The University of Silesia is located in Katowice, a student-friendly city often chosen by those seeking a modern and comfortable place to live.

In 2024, Katowice ranked 3rd among Poland’s 16 regional capitals as one of the best places to live. The Business Insider Polska report considered factors like salaries, healthcare, air quality, and housing availability – in this respect Katowice took the first place.

The University also has its faculties in other cities across the Silesian Voivodeship, including Chorzów, Sosnowiec, and Cieszyn. More about the cities:

Katowice is the most connected city in Poland, with excellent transport links to other cities in the region. The Katowice Airport, Kraków Airport, and the Katowice central railway station provide easy access to many European destinations, including Ostrava, Budapest, and Vienna. The formal establishment of the Metropolis GZM has unified the region, as the initiative brings together 41 cities and towns into one unified area, similar to the world’s biggest metropolitan regions. Public transport, including buses, trams, and trains, makes it simple to travel across the metropolis and nearby areas. City bikes, available in every town, make getting around locally even easier.

Low cost of living

Compared to other European cities, Katowice offers exceptionally low rental prices and affordable public transport. We offer the largest student housing base in the region, with nearly 2,300 places in dormitories located across three cities: Katowice, Sosnowiec, and Cieszyn. Students can select from nine different student residence halls within three University residential areas, for an average rent of EUR 160 per month. 3

Culture and free time

Katowice is a city with a vibrant cultural scene, featuring numerous theatres, art galleries, museums, and festivals. Additionally, 42% of the city’s area is covered by forests, making Katowice one of the greenest cities in Poland. Its industrial past is now reflected in post-industrial sites that have been transformed into museums, galleries, and other recreational venues, such as the Culture Zone.

The University of Silesia stands as the region’s largest university, leading the way in recent academic initiatives and conducting groundbreaking research that directly impacts the quality of life in our community.

At the University of Silesia, you can develop your scientific interests not only through involvement in student research groups, but also by leading your own research and projects. You can also apply for funding for your own initiatives through the grants at the University of Silesia. This is your chance to make a real impact in the world of research!

The University of Silesia also supports young, aspiring scientists who are just beginning their journey.

Our university was the organiser of the final of the 35th edition of the international EUCYS competition, which took place as part of the European City of Science Katowice 2024. Around 150 brilliant young scientists, aged between 14 to 20 years old, representing nearly 40 countries, gathered in Katowice for 6 days to present around 90 scientific projects in the field of natural, mathematical, technical, economic, or social sciences.

The primary goal of EUCYS is to encourage young people to take an interest in science and to support their scientific passions. The event helps discover international talents, whose innovations can have a significant impact on the development of science.

EUCYS, the European Un ion Contest for Young Scientists, has been organised by the European Commission since 1989 and stands as the premier European contest for young scientists.

Are you conducting an interesting research project, individually or with friends? You haven’t finished your first semester of studies yet? EUCYS is the perfect contest for you!

It is an excellent opportunity for young students to broaden not only research but also cultural horizons. Participating in the contest allows them to visit different parts of Europe, as the final event of each edition takes place in a different country, which is an additional attraction and advantage that allows them to improve their language skills. Check the competition website for details and take your first steps into the world of science!
