INDUSTRY INTERVIEW

BADRA LARBAOUI

Hamza: What Initially sparked your interest in fashion and how did you decide to pursue it as a career?

Badra Larbaoui: It has always been a passion of mine my whole life. When I was young I would be designing outfits and clothes through drawing and colouring. I surprisingly studied nothing to do with fashion and went down the route of literature and used to teach that subject for a while! Unfortunately, though I found that work incredibly restrictive and then my life went down a different path which some people may also not expect and I ended up working for Tiktok. It was still a 9-5 job and my passion for designing did not go anywhere as I found myself sketching the design and silhouettes at my desk and on my break which told me a lot about where my mind was at. I started of nowhere and decided this is what I wanted to do.

Hamza: Are there particular sources or channels you draw inspiration from when creating your designs and if so are they specific artists, cultures or historical periods?

Badra Larbaoui: I believe that everything you create is an extension of yourself and that you must try projecting the vision you associate yourself with. My main inspiration

however for my designs is my Algerian culture as I am drawn to African silhouettes and art, especially from the past. I have always appreciated and liked mystery when it comes to my creativity. This question links very well to the inspiration for the last collection I released for my brand Bophonysse. I travelled to Algeria myself and found rock carvings that date back to 15000BC that have very detailed inscriptions of dresses and garments and that is where I decided what my collection would be inspired by.

Hamza: Have you faced any major challenges or setbacks in your career as a fashion creative and what did you learn from those experiences?

Badra Larbaoui: I found that when you start your brand or label it is a lot harder than you expect it to be. Apart from being a designer your main focus when running a business essentially is becoming an entrepreneur which is the hardest transition in my opinion. It’s hard to find the balance between being a profitable brand and staying true to your vision so for me I found that I am focusing on being creative that executing my vision in its entirety instead of driving for profit as that would not be true to my brand or me.

”DO NOT WAIT FOR YOUR FUTURE TO START FOR YOU”

Hamza: Is there any advice or lessons you would like to share with any creative reading this that is just starting in their career?

Badra Larbaoui: My main piece of advice is always going to be do not wait for your future to start for you! Please do not wait to start the project or brand you have always wanted to create because it will always eat up at you. If there is an idea in your head, take it and run with it because you will have 100 more and it can become something so amazing and great. Always remember that I was sketching designs at my 9-5 job just waiting for my moment to happen but you have to take the reigns yourself because you have control at the end of the day.

Hamza: Can you provide any insight into any upcoming projects or what we can expect to see from you in the future?

Badra Larbaoui: I am someone that always likes to live in the present when it comes to my visions and creative output and has a big emphasis on slow fashion so I try to drag out my design process when it comes to these things, I do like to stay as up to date as I can with the fashion world but don’t care

too much for trends and such so I do not dabble or worry too much when it comes to thinking about the future of me or my brand. I am an optimistic person however and know that the future for Bophonysse will be very bright and exciting. I am very keen and excited for where this journey will take me and thank you so much for taking the time to feature me in this issue.

LONDON FASHION EVENTS

London’s status as a global powerhouse in creativity and culture is brilliantly showcased during its fashion weeks, where both established and emerging designers take centre stage. The city thrives as a fashion capital, owed in part to the remarkable financial and business backing provided by esteemed organisations such as the British Fashion Council. Commencing this June’s highly anticipated summer edition of London Fashion Week was the spectacular Graduate Collection show presented by the University of Westminster.

On June 9th, 14 graduating students from the University of Westminster, handpicked by The British Fashion Council, showcased their creations at LFW.

Westminster fashion graduates have been part of LFW since 2018 and were the first to show at SHOWstudio.

The FMP PULSE team had the privilege of attending and observing the live show, where they aimed to highlight the emerging fashion trends and talents showcased by the youngest designers making waves in the industry.

We would like to congratulate all Westminster graduates and whilst we wait eagerly for next year’s batch of students to release their collections head to the @ WestminsterFashion Instagram to get a head start on all the latest within the student and alumni communities.

PARIS TRIP

When it comes to the world of fashion, few cities hold as much significance as Paris. Renowned as the global capital of style, Paris has long been synonymous with elegance, innovation, and artistic expression.

Its profound impact on the fashion industry can be traced back centuries, making it an essential destination for designers, fashion enthusiasts, and trendsetters from around the globe.

As a result, it was very fitting that our Fashion Marketing and Promotion course trip would be in that very city. In January 2023 the level 6 students accommodated the generator hotel in Paris over the fashion week period attending exhibitions, galleries and classic restaurants.

We caught up with Level 6 FMP student, Sara Navabi, to get a closer insight into what this experience meant for her: “Paris Fashion Week with the Fashion Marketing and Promotion course

was an experience that left me utterly mesmerised, inspired by the creativity that was on full display.

“IT WAS A TESTAMENT TO THE AUDACITY OF FASHION”

One of the highlights was visiting the Musée Yves Saint Laurent and witnessing the breath-taking “Gold” exhibition. It was a dazzling display of the designer’s visionary artistry, showcasing the transformative power of fashion with elegance and allure.

Another unforgettable stop was the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, where we witnessed the whimsical world of Elsa Schiaparelli. Her designs pushed boundaries and shattered conventions, offering a surreal escape from the ordinary. It was a testament to

the audacity of fashion, inspiring me to embrace my own creative potential.

Beyond the exhibitions, Paris itself proved to be an enchanting playground for fashion enthusiasts. The streets were filled with boutiques that housed treasures waiting to be discovered and thrift stores that offered hidden gems at bargain prices.

Witnessing the passion and dedication of designers, curators, and fellow fashion lovers was a reminder of the vibrant community that exists within the industry, further nurturing my love for fashion.”

WHY FMP?

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

How is this course different from the other fashion related courses?

This course is very digitally focused as we want to make sure we align ourselves with the working practices of the industry. We have a very even split at Westminster with Lectures and Seminars. These can include but are not limited to practical learning opportunities, group projects, and workshops. Thoughts about London Tech Week 2023

London Tech Week 2023 was an inspiring experience, where tech enthusiasts from all corners of the globe congregated to explore the cutting-edge advancements shaping our digital landscape. As a lecturer at the University of Westminster, I had the privilege of attending various thought-provoking talks and witnessing groundbreaking innovations. In this article, I will share my personal insights and highlights, focusing on the evolution of the metaverse, the latest developments in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), as well as notable companies that captivated the audience.

The Metaverse: Endless Possibilities:

One of the most intriguing aspects of London Tech Week was the extensive exploration of the metaverse. The talks resonated with a collective vision of a digital

realm where individuals can transcend physical limitations and interact seamlessly with virtual worlds. One of the talks that captured my attention was “Building Safe & Accessible Virtual Worlds. How Do We Build an Inclusive Tech Ecosystem?” The panelists provided valuable insights into the importance of fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion within the metaverse and virtual reality experiences. During the conversation, it was intriguing to see that companies are including children in their design process. It is important to take into consideration the fact that in some years they will be the main users of virtual worlds.

Other discussions revolved around the potential impact of the metaverse on various sectors, from education and entertainment to business and social interactions. Apple and their new Vision Pro glasses influenced many conversations. Experts offered insights into the evolution of the metaverse, emphasizing the need for ethical considerations and the convergence of technologies like artificial intelligence and blockchain.

CHAT GPT

Unlocking the potential of cutting-edge technology in education has always been a subject of both excite ment and apprehension. With a forward-thinking approach, we recognise the immense opportunities Chat GPT brings to our course, empowering students and revolutionising the way we engage with knowledge. In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, the fusion of technology and fashion has become increasingly pivotal in the field of marketing and promotion. As the industry continues to embrace innovative solutions, Chat GPT emerges as a game-changer for fashion marketers and aspiring professionals. With its advanced capabilities in natural language processing and generation, Chat GPT presents a wealth of possibilities within the realm of fashion . BRAND PARTNERS

As fashion brands continue to seek innovative ways to reach their target audiences and stay relevant in the competitive market, the significance of collaborative endeavors cannot be overstated. This is why FMP is proud to talk about the upcoming brand partnerships that we have planned for the next academic year.

Recently I have started working with the University Bordj Bou Arreridj and Setif in Algeria in curriculum and teaching and learning development including staff development and developed new franchise courses with the well-known French creative university.

Imad let us know his insight on Fashion Marketing & Promotion and why he feels so passionately about this course:

Why FMP?

Our course is an innovative course with strong indus try links, it moves in tandem with a fast-paced fash ion world, providing you with up-to-the min ute knowledge, excellent transferable skills and a high employability rate. The course develops your fashion knowledge, acumen, and professional skills; enabling graduates to be perfectly positioned to embark on a career in the fashion industry; from a business start-up to joining or running an interna tional creative fashion agency.

This new Fashion Marketing and Promotion goes far beyond the realities of the fashion industry exploring and embedding the digital and metaverse in the fash ion promotion. Not only that, we also teach students how to use the AI tools ethically in order to support their creative project. In FMP we do believe that arti ficial intelligence is a valuable tool in fashion pro motion using AI as a foundation for their creative ideas, students can use AI in converting sketches, mood boards,

and descriptions into high-fidelity designs (for example, 3-D models of fashion styling, accessories or visual merchandising). Enrich concepts ideation by collaborating with AI agents that generate creative options (for example, new ideas, variations) from data (for example, past product lines, inspirational imagery and style). Customise products for individual consumers at scale (for example, eyeglasses based on facial topography). Using powerful tools like :Cala, Designovel , Zmo.ai , Vue.ai , Heuristic, Stylumia ,Dupe Killer, Bodify, Lykdat, Styleriser and intelistyle to cover areas from photoshoots to enhancing customer experience through analysing customers behaviours, predicting fashion trends as well as support digital marketing content. Additionally AI could promote sustainability in the fashion industry. Researchers are developing AI algorithms that can analyse the properties of different fabrics and identify those with the lowest environmental impact. This information can then be used to create new, eco-friendly materials that can replace traditional, more harmful textiles. For example, some companies are already using AI to develop innovative materials like vegan leather made from mushrooms or pineapple fibres, which have a significantly lower environmental footprint than traditional leather.

”THIS NEW FASHION MARKETING AND PROMOTION GOES FAR BEYOND THE REALITIES OF THE FASHION INDUSTRY ”

Assesment Style & Course Collaboration

In FMP been leading the authentic assessment proj ect by looking at alternative methods of assessment including embedding technology and creativity in assessment for instance we used metaverse in one of the level 6 modules ( new media ) as we asked students to create a virtual marketing campaign using 3D technology and virtual reality and the out come was very positive.

We also encourage cross modules assessments as as well as the collaboration between different courses, for instance in the marketing module we asked students to use the concepts of sustainability, Equality, diversity and social inclusion and launch a new capsule collection for a luxury brand in the UK dedicated to support the local community in Mali ( Africa), this assessment was cross mapped between two modules for fashion marketing course as well as being a collaborative assessment for fashion busi ness marketing, fashion film, fashion design and fashion photography so students worked in a collaborative project and they had the freedom for choosing the desired outcome; film, blog, pho toshoot, creative artefact, physical / digital coll ection . Our assessment briefs are very practical and

inclusive as we embed live projects, collaboration with designers, Agnes B, Bophonysse, Portobello Market and recently Firehouse.

Engagement with Community

We also focus on community engagement as we are actively involved in charity as I am a trustee of the NAC ( Nations Africa Center) where we have been actively supporting the local community working in different projects in education and arts for instance we supported developing and delivering apprenticeship courses for the borough of Brent.

The cultural aspect is a key focus for us , as we have been involved in many charity events since 2008 including the Mayor of London Trafalgar events (including Eid, St Patrick festivals) and the Nour festival of Arts where we showcased African culture, promoting equality, diversity and social inclusion.

Our latest project is working with African communities organising youth arts workshop, short movies competitions, photography competition, fashion shows, history seminars and debate classes to teach the younger generation to debate in different topics
