SILESIAN SCIENCE FESTIVAL –THE MORE, THE MERRIER
The 7th Silesian Science Festival made history as the Opening Ceremony and the beginning of the celebrations of the European City of Science Katowice 2024. It all started with the Festival after all, and it would have been way harder for the City to win the title had it not been for that vibrant event. Although the collaboration between academic entities in Silesia has been effective for years, it was the Festival that brought us together for good. Us, meaning seven local public universities and their rectors forming the Academic Consortium Katowice – City of Science: Academy of Music – Prof. Władysław Szymański; Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Katowice –Prof. Grzegorz Hańderek; Academy of Physical Education – Prof. Grzegorz Juras; Silesian University of Technology – Prof. Arkadiusz Mężyk; Medical University of Silesia in Katowice – Prof. Tomasz Szczepański; University of Economics – Prof. Celina Olszak; University of Silesia – Prof. Ryszard Koziołek. The ‘academic seven’ was joined by three vital local government institutions and their leaders: Marcin Krupa, PhD, Mayor of the City of Katowice; Jakub Chełstowski, Marshall of the Silesian Voivodeship; Kazimierz Karolczak, Chair of the Metropolis GZM. Pythagoras considered 10 to be the supreme number. And although we share this belief, the more advocates an idea has, the easier it is to make it true. Therefore, two excellent universities from Częstochowa have been with us nearly from the beginning, represented by Prof. Anna Wypych-Gawrońska, Rector of Jan Dlugosz University; and Prof. Norbert Szczygioł, Rector of Częstochowa University of Technology. Having worked together for seven years, we have managed to create one of the biggest science communication events in Poland and Europe.

ABOUT FESTIVAL
Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE is one of the largest popular science events in Poland and Europe.
Our aim is to keep convincing people about the value of knowledge and scientific research, and their positive influence on the future of the world. We want to awaken and foster society’s interest in science by arousing cognitive curiosity in people of all ages – that is why we focus on their active participation in shows, experiments, lectures, and discussions.
ŚFN Programme offers hundreds of scientific attractions!
Not only scientists and students work for the success of ŚFN; it is a joint effort of exhibitors, lecturers, and science communicators from Poland and the world.
We find it important that the residents of the Silesian Voivodeship are aware of the scientific variety of their region and proud of having exceptional academic centres. We are a member of the European Science Engagement Association (EUSEA) network – an organisation associating European science festivals.

FESTIVAL RECOGNISED
WORLDWIDE
Together with other Polish science festivals, we decided to establish the Forum of Polish Science Festival Organisers in 2020.
ŚFN is an active member of EUSEA (European Science Engagement Association), within the framework of which we develop cooperation with foreign festivals.
Our representatives have visited scientific events in such cities as Göteborg, Edinburgh, Cheltenham, Belfast, and New York.
ŚFN has become a member of Ecsite –the European Network of Science Centres and Museums, bringing together over 320 organisations committed to inspiring people with science. Ecsite hosts an annual conference addressed to all people engaged in science. It is a perfect opportunity to share knowledge and establish valuable professional connections. The conference touches upon the issue of the relationship between science and society, among other things.
We have created a cooperation network that greatly improves the quality of the Festival.
Perfectly cooperating sponsors and institutional partners support us financially and substantively (we were supported by 150 partners between 2016–2023).
Together with six foreign universities, the University of Silesia forms a prestigious European University as part of the Transform4Europe Alliance. The Alliance contributes to the Festival’s organisation each year.
The Festival hosted 63 international scientists and science communicators between 2016–2023.

POWER OF KNOWLEDGE AND ATTRACTIONS
The programme of ŚFN KATOWICE includes the Opening Gala and the main part of the event taking place at the International Congress Centre (the 5th edition was an exception — see the chapter ‘Rawa Edition’).
The main part of the programme consists of several hundred different types of activities promoting science and art. An important part of them is the exhibition stands located in six science zones that reflect the scientific fields implemented and taught at universities in the Silesian Voivodeship. The zones include:
l natural sciences,
l humanities and social sciences,
l technology,
l medicine and health,
l exact sciences,
l the arts.
50,000 copies of the 7th ŚFN KATOWICE programme were distributed in Gazeta Wyborcza Daily
The activities offer hundreds of lectures and workshops, over a dozen exhibitions and concerts, and numerous meetings with festival guests — many of them took place in a more cosy atmosphere, as part of Science Stations, Tree of Tales or mellow out in the comforts of a science bookstore.
The Festival space is complemented by thematic zones, including:
l Special Zone,
l Kids Zone,
l Sports Zone,
l OFF Science Zone (with a Review of Garage Inventions).
The programme of the Festival is supervised by the Programme and Organisational Team, as well as our technical coordinators. Most of the points in the programme are created on the basis of applications sent by units, employees, doctoral students, and students from universities organising the Festival, as well as other scientific entities, cultural institutions, and partners.

PROMOTION AND COMMUNICATION
The Festival’s communication means to be constantly in touch with our audience and partners. Therefore, using social media, we share with our audience registrations for the most intriguing shows and lectures, engage people to participate in various events and invite them to meetings with our ambassadors and speakers.
We are broadly represented in the media we have been cooperating successfully with for several years, e.g. by engaging journalists in promoting ŚFN. The promotion of each edition of the Festival has two stages – the first concerns the recruitment of activities, and the second – the programme, guests, and partners. In the second stage, we run an extensive, nationwide advertising campaign on the Internet, in the media, and in public space. Our graphic designs are prepared by artists who are responsible for our artistic visual identity. The 3rd Silesian Science Festival KATOWICE, held in 2019, gained recognition and won the first prize in the competition for the best communication and marketing initiatives of European universities – EUPRIO Awards 2019.

EXCEPTIONAL EDITION – ŚFN BY THE RAWA RIVER
In 2021, we organised the Festival in a completely new format, arranging the open-air Rawa Scienceville by the river. The event was held on Sunday, 11 October.
The festival area stretched over a kilometre, from the Market Square in Katowice, through the following streets: Teatralna, Szkolna, Moniuszki, Pańki, and the campus of the University of Silesia in Katowice at Bankowa, including the car park behind the USil Faculty of Law and Administration.
The Rawa Edition included some new elements:
Accessibility Zone – we tried to show visitors how difficult life can be from the perspective of people with disabilities;
Support Zone ‘Four Walls of Homelessness’ (prepared in cooperation with the Municipal Social Welfare Centre in Katowice) – 66 people in the crisis of homelessness enjoyed a free hot meal, and could use sanitary facilities and psychological and legal help.
Lectures were held on as many as stages

GREEN SCIENCE ZONE
The Green Science Zone is one of the key areas for the European City of Science 2024. The un dertaking is to introduce spatial and environ mental transformations around the Rawa river boulevards.
The overruling idea is to restore the river and con struct a new space for urban, scientific and recrea tion purposes around it. The actions are to set up an innovative district where residents can discuss with scientists about developing scientific solutions to certain problems.

ŚFN ALL YEAR ROUND
We want the potential of ŚFN to work on its own and bring results every day all year round, and the Festival audience to remain connected with us between its subsequent editions.
ŚFN scientific challenge
We also encourage people who know ŚFN to take up scientific challenges prepared by our team – there are various tasks to perform, e.g. Goldberg machine design, the vision of Silesia in 2030, educational board game design; all of them have one thing in common –creativity.
