Distinctive Features & Keys to Our Students’ Success • We are dedicated to the education of our students, connecting education to the greater world around us, and providing an excellent variety of experiential learning opportunities.
• We strongly encourage our students to be participatory citizens. In 2013-2014, students in Philosophy classes participated in civic engagement projects with local community organizations.
• We are committed to preparing students to be critical thinkers, decision makers, appreciative of social justice, and global citizens. These qualities make our students competitive in nearly any field of their choice after graduation from Parkside.
• Small class sizes offer students substantial personal attention and advising and the ability to work collaboratively on research projects.
• Interdisciplinary approach. Our programs have a distinct social science and liberal arts orientation. This means that you will take courses across the university. With such a broad range of courses, you will have the flexibility to personalize your course of study.
• Sociology and anthropology students go on archeological digs around the region and have discovered artifacts that date back almost 13,000 years. Students have traveled to Chiapas, Mexico, to work with and learn from the autonomous Zapatista movement. Every year students participate in the Model EU, a simulation of European organizational decision making.
• Excellence in teaching. Students benefit from our faculty who bring a variety of timely and professional experiences into the classroom. Our faculty are nationally, regionally, and locally recognized for their work with students and several have received the Stella C. Gray Teaching Excellence Award.
• Highly qualified working professionals from the region bring essential skills and experiences to our classrooms as part-time instructors. Examples are the local district attorney’s office, supervisory/administrative positions in the Department of Corrections, and the public defender’s office in Milwaukee County.

Social Sciences Kaleidoscope The Social Sciences Kaleidoscope is a project designed to give students the opportunity to use social media to share what they are learning and researching in the social sciences. Students selected for the program receive a stipend and choose how they would like to document their learning and engage their peers, whether through Vine, YouTube, podcasts, tumblr, or some other form of social media. Last spring, Jenn, a Geography major, used tumblr to examine her experiences in the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) certificate program. Check it out here: scientistjz.tumblr.com
