Dear friends in USN, What’s the philanthropic story from 2018-2019, the year that featured our 100th Commencement? It’s a tale of breadth combining with a depth of support. In the midst of the city’s breakneck change, University School of Nashville built on some constants. Nothing exotic and nothing easy – we counted on the connective fabric of this community.
Head of Middle School Jeff Greenfield ’84 Head of High School Quinton P. Walker Athletic Director Josh Scouten Chief Financial Officer Teresa Standard Communications Director Juanita I.C. Traughber Director of Admissions and Financial Aid Juliet Douglas Director of AFTER-SCHOOL and MSAS Rebecca Stokes Director of Development Anne Westfall Director of Office of Diversity and Community Life Roderick White Director of Operations Erik Mash ’93 Director of Technology Kathy Wieczerza Library Director Mary Buxton
The results merit sharing: more than 90% of parents chose to give, a planned gift created another endowed teaching chair, a record number of our 4,000+ alumni stepped forward altogether generating what is the biggest total since the Centennial celebration. Behind those numbers stand dozens and dozens of volunteers and a set of compelling reasons to give. Special gratitude extends to parent chairs Joanna and Anders Hall, to alumni leaders Liz Werthan ’56, Simone Leblon ’78, Sneha Channabassappa Oakley ’94, Andrew Brandon ’97, to parent of alumni chairs Pam and Mike Koban, and to grandparent chairs Sherry and Mark Deutschmann. Our continued quest to maximize the difference made by every dollar while building the resource base year by year is bearing fruit. Look first to our Board for the reason why it’s been possible. At the top of that list find the incomparable Brett Sweet, whose now-concluded term as President kept us always pointed forward. By the time you read this note, we’ll be deep into the new year, with aspirations to be worthy of all the efforts that brought us this far. Educational leadership takes teamwork, courage, commitment, and creativity — we owe that to you in our donor community, and we take none of this for granted. nn With renewed purpose,
Vincent W. Durnan, Jr. Director

Thank you. Although those words are yet a simple expression of appreciation, they more than aptly carry the weight of my gratitude for your support of University School of Nashville. Your gifts, on many levels and through volunteered time and in-kind donations, have allowed USN to continue to provide program and facility enhancements critical to meeting the needs of the USN community while adhering to competitive educational standards and being a good neighbor to the Edgehill community and Nashville city at large.
We’ve added a new faculty chair to recognize excellence in science and math, created an endowed scholarship fund for need-based financial aid, and had the most fruitful year yet for our Annual Fund and Horizons academic enrichment program. And most heartening, we’ve stepped closer to fulfilling our desire to mirror the city’s diversity while investing in our students, faculty, and staff’s understanding and practice of inclusiveness. As I conclude my term as a USN parent and as President of the Board of Trustees, I couldn’t be prouder of all we have accomplished together through your philanthropy and with your everyday investments in USN’s greatest assets — our students and teachers. nn Glad to continue to watch our beloved school thrive from across 21st Avenue and as a parent of alumni,

Exploring grading equality
University School of Nashville hosted the National Association of Independent Schools’ Equity Design Lab: Grading for Equity in July. The two-day workshop challenged independent school faculty, academic deans, and administrators to expand their repertoires by upending traditional grading practices that reward content knowledge over learning. More than a dozen Middle and High School faculty attended the design lab alongside colleagues from 85 schools across the country.
throughout the world, such as those highlighted on pages 10-14. We are grateful for the role these gifts play in making experiences like these possible for our deserving teachers and staff.
“This conference really challenged my ideas about some of my teaching more than anything in a long time,” said the USN veteran of 35 years before listing questions it raised. “Is the 100-point grading system really fair when, in fact, 60 percent of our grading scale is weighted toward the zero? Should we be focusing on scoring a student’s achievement based over time or should we be focused on scoring their achievement on what they have learned and can do at the end of a course? Do our grades reflect the students’ behavior or their learning?”

Meador grant takes Wiley to Spain Third Grade Teacher Sarah Wiley used the Helen Meador Summer International Travel Fellowship to spend time immersing herself in Spanish culture and learning about art therapy. The grant allows faculty to explore a concept that connects with their teaching and learning while abroad. During a two-week workshop at the Metàfora Centre for Art Therapy Studies, Wiley studied theory and history behind art therapy, dissected case studies, experienced group play with art supplies, and debriefed with her international colleagues in group circles. They finished the program by piecing together brightly colored shards to make a Trencadís, an art form popularized by Antoni Gaudí. “I have been interested in art therapy for many years and had been exploring and observing how art could promote emotional, developmental, and cognitive growth in my classroom. This course provided an introduction,” Wiley said. “One of the most amazing things was connecting with all these different women representing Ukraine, Turkey, India, Scotland, Austria, Portugal, Cyprus, and Israel. They were teachers, therapists, and art students.” She plans to incorporate art into mindfulness practice and meditation to help students process and share identity as well as as well as to strengthen the connection between USN and the Edgehill community through art.
(Above) Sarah Wiley and peers completed their study of art therapy by creating a Gaudí inspired mosaic. (Right) Sarah outside of Metàfora Centre for Art Therapy Studies in Barcelona, Spain.
While abroad, Kindergarten Teacher Karri Leslie and First Grade Teacher Lizzie Ammerman visited Wiley and spent time with her touring in Placa D’osca, La Sagrada Família, museums, and other historical sites. Connecting with colleagues helped her to process what she learned. She and Ammerman also got to hear from Catalans about why they are passionate about independence from Spain. They visited Cervera with a family of a retired third grade teacher whose granddaughter Sarah's parents once hosted in the States. nn

USN co-hosts equity, inclusion conference University School of Nashville hosted a few dozen visitors from around the country and helped plan a diversity, equity, and inclusion conference that brought more than 6,500 people to the Music City Center. The People of Color Conference allowed more than four dozen USN faculty and staff to have a common professional development opportunity just blocks from USN’s midtown campus. Head of High School Quinton P. Walker and HS Counselor Beth Eberl co-chaired the local PoCC committee on which Office of Diversity and Community Life Director Roderick White, HS Dean of Students Nicole Jules, and Second Grade Teacher Victoria Roca also served to plan the event. A conference of the National Association of Independent Schools, PoCC promotes equity and justice in teaching, learning, and organizational development at private schools. During the conference, administrators, faculty, and staff participated in seminars, peer-led workshops, affinity group discussions, and general sessions with keynote speakers. “Any chance I can have to help create space for people to learn, reflect, and connect around matters of equity

is one I'll gladly take. It's my sincerest hope that my colleagues — both here at USN and across the country — take away an increased sense of competence when it comes to the work of supporting more just school communities,” Walker said. “Some will have a renewed sense of purpose and energy after the conference, a rededication to leading the charge of inclusivity at their schools. Others will enlarge their skill set and add new tools to their repertoire. Some will consider the concept of allyship and what it means to their respective schools. Still others will forge connections, building the professional network that's essential to thriving in independent schools.” Some 50 colleagues from independent schools across the country visited USN the first day of the conference. Teams of faculty and students led them through school tours before breakout sessions with division heads. Jadyn Sheats ’22 spoke on her eighth grade Change Project and her work with the Office of Diversity and Community Life to increase cultural awareness and inclusivity at USN. White shared the work of the school’s four diversity committees: outreach, hiring & retention, cultural competency, and curriculum, and he also shared some of the programs and initiatives the school has taken to fulfill its mission to

Helping Early Career Teachers Learn How to Navigate the Trickiest Moments.” The panel, including Jules, White, HS English Department Chair Freya Sachs ’00, and HS History Teacher Matthew Haber ’98, prepared faculty to guide students through sensitive conversations, to debrief inappropriate behaviors, and to make classrooms safe and supportive spaces. Isha Upender ’19 also performed a traditional South Indian dance during a general session. Concurrently, six USN students attended the Student Diversity Leadership Conference, a multiracial, multicultural gathering of HS students designed to develop cross-cultural communication skills, design effective strategies for social justice practice through dialogue and the arts, and learn the foundations of allyship and networking principles. “SDLC was an enlightening experience for me. Language instructors study comprehensible input World Language faculty across all three divisions attended the International Forum on Language Teaching to gain skills to teach language proficiency. The conference focused on contemporary instructional methods and activities such as comprehensible input, movie talk, and embedded reading. Using these techniques, students can naturally acquire a second language and reach proficiency, the ultimate goal for language teaching.
Kelly said. “I'm especially looking forward to encouraging my department colleagues and helping guide them through their questions and new practices.”
Cracraft said she plans to incorporate some of the instructional methods into her daily lessons and gradually add activities like viewing films without sound and discussing short segments before rewatching with sound to enhance students’ learning experiences. Moore learned teaching a few useful, meaningful expressions and their proper contexts can be a great way to get students to participate in daily conversations from USN language teachers at the conference were: Waldir Sepulveda, Josephine Huang-Yeh, Mei-Yen Cracraft, Arcelia Vázquez, Martha Moore, Richard Rosenthal, and Sibley Edwards Kelly ’91. day one.
Middle School Spanish Teacher Sibley Kelly previously attended the conference and was glad to take with her to St. Petersburg, Florida this year colleagues representing every division and teaching every language USN offers: Spanish Teachers Waldir Sepulveda and Arcelia Vázquez, Chinese Teachers Josephine Huang-Yeh and Mei-Yen Cracraft, French Teacher Martha Moore, and Middle School Latin Teacher Richard Rosenthal.
“After two years of trying this out feeling a little blind, I've found some support in building a unit and backward planning. I feel validated in all the things I've been trying for the last two years, and I'm going to build a yearlong curriculum and share it with my colleagues,”
16
“Perhaps the most valuable experience that I can take away from the iFLT is the opportunity that I had to converse with other teachers about teaching strategies and practices, especially the conversations that I had with other teachers from USN. Being with other colleagues from your own school at a conference for several days gives you the chance to share ideas and even to envision new projects for the future,” Sepulveda said. nn

The vibrant service work of volunteers throughout campus is a bedrock of USN. The University School of Nashville Association enlists USN parents, families, alumni, friends, faculty, and staff to advance the educational experiences of our students. Through five hallmark fundraising events and myriad everyday activities, USNA fosters a spirit of community and supports the school with needed services and resources. Although USNA raises nearly $200,000 for the school year after year, the true value of its work is immeasurable.

USNA President Reflection Tonia Klein stepped up as kindergarten room parent eight years ago, soon graduated from the blue door classroom to collecting and sorting books with Fall Book Frenzy in Cheek Gym, and has increased her commitment to the school each year. Now the outgoing USNA President may be most remembered for bringing joy to classrooms and offices across campus by dropping off baked goods — including at least half a dozen king cakes around Mardi Gras. 2018-2019 USNA President Tonia Klein with her family: Alex ’28, husband Jeff, and Ellie ’25. “As a new parent, (volunteering) helped me to connect with other parents and get to know faculty and staff,” said Klein, Under Klein’s leadership with the work of 638 volunteers, parent of Ellie ’25 and Alex ’28. “Volunteering gives you USNA raised more than $190,000 for the endowment, a complete perspective of the school — how things work, the Hassenfeld Library, arts, and athletics through its five how different teachers function, and how what you are annual philanthropic events. doing impacts faculty, parents, and students.”
Klein said she enjoyed seeing the behind-the-scenes work and play that made USNA’s fundraising events successful and that the overwhelming kindness of fellow parents was moving. Her time as president-elect and president yielded memories and friendships she said she’ll never forget.

“It is meaningful because everything we do reaches every corner of the school in some way. We are in the library, in classrooms, at sporting events, at theatrical events. We raise money for innovative teaching and need-based scholarships. It allows so much more to happen, and it enriches the experiences of the school. It is also meaningful because of the community that we build with our faculty and staff and our students. USNA cements USN as a home for a lot of people.” nn

USNA Volunteer Spotlight Andrew Sloane insists he is just another volunteer.
“These are all things that a lot of us do. There are certainly people who have done more than I have. I’ve gone a mile wide but an inch deep, but other people have gone a mile deep,” he said, brushing off the hours he’s contributed to making USN the best school it can be for his children, Aurelia ’27 and Henry ’29. “(Volunteering) is important to us because it shows our kids not just that we make donations of money but that we make donations of time for the things that we care most about,” Sloane said of himself and his wife, Danielle.
USNA Volunteer Andrew Sloan with his family: Aurelia ’27, wife Danielle, Peter, and Henry ’29.
Their first year as USN parents, he forayed into USNA life by sharing ideas to expand the Bonus Bucks program. The following year, he spent time encouraging families to deem USN their charity of choice through their online retail accounts to raise funds while doing their everyday shopping. Since then Sloane has gotten to know other USN parents by flipping burgers with Dads’ Alliance and operating carnival games during Fall Fest, pushing a hospitality cart and handing out snacks to artists during Artclectic,
sorting books during Fall Book Frenzy, preparing math flash cards and compiling worksheets as a Helping Hand, and shuttling canned goods collected by students to an Edgehill food bank. “I got involved at USN in order to get to know more families and because it sets a positive example for our kids to see me volunteering my time to help their school,” he said. “I plan to continue volunteering at USN in various ways as our kids enter the Middle and High Schools because I have enjoyed getting to know the other volunteers, and I want to help make USN a special place for all our kids to learn and grow.” nn

For the sixth consecutive summer, USN welcomed a community of public school students from the Edgehill neighborhood and beyond to enjoy its beautiful campus for six weeks of learning and adventure. Eighty-five students from low-income families, ranging from grades 1 through 6, spent their Horizons days participating in collaborative academic projects, personalized small-group literacy tutoring, confidence-building swim lessons, and a variety of enrichment activities. The mission of the Horizons at USN program through all these different pieces is to combat summer learning loss by providing its students with the opportunities other children have access to during their school break. In the summer of 2019, rising first graders grew from being nervous to submerging their faces in the water to being able to swim across the pool on their own. Rising third graders completed an immersive unit on outer space, wrote a research report on a planet, sculpted a space-scene diorama, and traveled to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The oldest two grades, rising fifth and sixth graders, spent two of six weeks attending half-day USN Summer Camps and diving deep into topics including coding, engineering, painting, and biology. They created their own video games, built roller coasters, painted self-portraits, and dissected squids. All the while, scholars sharpened their fundamental academic skills through daily practice and instruction. Over the six-week summer program, Horizons students show on average two to three months of growth in reading and math. The support of the USN community, donors from across the country, volunteers from throughout Nashville, and dedicated and passionate staff allows Horizons students to return to Metro Nashville Public Schools confident and prepared for further learning. nn

A Transformational Gift: The RISER High School Program
The Board of Trustees decided in 2014 to bring the Horizons program to the campus of USN and the Nashville community, and the generosity of individuals and local foundations provided funding to ensure the stability of the program through its first three summers. Their goal was simple: to help students from low-income families in the Edgehill community combat summer learning loss by providing a safe, consistent, nurturing, and academic environment for students in elementary and middle school. Little did we fully understand at the time: the true need for such a program and the relationships that would form with our Horizons families and public school partners; the social, emotional, and academic impact on Horizons students; and, the sense of togetherness and commitment that would develop within the community. Today, Horizons has become a model academic enrichment program for the city of Nashville with 85 students enrolled in grades 1-6 and representing more than 16 public and charter schools. For the past six summers, we’ve shared our stories of academic growth and successes of Horizons students. Recognizing our once-rising first grader students are now two summers away from completing their Horizons experience caught the attention of the RISER Foundation, which stepped forward with a $750,000 challenge pledge to develop and launch the RISER High School program at Horizons starting in summer 2022. This funding will provide support to our inaugural group until they graduate from high school. These Horizon scholars will continue to be shepherded through the crucial years of high school. Like our founding funders, the RISER Foundation has challenged us to think forward and implement a high school program that will allow students to attend for 12 consecutive summers and will provide students with the tools and resources to be successful college-bound students and productive citizens in our community. nn

USN’s philanthropic support got a big boost in the 2018-2019 fiscal year. The $1.5 million goal for the Annual Fund was exceeded by $178,982 thanks to the generosity of 2,181 donors. These important resources fuel every aspect of USN’s remarkable, student-centered educational experience. Annual Fund dollars allow USN to say “yes” to exciting opportunities for students and faculty every day: opportunities in curriculum and in the programs that complement it, in excellent arts and athletics, in technology initiatives, and in other educational innovations. Participation from all over our community showed significant increases. USN parents stepped up in a big way with 93% participation. Both kindergarten and first grade families reached 100% participation, and fifth grade families were close behind at 99%. Alumni donors increased by 147 with a total of 972 PDS/USN alumni making a philanthropic gift to the school. Some 370 parents of alumni made a generous gift to USN along with 165 grandparents. One of the best parts of the Annual Fund is seeing support coming in from across the country at every level of gift. In fact, about half of donors to the Annual Fund make a gift of $100 or less; those dollars totaled $60,533. What does that mean to USN? These gifts equal need-based financial aid for at least three students, a faculty/staff position, or professional development opportunities for several faculty and staff. Over 100 parent and alumni volunteers had thousands of conversations with members of the USN community about the importance of supporting Every Tiger, Every Day to make the Annual Fund a tremendous success. nn

1915 Leadership Society Named for the founding year of USN’s predecessor, Peabody Demonstration School, the 1915 Leadership Society honors Annual Fund donors whose generous, unrestricted support of USN maintains our financial strength. This year 293 families made gifts of $1,915 or greater for a collective impact of $1,187,200. The society saw a large increase in size with 80 families making their first leadership gift this year. We are proud to recognize these donors who represent the wide range of diversity found in our community and the incredible investment they have made to support the mission and students of USN.

Tiger Give Back Challenge On March 28, 2019, the Tiger Give Back Challenge set a new bar for USN’s single day of giving. In 24 hours, $185,872 was raised from 866 alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff, grandparents, parents of alumni, and other supporters. Tiger pride activities were planned throughout the challenge, including the first Kick-Off Party hosted by Dru Potash Bredesen ’98 and Ben Bredesen ’98 at Fat Bottom Brewery. The USN pep band and cheerleaders greeted students at both entrances to the school the morning of the challenge to get families pumped up. Keeping the activities going, over 50 volunteers (including parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and members of the Board of Trustees) participated in a 12-hour connect-a-thon where they called, texted, and emailed thousands of members of the USN community across the country. Matching gifts were a big part of the success of the Tiger Give Back Challenge. Director Vince Durnan generously upgraded gifts of any alumni he gave diplomas in the Classes of 2001 through 2018. Vince inspired Head of High School Quinton Walker to make a similar offer to the Classes of 2017 and 2018. Dr. Walker even texted a fun selfie to all of his alumni with a link to give for extra inspiration. Thanks to their generosity, nine of the top 10 class participation rates were some of our youngest alumni. Another new opportunity that motivated our PDS/USN alumni to participate was the first Alumni Bracket Challenge. Taking inspiration from March Madness, states and regions around the world competed for the highest participation percentage during the 24-hour giving day, with elimination cutoff times throughout the day. More than 50 alumni served as captains and rallied their classmates and neighbors to give. Tennessee and Illinois made it to the final round, and Illinois alumni emerged as our champions. Vince traveled to Chicago over the summer to celebrate with the winners and threw down the gauntlet for another state to win in 2020. nn Other points of Tiger pride n 161 people made their first-ever gifts, including 100% of the Class of 2019.
n Third grade student Burcham Stanley set a new bar for student giving: through the sale of baked goods he raised $600 and made his gift during the Tiger Give Back Challenge.
n Our last official gift was $3 from a student in kindergarten who raided his piggy bank.

Although our 4,100 alumni span the United States and 23 countries, we stay connected in many ways. Some alumni serve on the local Alumni Board or National Alumni Board of Visitors. Other alumni have returned to Edgehill to share their knowledge and expertise in teaching Evening Classes and speaking to High School students. Many have been class agents, planned Reunions, hosted class parties, and reached out to their classmates to support the Annual Fund. Alumni who live out of state have attended one of our dinners held across the country.
Because of their wonderful support, this year was a record-breaking year in many Alumni Board President Andrew Brandon ’97 and Vice President Sneha ways. Thanks to our dedicated and comChannabasappa Oakley ’94 welcome fellow alumni for Reunion 2019. mitted alumni and volunteers, we had 972 alumni participate in the Annual Fund, our largest group ever. While the Annual Fund makes operational excellence and an enhanced educational experience a reality each year, it also serves as an expression of our collective gratitude to those who came before us. We are grateful for your commitment to continuing the education USN is providing to future leaders, innovators, peacemakers, and problem-solvers. The alumni listed on the following pages have gone above and beyond in their commitment by serving as reunion volunteers and class agents. We are thankful for their time and service. nn Andrew Brandon ‘97 President, Alumni Board

We are proud to recognize the thousands of donors who made gifts to University School of Nashville between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019. Gifts to any area of USN, including capital projects, endowment, academic initiatives, the Annual Fund, Horizons at USN, planned gift intentions, matching gifts, and soft credit gifts (e.g. gifts via your foundation or business) are included in your total giving. There could be several reasons your name does not appear in what you believe to be the appropriate giving level or does not appear at all: 1. You made your gift either before July 1, 2018 or after June 30, 2019. 2. Your name may be listed in another giving level. 3. We made a mistake. While we make every effort to ensure every donor is listed correctly, we may have overlooked or misspelled your name. Please accept our apologies, and contact us at 615-329-4423 or nsewell@usn.org so we may correct our records.
