“We continue to give and have increased our giving through the years because of all the magical moments that happen at our dinner table.... We hear about the teacher who thought to bring a book from home that my daughter might like, the school director who showed great interest in my son’s track relay teams, the head of Middle School who always encouraged my daughter to sing and perform, and the elective teachers who light a fire under my kids daily with their passion for the subjects.” Jane Groos, parent of Dylan ‘15 and Savannah ‘17

FROM THE DIRECTOR Greetings from the finish line for our Centennial Campaign, from One School, welcoming Our Future. After thousands of gifts, over several years, we reached and exceeded a goal set by combining some historic commitments. We made doubling our young and modest endowment a top priority. We knew it was time to restore and renovate our iconic McKim, Mead, and White school home here on Edgehill Avenue. We knew the value of investing in the next round of innovative classroom initiatives imagined by our faculty. And we understood the importance of sustaining the growth in annual giving to fuel every dimension of daily life at USN. What difference have we made? Students from all family backgrounds are here with need-based aid from newly endowed funds. There’s a new teaching chair to recognize outstanding work early in a career. Every square inch of the building works better than ever, from the foundation to the fourth floor, 20yard swimming pool included. Our faculty create curriculum projects with colleagues from Vanderbilt University, then share that work with schools nationwide. We’ve learned anew the lessons of a determined effort by the breadth of a school community working together. My sense is that we set a good example for the children in our midst. And forward we go.

After thousands of gifts, over several years, we reached and

FROM THE BOARD When Betty and Bernard Werthan began making calls from their dining room table in 1975, it’s unlikely they calculated the impact Peabody Demonstration School would have four decades later. Instead, they were focused on overcoming the immediate financial barriers to keep PDS doors open and classrooms engaging for their children. Fast forward to this ambitious six-year Campaign for the successor to the Demonstration School and its intent to provide long-term financial support as well as immediate-use dollars, restore and renovate the historic building, invest in academic innovation, and build endowment. Still the core of its focus remains the same as during the transition: keeping doors open and classrooms engaging for our children. With your gifts, we have been able to underwrite curriculum development, build diversity initiatives, expand global experiences for faculty and students, endow new scholarships and faculty funds, construct new campus spaces, and refurbish our original 1925 building. Your gifts will have lasting impacts for years to come. More than a century since its founding, the University School of Nashville of today is an educational destination known for its academic excellence, commitment to diversity, and community involvement. Thank you for your continued support of our school for the future.

FROM THE STEERING COMMITTEE We embarked on an ambitious effort six years ago when we set out to raise $1 million for the renovation and expansion of the Sperling Cafeteria. Almost 30 families made that project possible, and over the following years more than 3,600 additional families from coast to coast shared philanthropic support to invest in University School of Nashville and its future. As we expanded our goal to raise $28 million for endowment, facilities, academic initiatives, and the Annual Fund, each gift was a vote of confidence in USN and makes learning opportunities available at USN every day. We are proud to announce we exceeded our expectations and raised $29.5 million for One School. Our Future., more than doubled our endowment, supported professional development for faculty, grew financial aid for students, expanded community partnerships with an academic summer enrichment camp, and added thousands of square feet to our Edgehill campus. In my time here as a student, alumna, parent, and board member, never have I been more proud to be a part of the PDS/USN community. We are incredibly grateful for and humbled by your support and love for our school. This philanthropic support will continue to sustain the mission and vision for USN. The pride that you’ve instilled will be ours forevermore.

Teri Doochin Kasselberg ’73 Chair, Campaign Steering Committee

In my time here as a student, alumna, parent, and board member, never have I been more proud to be a part of the PDS/USN community.

Led by Teri Doochin Kasselberg ‘73 (second from left), the Campaign Steering Committee shepherded the way with generous gifts and tireless dedication to see this historic Campaign to a successful conclusion. Standing in celebration with Teri are current Board President Brett Sweet, Trustee Bob Gordon, Past President Gail Williams, Past President David Kloeppel, and Director Vince Durnan. Honorary Trustee John Hassenfeld ‘75 is not pictured.

Just outside of the new windowed tower, the May Plaza is the welcoming main entrance from 19th Avenue South for students, faculty, parents, alumni, and prospective families. Its ribbon cutting Aug. 10, 2014 began the school’s Centennial celebration. It since has become a popular Middle School hangout spot after school and the site of the back-to-school Popsicle Party.

“In the mid-1920s Gertrude and Mortimer May decided to enroll their first child, Reba May ’38, in Peabody Demonstration School. Then in 1934, Dorothy and Dan May, their brother, enrolled their first child, Jack May ’47, in PDS. Since then there has always been at least one of their descendants enrolled in PDS or University School of Nashville. Now that is 90 years and dozens of May family members enjoying superb education on Edgehill Avenue. The May Plaza gift is a gesture of the families’ gratitude to this fine institution.” Jack May ‘47

ENDOWMENT When this Campaign began, we set out to double our endowment to $20 million. Thanks to the generous support of outright and planned gifts from many alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends, Campaign gifts and pledges totaled $10.9 million, exceeding our $10 million goal. We established 36 new named endowment funds supporting scholarships, faculty, programs, and our general endowment. Each endowed scholarship will preserve the strength of our student body and reduce the pressure of financial aid on our operating budget. Endowed funds for faculty support give us the resources to meet our desire to pay teachers in the top quartile nationally. We also are able to provide continuing education and curriculum development opportunities for faculty as an investment in our future as innovators. Program funds help sustain our curriculum and best educational practices. These designated endowment funds, along with the general endowment, will help strengthen and secure our future. Bovender Family Faculty Chair honors excellent teaching High School math teacher Justin Fitzpatrick is the second instructor to hold the Bovender Family Faculty Chair, a three-year seat previously held by Middle School math teacher Joel Bezaire. Barbara and Jack Bovender, their son, Richard ’97, and his wife, Sara, made the $1 million gift in 2013 to ensure the school can continue to meet its commitment to life-changing teaching. The Bovender family has been loyal to University School of Nashville for many years, with Richard serving on the National Alumni Board of Visitors and Barbara having served on the Board of Trustees. The family’s endowment supports the faculty chair holder’s salary, curriculum development work in the summer, and activities that enhance the chair holder’s teaching effectiveness, including study, research, and professional meetings. “We celebrate someone with deep subject knowledge, with a transitive property capacity to share that love of subject with students regardless of prior interest, someone who is really good, and I quote from student comments, ‘at explaining stuff,’” said Director Vince Durnan when announcing the award at Convocation this past spring. “We celebrate an old-school personality with new concept interests and curiosity that ends up being avant-garde, a pioneer with a pick and shovel work ethic.” Dr. Fitz, as he is called by students, added, “If this award is in some way a recognition that I am succeeding in my lifelong effort to contribute to this school as much as I get from it, then that would be a very great thing indeed. But if it is not, then I will continue to exhaust myself in an effort to balance that checkbook.”

“The USN experience has been one of excellence for our children. It is an honor to think that through our help, USN can continue to provide a uniquely enriching academic culture. It is also our responsibility to do all we can to support USN as it continues to be innovative through lessons both inside the classroom and outside as well as in the greater Nashville community.” Amy Shepard, parent of Eleanor ’23 and Coco ’27

ANNUAL FUND The Annual Fund fuels every aspect of this remarkable studentcentered education. These immediate-use dollars make many uniquely USN programs possible here every day, every year. As our endowment gains ground, the strength of our annual giving remains essential to our pursuit of educational excellence. Over six years, we raised $8.3 million for the Annual Fund. Our Annual Fund now averages almost $1.5 million a year with support from faculty, trustees, parents, alumni, grandparents, and friends. Most recently, the entire Class of 2017 gave during its senior year, and a first grader saved his allowance and asked his family and friends to match his gift. The Annual Fund’s relative strength by national standards is a testament to this community’s philanthropic commitment to University School of Nashville.

Put to good use in each classroom, Annual Fund contributions benefit every student and teacher and provide the resources required to make USN an extraordinary school. It broadly supports faculty development, need-based financial aid, academic programming, visual and performing arts, athletics and lifelong wellness, and campus and environmental stewardship.

Parent association supports multiple facets of school with more than $1 million in total giving Through its highly-regarded community and USN-only events, the University School of Nashville Association has raised more than $1 million during this Campaign to renovate campus spaces, build endowment, and make essential purchases for school life. Music Night, an intimate concert featuring a faculty-staff band and notable parent performers, raised more than $49,000 over two years to bring new elevated bleachers to the River Campus, giving USN Tigers more opportunities to host tournaments and events. The upgrades for USN sports programs, also made possible by Tiger Club, were part of the overall sidewalk expansion, and their installation on 70-yard concrete pads allows for greater accessibility and connectivity between fields. Fall Book Frenzy proceeds were used to renovate the Hassenfeld Library lobby into a study lounge for students. Tiger Arts Patrons, a subset of USNA supporting visual and performing arts, upgraded Auditorium microphones. Bonus Bucks banked through everyday shopping have benefited Lower, Middle, and High School special projects. Artclectic, an annual art sale and show, contributed just over $300,000 to the Artclectic Endowment for Innovative Teaching during this Campaign and allowed students to learn directly from visiting artists. Evening Classes, a collection of after-hours classes for the community, added more than $234,000 to the need-based scholarship endowment fund and celebrates its 25th year in 2018. USNA not only directs fundraisers but also provides volunteer assistance for the school and promotes an enduring sense of community by hosting parent socials, facilitating carpools, preparing appreciation breakfasts and lunches for faculty and staff, and serving as room parents for students and teachers. Our school and this community would not be as strong if it were not for their support.

Since joining USN in 2000, Vince has handed diplomas to 1,510 graduates, written more than 30,000 thank you notes to donors, earned a Doctorate in Education from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University, written a chapter for the “NAIS Head’s Handbook,” and visited more than 30 schools nationwide to survey the educational reform landscape.

Scholarship named for Director A small group of founding families collectively gave $1 million to create the Vincent W. Durnan, Jr. Scholarship Program, which will provide students with need-based financial aid for years to come. The scholarship fundraising was a well-guarded secret until unveiled to him during a donor dinner with surprise appearances by his daughters and USN alumnae Avery ’07, Nani ’09, and Julia ’11. Vince, who joined USN in 2000, called the surprise “heartwarming and inspiring.” Board Past President David Kloeppel added, “Vince has committed his heart and soul to the excellence of this institution. From faculty to students to programs to facilities, he has left no stone unturned in his efforts to make this school the best it can be for our children and our community. We want to honor his contributions and the remarkable legacy he is creating at USN, while also inspiring him to continue to do incredible work.”

Summer enrichment camp broadens Horizons The scope of Horizons continues to stretch its reach to avoid summer learning loss in elementary-aged students living in South Nashville. The free academic enrichment summer camp at USN began with rising first graders in 2014 and has expanded by one grade level each year to include four grades in 2017. Teachers from USN and Carter-Lawrence Elementary School, the home school of most campers, lead the program. Campers study math, reading, science, and writing in the classroom and through field trips to local landmarks, restaurants, the Tennessee Aquarium, Mayor’s Office, and more. In addition to swimming in the afternoons, they go through a rotation of performing and fine arts, computer programming, and sports. “It is great for families to know they have a safe place where their kids are going to be challenged and learn academically outside of the classroom for summer after summer at zero cost to them,” said Horizons Executive Director Sam Jackson. To further assist with each family’s commitment, USN provides transportation to and from Carter-Lawrence Elementary School as well as breakfast, lunch, and snacks daily. Horizons at USN will add one grade level annually until it reaches 120 students who are rising first through eighth graders. The program is funded solely through philanthropic support.

Daily swimming classes in USN’s pool build trust and self-esteem, qualities that carry over to the classroom. Horizons aims to give campers the tools and support necessary to become successful and confident college-bound students. They gain an average of two to three months in reading and math skills through lessons and field trips that make learning fun.

This historic Campaign coincided with our Centennial celebration. Near the new 19th Avenue lobby, both are commemorated on a wall recognizing leadership donors. The gifts of these philanthropists support our students, faculty, and staff and have laid a strong financial foundation for years to come.

“USN was an opportunity for me to get the best education available in an environment where I always felt accepted…. I learned a lot in my four years about myself, my peers, and my place as an African-American Muslim girl in America. It’s important for kids like me, who grew up thinking certain opportunities would never be available to them, to know that places like USN exist and that the possibilities are truly endless.” Hawo Ibrahim ’17 Heber and Fran Rogers Scholarship recipient Freshman at Duke University

“I love teaching at USN because teachers here care about the learning process and are able to teach in ways that respond to students’ needs. USN faculty are deeply collaborative but also able to pursue pedagogical strategies that allow us to teach from a place of personal conviction and intellectual honesty. We pursue our subject matter in a way that satisfies our students’ curiosity and our own curiosity as well. Such an experience is unique to USN.” Dean Masullo, High School English teacher

“I am grateful to explore what learning looks like beyond our traditional brick-and-mortar classrooms. The E.E. Ford Grant has enabled me to develop a computer science course for the Malone Schools Online Network. The process of designing a curriculum tailored for students in four different time zones to meet by video conference has enhanced my understanding of how students learn, and it continues to positively impact my teaching in traditional classroom settings as well. Siffat Hingorani ’08, High School mathematics teacher

“Soon after our youngest child graduated from USN, we decided to endow a faculty enrichment fund. Each of our three children benefited tremendously from USN’s supportive faculty, challenging academic curriculum, and diverse student body. USN had been an integral part of our world. We recognized how much our entire family had gained from this opportunity, and we wanted to give back. We made a gift we hope will have lasting impact — a family endowment fund dedicated to supporting USN faculty.” Grace & Carl Awh

“USN’s abundance of student-led programs gave me the opportunity to work alongside esteemed, devoted faculty members, allowed me to develop invaluable leadership skills both in and out of the classroom, and energized me in my discovery of my strengths and passions. I’ve entered college with a concrete ability to hone in on my next four years with focus and direction, a quality for which I owe my high school experience — and especially my teachers — a great debt.” Isaiah Frank ’17 Garrison Family Scholarship recipient Freshman at Northwestern University

“Our family has been very fortunate to travel to many places around the world and experience many different cultures. We strongly believe the world is a classroom. We love USN and wanted to share our love of travel with other students in the USN community. We established The Conner Family Travel Endowment to allow other USN students the ability to travel internationally to experience the many lessons the world has to offer.” Dan Conner

“My experience in Ghana at Cross Cultural Collaborative allowed me a unique and in-depth opportunity to get to know the people of Ghana, to feel their warm and welcoming spirits, and to understand the struggles in their daily lives. I witnessed patience and sharing like I have never seen before and observed art, music, and dance in every single person. I am glad to bring what I learned back to my students at USN. Delia Seigenthaler, High School art teacher Recipient of Helen Meador Travel Fellowship

Is your name missing? The Honor Roll of Donors contains names of individuals, organizations, corporations, and foundations who made gifts or pledges to University School of Nashville during the One School. Our Future. Campaign between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2017. Donors to the Sperling Cafeteria renovation project in spring 2011 are also recognized here. Gifts to any area of University School of Nashville, including capital projects, endowment, academic initiatives, the Annual Fund, planned gift intentions, matching gifts, and soft credit gifts (e.g. gifts via your foundation or business) were included in your total Campaign giving. There could be several reasons your name does not appear in what you believe to be the appropriate giving level or does not appear at all:

1. You made your gift either before July 1, 2011 or after June 30, 2017.

2. Your name may be listed in another giving level.

3. We made a mistake. While we make every effort to ensure every donor is listed correctly, we may have overlooked or misspelled your name. Please accept our apologies, and contact us at 615-329-4423 or nsewell@usn.org so we may correct our records.
