passion for their mission and her commitment to the children they serve. Rae is married to her high school sweetheart and fellow UW-Parkside alum, Dr. Tom Wood. They have four daughters and now, four grandchildren. While she has done so much to raise successful children and grandchildren, she has also improved the lives of countless children in southeastern Wisconsin.

FALL 2016 CNHS SCHOLARSHIP HONOREES KAREN MCCARTER – APPLIED HEALTH SCIENCES My name is Karen McCarter, and I am an Applied Health Sciences major with a concentration in Pre-Physical Therapy. I came to Parkside with the knowledge that I wanted to further my ability to help others recover from injury and illness, to connect with and show compassion for those when they need it most. The faculty and staff at Parkside demonstrate such compassion and dedication to their students, and this was the deciding characteristic in my decision to attend Parkside. Over the course of my time here, I have founded an organization, maintained presidency of another, and arranged more health and wellness events than I can count. This could not have happened without supportive advisors and staff, and has developed within me a confidence that I hope to keep with me after I graduate from Parkside and continue on to a doctor of physical therapy program.

ANNA GASHI – CHEMISTRY My name is Anna Gashi, and I transferred here as an international student from Sweden about three years ago. Originally, I came here with the goal in mind to become a surgeon but much have changed since then. I am now a chemistry major with an interest in becoming chemical engineer or working in the field of materials science & engineering. Parkside has been a big help in creating, but more importantly maintaining, that goal for myself. The university has always provided with great academic and personal support which has truly helped me stay focused on what I aspire to achieve.

BRIAN SOCKNESS – GEOSCIENCES I’m Brian Sockness, a senior at UW-Parkside studying geoscience. I decided to attend UWParkside because it offered academic programs that fit my interests, while being able to remain in my hometown and close to my family. UW-Parkside has provided me with the valuable opportunity to participate one-on-one with my professors conducting research that has refined my ability to think critically about geologic problems and present findings clearly to a general audience. I believe these skills are essential for a geoscientist to be successful in their career and communicate the value of their work to others. After graduation, I desire to attend graduate school and expand upon the foundation of knowledge that UW-Parkside has given me.

MONICA DREA – HEALTH, EXERCISE AND SPORT MANAGEMENT I transferred to UW Parkside after completing one semester at UW Milwaukee. UW Milwaukee never felt like home and I think part of that was because of how big of a school it is compared to UW Parkside. Although I was not entirely sure of what I wanted to major in upon transferring to UW Parkside, I took a variety of classes my first semester and immediately knew that UW Parkside was the right fit for me. The smaller class sizes and attentive professors allowed me to feel confident in my decision of choosing to major in both Business Management and Sport Management. While being a student here I was able to internship with the City of Racine Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services Department and Racine Area Soccer Association. Upon completing both internships I was offered a paid part time position, both of which I was able to work, while taking a full class load each semester.

HANNAH YONKE – PSYCHOLOGY As a psychology major, I’ve been able to study under engaging, dedicated professors and participate in research on gender differences in and perceptions of STEM fields under Dr. Sylvia Beyer. My plans after graduation are uncertain, but I do intend to go on to graduate school and would enjoy teaching at the collegiate level. As a liberal arts university, Parkside has allowed me to study so many various topics that I’ve developed a love for learning almost anything, which is one of the reasons why I would like to be an educator one day - to instill that love in others.

COMMEMORATIVE PRINTS The College of Natural and Health Sciences (CNHS) in partnership with the Advising and Career Center created an internship to highlight our amazing UWP students. Art major Sabrina Miner crafted a limited edition set of prints, in recognition of the first CNHS Alumni Summer Celebration. Sabrina will continue to focus on her studio art, while seeking full time employment as a museum curator or a related field.

ARTIST STATEMENT: This image was carved out of a 9”x6” mounted linoleum block and printed on a heavy weight, white, 9”x12” paper. Each of the colors seen were printed separately, layering over the previous color. After a color was printed, more of the linoleum block’s surface was carved away. Together the three designs created a triptych, a three paneled composition which creates a larger image when seen as a whole. This design was produced to represent the University of Wisconsin Parkside’s College of Natural and Health Sciences Alumni Event. I wanted to present you with a visual depiction of what this college looks like when different areas of study are brought together. I hope you enjoy this beautiful imagery as much as I enjoyed creating it. -Sabrina Miner
